Tsunamis, tribes, and tossing your cookies
Funny, I just finished reading that before I came here. Did you catch the line at the end where one of the local people living in a nearby “westernized” village comments that “they belong in the jungle, humans belong in the city”
Can you post the link to the original article please? I went back to the one I saw it at,
http://www.startribune.com/stories/484/5171899.html
And I now have to “register for free” to get access to it. I guess the first read was just a taste, and now that they hopefully got you hooked.... ;)

Posted by Mickey Z. on from 01/07 at 02:17 PMCNN had an equally offensive piece earlier this week about an initiation ceremony gone wrong in South Africa-with all the usual generalisations.
http://www.cnn.com/2005/world/africa//01/03/circumcision.nurse.reut/index.html-what IS it about age-grade initiations and ritual circumcision that gets western journalists so worked up-as though a grinning shaman is waiting around their office cubicle dull clamshells in hand...?! The article was filled with incorrect information as well(ex. refering to linguistic groups as “clans” and so forth). I understand that these articles are written by journalists not anthropologists still, one would think an editor might be able to catch this sort of -I don’t know what to call it-ignorance, ethnocentricm, insensitivity-I mean, it probably isn’t deliberate, just careless (maybe that’s too generous).
Posted by Goody on from Exiled to NE 01/07 at 04:42 PMThe link didn’tt work, Goody...but I get the idea. Such utter disrespect for anything that doesn’t conform to Western lifestyles.
