Crumbs from Our Table
This piece was incredible. Thank you. I think you made important connections between the large struggle to change our current system and those suffering right now. Too many involved in resistance groups in the First World can see the big picture, but are not “capable of feeling any injustice committed against anyone anywhere in the world,” to quote a great man.
Your writing was powerful, and as always, incredibly accessible. I could refer more than a few leftist/radical commentators your way for writing lessons.
One tiny caution: I think your should resist using the quantity of petroleum, or other resources valued in the Western world available in, on or under the land of the dispossessed as a reason they should not suffer in poverty. Many indigenous groups have zero desire to drill beneath their land, no matter how much riches that could bring to them. Bolivia’s natural gas reserves should be pointed to as a REASON the Bolivians are poor, not as a reason they should not be poor.
A friend of mine did her 4th year research paper on Colombia. She demonstrated that the areas where Plan Colombia attention was going perfectly coincided with areas of indigenous dispossession, which perfectly coincided with areas of known oil and gas reserves. Maybe your point was not that the Bolivians should not be poor because they have so much gas, but that is what comes across in the article.
Other than that… thanks.

The only thing scarier than the reality of this situation is the knowledge that it is being done on purpose.
PhilipPosted by Philip O'Connell on from Eugene, OR 12/21 at 07:03 PMI don’t doubt that many view the world in such stark terms...but that does not mean it can be reversed. The state of the world is the result of human decisions...not “god’s will.” Other decisions could have been made and other results could have emerged. Therefore, it follows that the decisions we influence now can impact billions.
