War in two Gulfs, liberals who can't resist a uniform, Sander Hicks & 9/11, and who rules who?
Bill Blum’s challenge to the never-ending mantra about the troops could bring about the end of the war, if those who protest the war would just read his writings. Tomorrow, at the Court I will have with me 100 copies of the Blum list of all of the countries that the US has bombed since WW2...just one more attempt to inform the Press.
Posted by rosemarie jackowski on from crossing the line 09/07 at 09:32 AMI thought “They Rule” was a goof...I was depressed and scared to realize it wasn’t.
Good luck to Sander with “The Big Wedding” and even better sales.

Yesterday I took a break and watched about 10 minutes of Democracy Now. They showed a bright, tough, 30-ish guy, wandering around in a boat, searching for and rescuing people. Some local firefighters, in their own boat, were sometimes moving along with him. The “30-ish guy” said that, when they encountered some “authorities,” earlier in the day - the authorities told them that they should stop doing what they were doing. After all, they weren’t authorized or trained to do search and rescue. He was astonished by their stupidity. ( This was day 6, after the storm, whenever that was - was it yesterday? ) The camera crew asked him how he felt about the government’s efforts down there. The guy looked momentarily stunned, then said: “What government? Look behind me, there’s water and half submerged houses as far as the eye can see - but not one boat, not even one. What government? And the government people we meet, tell us to stop what we’re doing.”Well, there you go. They really are just letting as many die as possible. The Klan took off their robes and took over the government, and they’re just watching the people die.
Ben Tripp wrote an article about New Orleans, a few days ago, titled: “Grab a Towel, You’re Next!” Oh, I believe him…

Posted by michael on from scotland 09/07 at 10:14 AMHello all…
I am without Internet at home and limited at work, but I read some of the great ideas of people to contact for Rosemarie in yesterday’s comments and will join in the emailing.
Mickey, I haven’t been posting for PBU in a long while, but I think her situation would be a great topic and would spread the word through a great many blogs. Part of the topic could be to come up with imaginative ways to help her.
There are a lot of these “blog rolls” out there, they can help get the word out and perhaps be a good place to find new ideas. I’ll look into it and will hopefully be back online at home by Saturday.

Posted by James on from Puerto Rico 09/07 at 11:13 AMGood idea, James. I’ll e-mail Deb now.
Welcome back, Joe.
Hello Richard and Rosemarie.
Michael: Did the book review post yet?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 09/07 at 12:10 PMA few years ago, my brother and I ran in to Al Franken late one night on an Upper West Side street corner. He was walking his dog and had obviously had a few.
Backstory: The first R rated movie my brother and I ever saw in the theater was Trading Places, with Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd. My brother, dad, grandmother and I went one afternoon while waiting for my mother to be released from the hospital after having given birth to my youngest brother. I was ten at the time (big age difference).
I remember my grandmother covering our eyes when Jamie Lee Curtis took her shirt off (a lot of good that did). It is still one of my favorite movies.
Those who have seen it might remember a young Al Franken as an Amtrak train bag checker fighting with his buddy as to who gets to drive the little tractor that pulls the luggage, getting drunk on the train and messing around with a gorilla. I always thought he was pretty funny in it.
Back to our meeting with Al:
My brother and I had had a few as well and went up to all saying we were big fans, he was pretty cool and talked to us for a while. One of us then mentioned that we loved him in Trading Places...he seemed to take offense at that, saying something like it “wasn’t his best work.”
Posted by James on from Puerto Rico 09/07 at 03:27 PMI think Franken’s best acting is his current work portraying a progressive on the radio.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 09/07 at 03:32 PMHi again, Folks -
It just occured to me that, maybe the Elites are killing off the people in NOLA because they’re angry or stressed. Well, I sure don’t want to end up like that. I suggest we create an “Adapt An Elite” program. Pick any Elite - Theresa Heinz Kerry or Ted Turner or the current CEO at GE or Bechtel or, maybe Don Rumsfeld. Hold a big gathering at a local park and sell tickets for a buffet lunch. The proceeds could go to make a couple of their Mercedes payments or some small fraction of a house payment or toward the kid’s second year at Yale. We can all help `em out, whenever we can. Hey, maybe then they won’t kill us all.
Love,
JoePosted by joe on from Oregon 09/07 at 04:13 PMIs that adapt or adopt, Joe?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 09/07 at 04:39 PMMay I suggest “Abort-an-Elite”? The proceeds would go to having everyone’s memory of the elite-in-question erased, a la “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”, instantly rendering said elite irrelevant. Donny who? What kind of Rice? Hillary what? Arundhati Roy would be so proud.
And speaking of Hillary what?...could she be advertising for Dunkin’ Donuts any more clearly in that shot of her with Al Franken?
Posted by Keir on from The Hague 09/07 at 07:44 PMBob Dole has his viagra. Hillary has her caffeine.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 09/07 at 09:04 PMIt’s fifth grade spelling, Mickey. Generally, if I don’t pause to look it up, I spell it wrong. When I was younger, as people “gasped” at my spelling, I’d say: “Hey, it’s unimportant. I can always hire someone to spell for me.” Unfortunately, I’ve never had enough money.
I just saw a film called “Crash,” with Don Cheadle and Sandra Bullock. Interesting work. I recommend it.
By the way: Caffeinated beverages help remove spots from garments, or so I understand. Apparently, Monica Lewinski avoided caffeine. You know the rest…
Posted by joe on from Oregon 09/07 at 09:30 PMI wasn’t teasong you, Joe...I imagined it working as either adopt or adapt.
Btw, how much does one make as a personal spell-checker these days?
