Rufus T. Firefly awaits...

  1. I’ve always had a great deal of affection for “The Coconuts,” Probably because it was the first Marx Bros movie I ever saw. One of the local channels used to run their movies at 9 AM on Saturdays when I was around eight or nine, and they were a revelation. As hard as I laughed back then, the movies only got funnier as I got older, and I laugh even harder today despite deep familiarity with the jokes (Hmm, maybe you should have saved some brain cells for later in life, I hear some say). I really loved Groucho’s snide comments to figures of authority, but was quite shocked when teachers, and later, bosses, did not appreciate my channeling his attitude and directing it towards them. Some people just don’t have much of a sense of humor, I suppose.

  2. “The Cocoanuts” is great fun...plus it’s interesting to watch the Marxes sort of “learn” how to make a movie. Great dialogue...like this:

Groucho : All along the river, those are all levees.
Chico : That’s the Jewish neighborhood?
Groucho : Well, we’ll pass over that.

  3. The mirror scene in Duck Soup is worth their entire filmography! Well at least it doesn’t irremediably suffer attempts at translation. Never watch it in French Mickey!

  4. Thanks for the advice. Besides, as we all know: The French version of “Duck Soup” would have Freedonia refusing to go to war. (insert rimshot here)

  5. Mickey,
the film critic (and blogger) David Ehrenstein from LA thinks that ‘Duck Soup’ and ‘Horse Feathers’ are essential viewing, with ‘A Night at the Opera’ (my personal favourite), ‘Monkey Business’ and ‘A Night in Casablanca’ not far behind”, so there you’ve got it!  Hope you and Michelle enjoyed yourselves!
