A book assignment and caption contest to help you forget I'm not around
This is fun:
“The next it appeared to be only what, in all likelihood, it was: a kind of retraction.
Zimbalist struggled for the next hour to understand that move, and for the strength to resist confiding to a ten-year-old whose universe was bounded by the study house, the shul, and the door to his mother’s kitchen, the sorrow and dark rapture of Zimbalist’s love for the dying widow, how some secret thirst of his own was quenched every time he dribbled cool water through her peeling lips.”
From The Yiddish Policeman’s Union, by Michael Chabon.

“RENT MY MOVIE! oh yeah, and we should really do something about the environment.”
Posted by JOS from Oak Park on 06/24 at 08:51 AMSince I am at work, the only book near me is a copy of, Technician/General Class License Manual for The Radio Amateur, The ARRL 1985-1986.
This book is about HAM radio and information needed to obtain a HAM License...for transmitting, not receiving.
The pages are not in traditional numerical order. Now isn’t this as fascinating as the study of particles in the universe, which we as humans, as expendables are only one of...but each of us are comprised of many smaller particles, vibrating, just like electronic signals of radio transmissons. So where do human emotions come into this...well, how the hell sould I know?
Posted by joe of maine from on 06/24 at 09:29 AMthis book has been sitting on my printer for weeks now.
Peace is Every Step by Thich Nhat Hanh.
Theres a poem on pg123.
“I still arrive, in order to laugh and to cry,
in order to fear and to hope.
The rhythm of my heart is the birth and
death of all that are alive.”Good morning JOS and Joe.
Posted by frances from bc on 06/24 at 10:00 AMHello Frances...Thich Nhat Hanh is great! I was reading some brief stories by him just yesterday, while at work. I hope you are doing well.

Posted by Buddhamonkeydevil from USA on 06/24 at 10:46 AMThank you Joe, yes I am doing well. Mostly irrational fears and emotional sludge...really makes me feel inept and incompetant. Other than that just waiting for the sun to reappear, its been about a week of overcast and drizzle. When the sky does manage to clear, jet trails quickly smear it up with a glaring white filmy haze...I am really starting to hate human technological innovation.
Posted by Frances from bc on 06/24 at 11:03 AMFrances...7...I don’t know if it helps you to know, I and many people I know are very disconerted, confused, hurt, pissed off, etc. Every strange feeling for me personally, except for being grounded with calm.
I was just reading, ‘some teachings’ I am familiar with and simply reading about it is not really helpful, but for me is calming and keeps me in the moment and quiets mind. I do not intend to pontificate by saying you have the insight, and desire humane truth to understand expressing what many are clueless to.
Posted by joe of maine from on 06/24 at 11:11 AMyes Joe, I read to calm myself as well...I agree that without ‘practice’ it does little in the long run. we have a saying in our home,"fake it till you make it”.
Our morning ritual is a hug first thing in the day. Start things off with a warm sharing. Sometimes it feels like we are only going through the motions...other times its a genuine expression of caring here and nowness. Without judgement, just being aware of the feelings of closeness and seperation.Posted by frances from bc on 06/24 at 12:20 PMFrances...9...you said,"fake it till you make it”
Yeah...it takes effort to become...It seems like your household is far more sane than most I have been aware of!

from The Penguin Dictionary of American English Usage and Style. (If my fellow Expendables could have seen the look on my face when I found this quote! It doesn’t name the source, but is the entry for use of ‘except’ and ‘excepting.’)Joe, I agree with your view; almost everyone I know had/is having/will soon have darkness descend. This is what fascism looks like. I reflect on the various peoples, foreign and domestic, for whom this sort of misery has gone on for generations. Here’s to having nothing left to lose.
A teaspoon of good news: my mom’s partner is making a rapid recovery from a triple bypass. He’s a good guy - I’m glad that they’re together.
I’m stumped for a caption. Mostly the photo makes me want to puke. It’s in the same class (insert rim shot) as that Dubya/Hillary shot from a while back.
Posted by Zen Prole from Urth on 06/24 at 02:58 PMGood afternnoon Mickey, JOS, frances, Zen, Buddahmonkey, and joe…
What a coincidence. I just happen to have the HAM manual at my side, too. As joe says, the pages are not numbered. I will pick a sentence at random from Chapter 6. “...Radiation resistance should not be confused with the feed-point impedance...”. A long time ago, I was a HAM- WA2YYU.Posted by RMJ from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts on 06/24 at 03:41 PMRMJ...12...yeah RMJ...that is weird...do you still receive? I’m only involved with Shortwave and not on a regular basis these days. Mostly to listen to music from other countries when reception is good.
Posted by joe of maine from on 06/24 at 03:57 PMJoe...I was licensed in the 60s and have had so many life changes since then that I had to give it all up. Sometimes I miss it. I have friends who communicate with HAMS all around the world. That would be fun but I never was very good with code. My brain just does not work that way.
What kind of work do you do now that is connected to HAM radio?Posted by RMJ from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts on 06/24 at 04:52 PMHi everybody...do you sometimes pick up the morning paper and know that you could write a better headline than the Editor did? Yesterday, I would have used the headline, “Labor Pains in Vermont”. The lead story was about our hospital which has been in operation since 1918. We have been having a major crisis in health care here. The Delivery Room is now closed on week-ends...not enough Pediatricians, etc. Yes, things are SiCKO in Vermont these days. We need an emergency air shuttle service to Havana.
Posted by RMJ from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts on 06/24 at 05:00 PMRMJ...14...I don’t do anything with HAM...the books have been on my desk at work, given to me by someone who thought I would find them interesting because he knew I had shortwave receivers...well I’m not interested in HAM radios and my mind does not work in a way that I could learn the information anyway.
I bought a shortwave receiver because I wanted a different flavor of propagand, but really to listen to music from other countries. I think a radio is a more interesting way of doing this in place of the computer, which I spend too damn much time in front of anyway....so it’s fun listening to the English broadcast of Radio Madrid poking fun at our backwards medical profession..e.g., listening to some very intense music from Turkey or elsewhere...sometimes I listen to another language broadcast, since I don’t know what anyone is talking about in English, I might as well NOT know what they are saying in another language...at least the sound is unfamiliar...(-:...also I can’t tell it’s obviously bullshit…
Posted by joe of maine from on 06/24 at 05:06 PMThis really is fun, Mickey! And before I forget: I hope you and Michelle have the most pleasant holidays.
Here are sentences 5 and 6 from p. 123 of the book I am reading at the moment:
‘It’s what’s coming. The only thing language does now is separate us from the animals.’The book: ‘Honored Guest’, a collection of short stories by Joy Williams published in 2004 - the quote is from the story ‘Claro’. The (American) edition of this book was sent to me by an American friend after I had told him how much I like Joy Williams. Expect the unexpected when you read her stories. Highly recommended.
And ‘hi’ from a cool but dry Daylesford to JOS, Frances, Joe of Maine (#8: ‘I don’t know if it helps you to know, I and many people I know are very disconerted, confused, hurt, pissed off, etc. Every strange feeling for me personally, except for being grounded with calm.’ I am one of those ‘many people’, Joe and Frances), buddhamonkeydevil, Zen Prole and Rosemarie.

It seems the Federal government has been underfunding hospitals to the tune of 1.1 bn dollars a year - but they never have trouble finding billions of dollars for ‘defense’.
Here are two (non-fiction) pieces by Joy Williams published in ‘Granta’, one about the case against children and one about her dog ‘Hawk’:

It reminded me of Patton Oswalt, one of the best comedians in the US. When Gene returned from the funeral he told me that there had been an open casket and that the autographed picture was beside Jimmy’s head” from = the Soul of a Butterfly - Reflections on Life’s Journey = by Muhammed Ali with Hana Yasmeen Ali =p 123= Jimmy was a 12 year old boy who once visited Ali’s training camp while the champ was training to fight George “the griile guy” Foreman. Jimmy had leukemia. Jimmy’s dad called Gene while the boy was in his final days battling the disease. Ali and Gene (a trainer/assistant) jumped in the car and hurried to Philly to find Jimmy white as a sheet but smiling. “I knew you’d come.” said Jimmy. The champ said, “I’m going to beat George Foreman and you are going to beat cancer.” The story is about determination. Ali won! Jimmy passed on. =HEROES= I met Ali in April of 69’. He was out of boxing because of his religious principle to resist/defy the draft. He visited our University in the Quad Cities - IL/IA..for a speaking engagement in our Old LeClaire sweatbox gym. A small group of Chi-town Southsiders met with him one-on-one following the talk. Ali was living in Chicago at that time. He asked us about our neighborhoods back home and identified locales we mutually frequented. Thirty-five years later, I wrote a small tribute ABOUT THAT MEETING in the guest comment section on the Ali Foundation website. The Development Director called me for greater detail on that evening. Turns out, the Center’s Curator/Display Director didn’t have much info for that period of Ali’s Draft Resistance. She put me in touch with the Center’s Director, Michael J Fox, whom I also knew something about. Michael’s dad was a player-coach during the WWII era on a team that went 8-1, featuring “Crazy Legs” Hirsch. The head coach was one of Notre Dame’s infamous “Four Horseman”. For the last two days there has been talk of setting up army tents, added the old man with the black eye-patch.
The closest book at hand is Jose Saramago’s Blindness, which I also happen to be reading at the moment. Excellent author, excellent work.
Posted by Keir from the hague on 06/25 at 04:15 AMLet us begin our analysis by noting that men are not solitary but function within hierarchical structures. In birds, amphibians and mammals we find dominance structures (Tinbergen. 1953; Marler, 1967) and in human beings, structures of authority mediated by symbols rather than direct contests of physical strength.
From ‘Obedience to Authority’ by Stanley Milgram - which is a fucking crazy book about lots of experiments they did on people to see how far they would continue to do what they were told even if they felt it was very wrong.
Posted by michael from scotland on 06/25 at 04:18 AMMichael of Scotland....from ‘Obedience to Authority’...It’s always curious to see man comparing himself to other species and life forms, frequently to legitimize man’s way of living and relating to one another
How so many love hierarchies...how so many people feel they understand the behavior of other species as viewed and understood with the limited understanding of ego driven humans. How we project our own limitations onto the universe. PBS has shown the Cheetah always catching the Thompson Gazelle, they have shown this nature documentary dozens of times...so it certainly must be okay for man to be a predator, it would be easily concluded. The narrator of this series always sounds knowledgable and authoritative.
There are other explanations for other species behavior that state they are NOT hierarchies as played out by human societies who possess insane weapons systems.
The arrogance of humans who claim to understand, yet neglect to simply stop, observe, sense, feel and step out of the limited understanding of the conditioned human brain.

Posted by Thomas McCullock from Colorado Springs on 06/25 at 10:42 AMFINALLY, proof of the existence of GOD !!!
The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington
chemistry mid term. The answer by one student was so “profound” that
the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of
course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well :Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic
(absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law
(gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we
need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate
at which they are leaving.I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it
will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering
Hell, let’s look at the different religions that exist in the world
today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of
their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of
these religions and since people do not belong to more than one
religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of
souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of
change of the volume in Hell because Boyle’s Law states that in order
for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume
of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two
possibilities:1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls
enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase
until all Hell breaks loose.2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls
in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes
over.
So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa
during my Freshman year that, “It will be a cold day in Hell before I
sleep with you,” and take into account the fact that I slept with her
last night, then number two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell
is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it
follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore,
extinct......leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a
divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting“Oh my God.”

Posted by frances from bc on 06/28 at 09:30 AMHi frances...I received that e-mail a couple of days ago. My reaction was the same as yours. The thing that makes me so sad is that there IS a way to bring about change, and it’s legal and non-violent. If everyone just did nothing - no work, no shopping, no traveling. The only problem there is that for most, no work means no eating. BUT, I think that it would have an effect even if the total boycott of everything lasted only for a brief period of time..not long enough for babies to starve. The other problem is that if someone did not show up for work, he/she would be fired and replaced by someone without a conscience. I guess that there are just not enough people in this country who give a damn. Those who want Global Peace and Justice are just too small in numbers to achieve anything in a legal and non-violent way. That’s what Malcolm X, Ward Churchill, and so many others have been saying for a very long time.
