  7. Mickey, I hope that you are out soaking up the rays right now. Have a wonderful birthday and make some memories that will make you smile many years from now.

    Thinking about birthdays - tomorrow is the 99th birthday of my father. He was a first generation American. His parents came from Poland and his Mother never learned to speak English. His father worked in the anthracite mines at a time when the coal companies would just toss the dead bodies out of the wagon in front of the house after mining accidents. My father had to quit school in the second grade to go to work on a farm. During the Depression, he shoveled coal for 50 cents a ton. Over the years he became self educated. He has several inventions to his name. Whenever the car companies in Detroit were faced with an engineering problem that they could not solve, they called on my Dad. He was one of the most intelligent people I have ever known. Both he and Mickey are perfect examples of the value of self-education.  My Dad died of Parkinsons Disease 25 years ago but I still miss him.

Given the fires of xenophobia and anti-immigrant fears being fanned daily by the likes of Lou Dobbs, it helps to remember that not only was Detroit built to a substantial extent by immigrants (two of the four designers of Model T were Hungarian born), but what is little known outside Detroit is that even today a large percentage of engineering staff in such a “mature” industry is made up of immigrants (by contrast reliance of newer industries, e.g. telecom, computers, etc. on foreign talent is much more widely acknowledged).
