How mad was the last cow you ate?

  1. Thanks for this one today, Mickey. I have not yet checked out Kelleher’s book, but I will soon. It has always been my belief that there is a connection between BSE and Alzhiemers. This whole issue might be the best example of the failure of the USDA and the FDA to represent the health and safety of the people but instead have caved in to the meat industry. A news report this week said that cattle brains and spinal cords are STILL being fed to poultry and hogs...... I have recently perfected my recipe for rice and beans. It is actually pretty good....  An excellent source of information is at this site. http://www.organicconsumers.org/madcow.htm

  2. Good stuff, Mickey - and Rosemarie. (Maybe you guyz could share some *very simple* veggie meal recipes, for those of us for whom coffee is a “staple.")

You know, I think I worry more about the animals than I worry about “joe.” Keep this perspective in front of our eyes, Mickey - we need it.  And, you’re right - this is a form of “direct action” available to all of us, all the time…

  3. if you type in “simple vegan recipes” at Google, you’ll get sites like this: http://www.veganoutreach.org/starterpack/recipes.html. A good cookbook like “Simply Vegan” will teach you how to replace animal ingredients and then you’re on your way.

When I give vegan talks, I always make sure to point out that we often eat “vegan” without calling it that, e.g. rice and beans, pasta in tomato sauce, green salad, fruit salad, falafel, hummus, cous cous, etc.

  4. Joe, you worry about the animals more than you worry about Joe, because you and Mickey have reached a higher moral plane than the rest of us. I am trying, but am not quite there yet......I don’t enjoy cooking but I improvised my own “rice and beans”. The secret was having a LOT of finely chopped celery, greenpepper, and vidalia onion, sautaeed in olive oil...then add the beans. The other important part for me, is a really good hot sauce....which brings me to the point of why I am boring all of you guys with a recipe. The AP reported this week that the Black Panthers are going to be marketing their own hot sauce, called “Burn, baby burn”.  I can’t wait to try it.

  5. I don’t know about any higher moral plane for me, but I’ll pass on the hot sauce. Spicy food is not my thing.

  6. The more of your posts I read the more I think I should turn vegan, Mickey!  I eat much less meat than I used to but still ...
    Thanks for your site!

  7. One step at a time, Helga...you’ll do it and never regret it.

  8. Hi Humans -
My house has been making me do things for it, today.  Nobody owns a house. (Or a car, for that matter.) Things own us, then we claim the “superior position,” while we cater to their whims and demands…
I think, Rosemarie, that there are mollusks with a more refined “moral compass” than I have.  I’ve stumbled and sputtered about for 54 years yet, somehow, I’m still standing.  (Wasn’t it Oscar Wilde who said:  “Sir, we’re all in the gutter.  The only difference is that some of us are lying face-up!")
Thanks for the various recipe tips.  I’ll try “a little” Burn Baby Burn on my rice and beans.  When I lived in Mexico City, there was a place which served a hot sauce called “Apache.” If one used too much ( and, I did not), ones lips often peeled, as after a bad sunburn…
I’ve read a bit about the BPParty, recently.  An amazing bunch of people, you know?  They made a real difference in many Black neighborhoods.  In return for their amazing courage and compassion and hard work, the government slaughtered them…

  9. PS - Hey, Helga, good luck to you!
Heck, good luck to all of us.
(Mickey is the guy with the compass, that’s why this is such a fine place to visit… )
