America: a coast-to-coast mall
The trade group is spinning, Mickey. Even the corporate media reports less sales than expected. “Confidence building” PR won’t change their numbers.

The second link goes the Times UK. It’s a poorly formatted page.Corporate crony capitalists are the least qualified to influence economic policy. They always shoot themselves in the foot, then cry for a bail out and blame conditions for their foreseeable screw ups.
Posted by harry on from 11/29 at 01:46 PMYeah, who needs accuracy with all that taxpayer $$$ just sitting there waiting to bail you out?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from 11/29 at 01:54 PMTheir true colors show when they start to childishly gloat about their cleverness. Those Enron emails are a perfect example. I think they get a kick out of watching well-meaning liberals attempt to patch up the things they destroy.
Posted by harry on from 11/29 at 02:16 PMIt always amazes me during the pre-holiday build up how the news media report on the sales, as an adjunct to corporate advertising (read: Wal-Mart, Kmart, Sears, McFashion stores). Even here in Burlington, after Thanksgiving, the local newspaper had front page stories about people lining up early to enter stores for the sales. IMO this gives the stores some free advertising.
For Christmas and Hannukah (yeah, I’m not Jewish, but I celebrate both) - either I buy small items from local artisans to give to my younger family members (I’ve done this when I lived in the UK, Texas and Vermont) or I send a substantial donation to Episcopal Relief and Development to fund HIV or homeless programs in honour of adult family and friends.
