What does a 4-year-old know about global warming?
That article fits with my experience so well. Exchanges always go something like this.
1) simple supposition like “we need to dismantle nukes”.
2) conditioned response like “It’s just not that simple.” or something using the words macro or big picture.
3) As them to explain why or to go into detail on their own ideas.
4) discovery that other person has no fully formed view on the subject or basically agrees with you - they were simply repeating a learned response.
Posted by Andy from Shanghai on 02/28 at 09:33 PMAgreed, Andy. I sometimes hear “it’s not that simple” after someone hears me give a talk.

Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/01 at 06:00 AM‘Occupation’ really IS a dirty word - unfortunately not with too many journalists.
Hi, Andy and Mickey. Mr and Mrs Helga will be off to Melbourne to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary - back on Friday, so take care until then!
All best,
HelgaPosted by Helga Fremlin from Daylesford, Australia on 03/01 at 04:02 PMHappy Anniversary, Helga.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/01 at 04:11 PMThank you, Mickey!
And like me, you might find it hard to actually take this reporting seriously - and does the word ‘occupation’ even come up once? No, it doesn’t. SCREAM!
http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2010/s2833707.htmBye till Saturday/Friday!
Posted by Helga from Daylesford, Australia on 03/01 at 05:55 PMThanks, Helga. If we were to believe the American media, we might think the US doesn’t even have troops in Iraq anymore.
Btw, I’ll put up a new post tomorrow. I guess I’m just hoping comments will pick up here tonight.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/01 at 08:56 PMTo call it an occupation would be to admit it was an invasion.
Posted by Andy from Shanghai on 03/01 at 10:49 PMAnd it’s only an “invasion” when the other guys do it.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/02 at 05:24 AMSeen the movie “The Hurt Locker” yet? The Guardian UK critic Xan Brooks was quite sane about it in the comments of a review he did, surprised me.
The movie was praised for been ‘apolitical’ and focusing on human drama. Now Bigelow is coming out to say it’s anti-war.
It’s all ridiculous though. What Brooks said in the comments in reply to a commenter was that the movie itself is political in that it’s like embedded journalism. It only tells the story from the side of the American soldier and all Iraqi characters are brief and portrayed as shifty and bad.
The only character who tries to befriend the ‘other side’ gets blown up for his troubles.
Posted by Andy from Shanghai on 03/02 at 05:36 AMHaven’t seen it, Andy. For what I’ve read about it, I’m not interested. Now, your review seals the deal.
Posted by Mickey Z. from Astoria on 03/02 at 05:44 AMFYI: A new post is up. Hope to see you all there.
