"Motorcycle Diaries"

  1. Loved the movie, too, Mickey.  It was a great movie.  It showed how Che became a conscious person.  Really great stuff.  It was funny, cuz at the end of the movie they had the caption saying that Che went on to fight in the revolutionary war for Cuba.  When that caption came on a friend and I heard a woman gasp and say “oh that’s Che”.  She hadn’t a clue the whole time.  Priceless.

  2. I’ll bet that was relatively common, Ruben. Many people know the name “Che” and associate him with Castro, Cuba, and communism (the three Cs?)...but how many people know anything more about him?

  3. here’s something.  Che’s grandparents on his mother’s side came from Ireland.  Their name was Lynch. They left Ireland for Argentina.

Some debate about where in Ireland they came from.  Most people believe it’s county Galway, which is just north of where one of Muhammad Ali’s great grandfathers came from.  A friend of mine believes Che’s family came from Cork, and he is trying to do further research on it.

Che’s daughter was here a few years ago, on the invite of the Cuba support group in Ireland.  During her talk in Dublin, she was asked about the Irish connnection. She laughed, and told the story of how she has five children, four of them look a lot like Che, and the fifth has pale skin and red hair.

  4. O’Che?

Very cool, Mike. Thanks for that tidbit. Michele and I are running out now to meet my friend Rich and his wife Lisa (to see an Iranian film...more on that later). He will love that anecdote.

Also, since my maternal grandfather was born in Limerick, it strikes a chord with me, too.

  5. Yeah, loved the movie. Thought it to be softly stated and to have avoided cashing in on the audiences knowledge of the rest of Che’s journey. An accurate representation of the actual diaries or what we have of them as they have been edited by family. It was through his travels that Guevara conscience grew andtook form. His exposure to the injustices visited upon the native populations of South America, led to the fire of belief which grew in him. I also feel this fire. The swim across to the island was desperately poignant. Thoroughly enjoyed the feature which offers a vision of the young revolutionary conscience being formed to another generation now coming through. Viva la revolution, Hasta la victoria siempre mis companeros. dmcg

  7. I’ve got the same disease...even if I’m only half-Irish.

What I loved about the movie (among many things) is the way exposure to other peoples and cultures and “classes” helped spark the fire both Che and his travel partner had inside.

    Thanks for the posts, Declan.
