This might be UNC's year...but what's a Tar Heel?

  1. The rules for power politics basketball seem familiar. The need to produce something marginally palatable for propaganda purposes leads to real banality. It’s no wonder so many people find the antics of power freaks boring. They rig the game, lie and then gloat like cretins.

  2. While i don’t deny there’s a boatload of justified criticism for the sports industry, I also think the college game has declined a bit since so many players either skip college or only stay a year.

  3. The creeping schemes to make money off the college games have done a lot of harm. The athletes see less and less sense in remaining amateurs. Their coaches are pulling in 3/4 of a million bucks and the athletes are forced to be walking billboards for Nike. Plus, when you’re hungry for success and talented, the education has less value than a fat contract that will let you take care of things. I can’t say I blame them a bit.

  4. Early departures and players going directly to the NBA have hurt college games, but I have long been of the belief that I don’t care how much better the pro players are, their games are usually boring to watch but the crowds are nearly silent. My theory is that this is because most of the fans at college games have, for worse not better, a little bit of their self-worth on the line.

  5. I agree, Micah...but those college crowds are getting pretty nasty. I read where one kid’s grandmother had died and the opposing fans were taunting him about it in a chant.

  6. Oh, I agree that the crowds are often cruel when referring to off the court incidents. It is one thing to rag on players for airballs but quite another because the player had an MIP or something.
