A literary form of anti-war protest
Book suggestion: “Articles of War” by Nick Arvin
There was a review at Amazon in which the reader admitted this book took him by surprise. Perfect description...as far as I’m concerned. Even the way I discovered it was unexpected. I was on the plane coming home from Houston and found a copy of the USA Today leisure section. Therein was a positive review for “Articles of War.” The WWII theme caught my eye so I got myself a copy.
It started a little slow...but then came the surprise. “Articles of War” is an extremely well-written anti-war book without dogma or theory. The story of a grunt called Heck offers a graphic, stark, and uncompromising glimpse at the inefficiency, the brutality, and the camaraderie of war...a glimpse that resonates with tales of WWI right up the current U.S. occupation of Iraq.

A short book you’ll read in one sitting...it’s fiction that intertwines with the real-life story of Pvt. Eddie Slovik. I can’t say I loved the ending but I feel that way about most novels.
If you want a one sentence pitch: It’s “Slaughterhouse Five” meets “Saving Private Ryan.”
