Music to compost by: Top 20 Eco-Songs
Nice article.
Talking of socially and environmentally conscious music, my band <a href"www.douban.com/artist/expendable">Expendable</a> have a new song out soon called “Paris ‘68”. Will keep you posted. Making a great flyer right now of me and the singer in a Paris street with spray cans and Molotov cocktails and dead businessmen.
The lyrics are modelled on the situationalist graffiti too, the chorus is based around the line “Beneath the concrete is the beach.”

Posted by michael from not scotland on 10/28 at 06:10 AMHello Michael and Andy. The eco-song list was fun to compile.
Andy: I like this pic:

Wow, thanks. I’m an inveterate fan of lists.
Speaking of songs about the environment, have you heard “Respétala” by Azul Tierra? Good stuff

Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 10/28 at 09:16 AMThanks Mickey and Michael.
Mickey, if you send me a good picture, I’ll add you to the heroes gallery. I liked the one of you punching santa.
Posted by Andy from shanghai on 10/28 at 11:02 AMSure, you can grab one from here, Andy:

That bar is a basement dive with a stage area. It was the site of many cool rock and punk shows for a year or two.
That night, for the first time ever, one of the ex-pat listings/review magazines had caught wind of a show there and sent down a kind of ‘event photographer’. It was very odd, a CBGB’s type place and this flash looking guy with his big camera, asking everyone to pose for him.
So, the story behind my wife’s smile.
The photographer rocks up to us and says, no joke, “hey, great couple, smile for me.”
So I said, “Hey, pretentious asshole, go somewhere else.”
Hey took it well and got ready for shot saying, “come on guys” ... so I gave him the finger and held it there ... and Evans thought it was funny so she was laughing for the shot.
Epilogue: The next week we saw it on the magazine’s website, they put it in anyway, so fair play to them for having a sense of humor about it. And so I nabbed the photo and it’s one of my favourites of me and the wife.
Posted by Andy from shanghai on 10/28 at 11:12 AMIndeed, your wife’s beautiful smile speaks volumes.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 10/28 at 11:19 AMI voted for your list, MZ. That must mean we have some democracy around here.
I’d forgotten about “(Nothing But) Flowers”, but it’s one of the greats. So is “Fall On Me”; the short intro to that is sweet. Here’s a thrashy little apocalypse from 1990 http://tinyurl.com/d8nvyz
Great photo, Andy, and the story behind it is just as good.
Posted by Zen Prole from Pac NW on 10/28 at 12:26 PMGreat list MZ.
The footage of the polar bear swimming brought a tear. So beautiful, but so quixotic. Last time I saw a polar bear was when you, JOS and I walked through the Central Park Zoo, before meeting up with Charles and James.
Posted by Keir from here and there on 10/28 at 12:28 PMspeaking of nietzsche quotes...here’s a paraphrase of one I wrote down as soon as I read it in one of his books (I don’t remember which one) many, many years ago:
live life like a child at play
I wish I could follow that one more often.
Posted by JOS from Chicago on 10/28 at 12:37 PMGreat stuff today, Mickey. Watching the polar bear swim around was hypnotic.
Lately I’ve been watching a lot Bill Nye, The Science Guy on youtube. He’s got some great parody videos on there with an eco-theme. I’ve been posting them on my Facebook page. Here’s one on recycling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaRlFwfIts4&feature=player_embedded
Loved the poem, by the way. I was just reading this article today on a new video in which you’re supposed to gun down green activists. http://www.mnn.com/technology/computers/blogs/new-game-guns-down-environmentalists
It also mentioned in the article that “a recent marketing study showed if the word ‘green’ is in a web-link users are 10x less likely to click on it over a non-green link.”
People really don’t give a flying fuck.
Posted by Charles from Jersey City on 10/28 at 01:13 PMThanks, all. I was also quite taken with the polar bear video. What’s a worse fate? Locked up in Central Park Zoo being stared at by obese tourists or swimming for days in search of polar ice until you drown? Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to human culture, circa 2009.
