A Vegan Vaudeville Violinist?
I was just watching Democracy Now. The maker of an upcoming TV special on King’s Vietnam speech, Tavis Smiley was talking about how the speech turned so many against him including his own followers.
The Smiley said when you go into the public eye and talk you will meet the problem of truth vs power and that if you continue to tell the truth it will cost you.
Then King just continued with the truth no matter what happened, right up to being killed.
The way I see it is that if you become aware, you can’t turn that off.
Anyway, it’s so true. The simple act of saying what you see out loud and following it to it’s logical conclusion is very dangerous ... to power.
Posted by Andy from Shanghai on 03/30 at 05:45 AMHello...from rainy Astoria. Dead on, Andy. Once your mind and heart and eyes are open, it’s nearly impossible to fully close down.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/30 at 12:46 PMHi Andy, Mickey, There’s been lots of talk in the UK about the economy since the last Budget. There’s one topic absent from the discussion...the military budget. They talk about cutting money for the NHS etc (the university my sister works for is cutting 60% of its staff)...but word of the new nuclear submarines...nope. Which is more useful...education, health...or nuclear submarines? Well I’m not at university anymore, and right now I don’t need a doctor!
Posted by Rick (the Cartoonist) from England on 03/30 at 01:29 PMQuote of the day: “Then I went mad and was locked up. This is what it sounds like inside my head.” I like EA already. Gotta listen to her stuff…
The Arundhati Roy talk last night was amazing. My brain is still buzzing. Her enormous presence is matched by exceptional grace and humor, very much the same gift as Howard Zinn.
The funniest part was about being interviewed by Charlie Rose.
CR: Should India have nuclear weapons?
AR: No, I don’t think India should...and neither should the US...or Israel.
CR: (testily) That wasn’t the question I asked you.
She smiled and said “The program never aired.”
<big laughs and applause>When she read her mother’s comment from Walking With The Comrades ("what this country needs is revolution"), in unison there was a throaty rumble from the audience. Maybe a biologist could sort it out further, but it sounded genuine to me.
