Shell-shocked Pete and the Downwinders
Hey Mickey, have you seen the movie “House of D?” Your stories in the first link reminded me of it. It’s pretty good, about a kid growing up in downtown Manhattan in the 70’s, going to Catholic school, getting in trouble. David Duchovney made the film, and Robin Williams is in it as a somewhat stereotypical mentally handicapped person (of course), but it’s a good movie. I don’t know if it is still out in the US, we have it here in PR but we get movies later than the States.
Posted by James on from Puerto Rico 06/21 at 07:52 AMI just found the trailer here: http://www.apple.com/trailers/lions_gate/house_of_d. I’d like to take your suggestion and rent it, James...but two hours of Robin Williams? I thought the Constitution protected me from cruel and unusual punishment. (And what’s with the Angela Davis clone in the prison?)
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 06/21 at 11:27 AMhey mickey, you still keep in touch with your old neighborhood buddies? what became of them?
Posted by RB on from 06/21 at 11:48 AMI’m not really in touch with any of them...except here and there. More than a few ended up dead or in prison...but most just moved on. As Dylan sang, “I don’t know how it all got started/I don’t know what they did with their lives.”
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 06/21 at 11:59 AMIt’s mostly about the kid, an actor I have never seen before, who is really good. The Davis clone is the singer, Erykah Badu, she’s pretty good as well.
I wasn’t too keen on seeing it either when my wife suggested it, but I liked it a lot...the director did a good job of capturing NYC in the early 70’s in my opinion, even though it was a little before my time.
if you could take Cinderella Man for two + hours, you might actually enjoy this one. Who knows though, right? Like I said before, I’m a big School of Rock fan (Jack Black), so what do I know.
Posted by James on from Puerto Rico 06/21 at 12:34 PMYou’ve got a point when you say: “if you could take Cinderella Man for two + hours, you might actually enjoy this one.”
I’ll rent it when I get a chance.
