Does the Pope shit in the woods?
My first suggestion would be to check if you have the most recent drivers for it. It looks to me that the vertical mouse you have is now called “3M Renaissance Mouse” the drivers page for it is here:
http://www.3m.com/cws/rensoftware.html
If it’s still acting up then check it’s control panel you might find some settings you could tweak there. Hope this helps.
Posted by Luna_C on from from here to maturity 04/21 at 10:16 AMThanks, Luna...but I don’t C anything about Macs on that page. For now, I’m trying to use the mouse that came with the new machine...but with my left hand. An interesting challenge but hardly sustainable.

Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 04/21 at 05:19 PMIt sounds like your mouse is relying on USB drivers that are only partially compatible. In other words, it’s not officially supported. I did a search of the Mac gamer’s boards and found a recommendation for this thing called USB overdrive, which apparently resolves the issue. Unfortunately, it costs money.
Posted by Harry on from 04/21 at 06:37 PMFurther thoughts. There are some basic troubleshooting steps that might be good to run through.
Use the “Disk Utility” in the “Utilities” folder in your main Applications folder to repair disk permissions. That’s the most basic and generally gets the things acting funky back on track
Shutdown the computer and then restart while holding the P R Option and Command (has a little apple on it) keys simultaneously. You know you need to do this when folder and file icons start looking strange or changing from their default appearance.
If you feel comfortable working with a text screen, no user interface, try this handy little troubleshooting utility. It’s free and very effective http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
Posted by Harry on from 04/21 at 06:47 PMThanks, as always, Harry. I called 3M (maker of the mouse) and they said they’ve had trouble with this product and offered to send me a free replacement. I’m thinking I’ll wait to see how that one works before doing anything else. Is there any potential SNAFU in me downloading that USB overdrive if it turns out I don’t need it?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/21 at 07:49 PMIt does come with an uninstaller, so you’re not going to do any harm to your box. But if, as the manufacturer says, it’s a hardware problem, it’s not going to do any good. I think your wait and see approach is the wisest.
Posted by Harry on from 04/21 at 08:25 PMCool...thanks.
