5 ways to value a cup of coffee (and t-shirts, too)
‘Shade-grown coffee requires less fertilizer, prevents soil erosion, requires fewer or zero pesticides, and promotes biodiversity.’
One really learns something new every day, even at my ‘ripe’ age of 59, Mickey! Thanks for another enlightening post - from a sunny Daylesford. Up to 80F today - another perfect autumn day!Keep up the good fight please.
Posted by Helga from Daylesford, Australia on 03/24 at 10:00 PMThat “union label” commercial brought me back.
And is that true about the teenage girl getting arrested for posting pics of herself? That’s ridiculous.
Posted by Charles from Jersey City on 03/24 at 10:59 PMI’m very lucky. Shanghai is mainly a huge showpiece for unsustainable development and the rule of real estate develops working of a suicidal profit model.
However, down the road from me is an independent cafe that uses one of the older pre war houses with a nice patio. It’s all mugs and local brands, it’s a community centre where people meet to talk about ideas (although a bit yuppie heavy) and they bag the coffee grounds for use in gardens and to ‘sweeten’ ashtrays.
They have books and veggie options on the menu.
It’s not perfect and it’s expensive - but in a city like this, it’s a model that must be supported.
I miss the Good Earth Cafe from when I lived in Calgary. Spicy lentil soup and sourdough bread.
Mmmmnnnn.
Posted by Andy from Shanghai on 03/25 at 04:01 AMHello everyone.
Yes, Charles, that poem is based on a true story.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/25 at 04:17 AMI’m not a coffee drinker but these things apply to black tea as well...which I like strong enough to strip paint.
Finally watched ‘Sharkwater’ last night, which was alternately wondrous and nauseating. There’s some great footage of Paul Watson, and his quote “we’re a primate out of control” is the central truth of life on this planet - all else is secondary. (I’m just trying to cheer everyone up.)
Going to the Arundhati Roy talk this Monday. She has a new article about being in the field with the Maoist resistance in India. http://tinyurl.com/y9nxjat
Posted by Zen Prole from Pac NW on 03/25 at 12:40 PMI’m glad you called out the walking billboard thing in the t-shirt article MZ. Sometimes I will pass the time waiting to board trains or planes by counting the number of Nike swooshes I see people wearing. Doesn’t matter what country I’m in, it’s always a ridiculously high number.
Posted by Keir from here and there on 03/25 at 01:29 PMThanks, Keir.
Zen: Would it be completely inappropriate for me to ask you to give Arundhati a big hug...from me? I can’t help it. She makes me swoon.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/25 at 01:40 PMHi again, Charles, Mickey, Zen Prole and Keir.
Zen Prole, seeing you commented on Jonathan Safran Foer’s ‘Eating Animals’ on an earlier post, you might be interested in this interview which was broadcast here last night:
http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2010/s2856551.htmOh, and Arundhati makes me swoon, too, Mickey#7 (and Zen Prole #5). I hope she’ll be in Melbourne one day - that’s where we are headed again later today.
Have a good rest of the week and a good weekend, my expendables!
Posted by Helga from Daylesford, Australia on 03/25 at 03:43 PMWhat does swoon mean?

Love your site but that amount of spam a bit irritates me, speaking frankly!
