  1. Paul Fussell’s answer to this conundrum is “The X Way Out” as outlined in his very enjoyable book, ‘Class - A Guide Through the American Status System’: (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0671792253/qid=1120917456/sr=11-1/ref=sr%5F11%5F1/104-6168401-7829501)

  2. Mickey, you’ve got a wonderful mind…

I sure hope Captain Watson is wrong, though.  I hope we’ve got lots and lots of “live together in a world of respect and compassion for one another...” genes, within ourselves, just waiting to explode from this arbitrary and generally savage world in which we’re temporarily confined… And I hope we’ll soon have an opportunity to experience this explosion of respect and reason and good will.  If not, the whole world will be slowly but inexorably converted into a series of gulags from which we may not emerge for a long, long time…

    Let’s see:  gulag… happiness; gulag...happiness; gulag...happiness…

Yup, happiness seems better to me.

    Nice work, Mr. Z.

  3. Thanks, SK. I’ve read other books by Fussell and will definitely give this one a shot.

Joe: I don’t view these sentiments as being universally true..but it’s important to factor in the power of conditioning. Decades of corporate propaganda with no end in sight.
