  1. Thanks, MickeyZ, for showing the hypocrisy of the Whole Foods “Animal Compassion Foundation”, which is opposed by the Friends of Animals organization in your link above.  This Whole Foods corporate incentive is nothing more than a feel-good, profit-seeking campaign, which will appeal to those who value the fleeting taste of flesh above the lives of non-human animals, and the health of this planet.

Whole Foods ‘compassionate standards’--to be judged by none other than livestock sellers--are really designed to promote the sale of meat with false claims of kindness to animals.  It’s assuring for people who want to eat meat, and who will thus be willingly pursuaded, to think farmed animals are treated kindly. But the so-called “Animal Compassion Foundation” deliberately ignores the personal interest which non-human animals have in staying alive, as well as the damage caused by the meat industry to an environment where both human and non-human animals must live.

So thanks, MickeyZ, and the Friends of Animals.  No thanks, Whole Foods.

  2. My feeling is that if Whole Foods wanted to make a somewhat meaningful contribution in the way of “animal compassion” they would take down their meat and seafood departments by two thirds of their current obscenely enormous size (and smell) and stop selling live lobsters and crabs.

Apparently Veg News readers would rather shop there than at Wild Oats, which stocks much smaller amounts of animal flesh while selling live lobsters only in their Portland Maine store.  I don’t get why Whole Foods can win a popularity contest with vegans. Am I too idealistic or too cynical?

I came to feel that I was the only vegan in the world who thinks the Whole Foods Animal Compassion Foundation is a load.  I looked up Mickey Z wondering what he thought, and, well, hooray.  I came to the right place.  A little faith has been restored....Yay Mickey Z, FOA and Ellie M!

  3. Welcome to the site, Danielle. I just love the way you found it.

As for Whole Foods, at the end of the day, I shop almost exclusively at a Mom & Pop style health food store about four blocks from my apartment. Local organic produce, everyone knows your name, and I help them with PR and get a permanent 10% discount in return.

So, now that you’ve found the site, I hope you’ll stop by and again...and spread the word.

    Yours in veganism,

    MZ
