Viva las vegans
Mickey, there is yet another important issue here...that of neurological diseases for which the causes are not adequately explained. The USDA and the FDA have been protecting the meat industry because the Cattlemen’s lobby is so powerful. Awhile back, I was in contact with Creekstone Farms. They wanted to test all of their meat but were prevented from doing that by the government. It is a very interesting story that most of the news media missed. Some feedlots are still not in compliance with all of the safety standards. I believe that BSE is far more widespread than they want us to know. Now, prion trype diseases are spreading through the wild animal population. Wasting disease of the deer herds of the northeast has become a concern, but still people hunt and eat the deer.
Posted by rosemarie jackowski on from 06/10 at 07:19 AMMickey, here’s a poem for you.
PRIONS, POLITICS, AND POETRY
I’ll take the pickle, I’ll take the bun
But hold the hamburger, my life’s not done
Bring on the greens, and beans, and rice
Cause eating animals is just not nice
Maybe in case you did not know
Dining on dead animals has got to go
Mother Nature has designed a great defense system
Ever wonder if the lab tests sometimes missed ‘em
A prion here, and a prion there
Is enough to give everyone a mighty scare
So let’s munch on some lettuce and an apple or two
But the Cattlemen have threatened, maybe they’ll sue
It happened to Oprah who was slapped with a suit
The Cattlemen want us to stay loyal and mute
With a wink and a nod, they say the herd is not Mad
The USDA protects them, for consumers that’s bad
Hers’s a radical idea that needs to be tried
The USDA should protect the people before they’ve all died
Till now the lobbyists and their money have won
But hang in there, the real fight’s just begun
Tonight for supper there will be no beef
How ‘bout some celery on a spinach leaf
And if the Cattlemen are angry and very offended
Is there a lawyer out there, so we can be defendedPosted by rosemarie on from 06/10 at 07:32 AMThanks for the poem, Rosemarie...and here’s an older article of mine related to prions: http://www.disinfo.com/archive/pages/dossier/id930/pg1/
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 06/10 at 08:46 AMMickey, I just read your article. That is one of the best on the Internet. I don’t know how I could have missed it. I will be referring a lot of people to it. It should be mandatory reading for everyone, especially parents of children. The whole issue of what is in vaccines and how so many doctors don’t even have information is amazing to me. I recently had a conversation with a doctor and asked him what he thought about thimerasol, and he asked me what that was.

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 06/10 at 03:22 PMMickey, some scary stuff! But .. I love my daily egg - do I have to give that habit up?
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 06/10 at 05:34 PMI could send you a ton of egg-related stuff, Helga. For now: http://www.vegsource.com/jo/qa/qaeggs.htm
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 06/10 at 05:48 PMHelga, move to the country, get yourself some chickens!
Disclaimer: my chickens have free run of 10 acres; my chickens live out their natural life (we eat no meat); I have a 14 year old rooster; them eggs taste damn good; in fact, it’s time for one! Or two.
Posted by joe on from connecticut 06/11 at 04:08 AMThose are some alarming figures but that dying from a heart attack seems a little much. People have been eating eggs for years I don’t think it is going to make a big difference to hae one a day like some people do.
What is probably bad is if you get them at a fast food place with all the stuff they use to prepare it.
