Health clubs, homeless, haiku, Honeymooners, and ha-ha-ha

  1. Another masterfully eclectic cat-alogue of posts. And http://kittenwar.com is worth it if just for the graphic on the top of a kitten wearing a military helmet.

Today is also Jimmy Carter’s birthday and the date that German troops entered Czechoslovakia in 1938, precipitating World War II, so they say… and the date in ‘08 that the Ford Model T went on sale. In a way, the latter might ultimately be the most damaging of these.

  2. I had hoped my Frank would be a vegetarian; alas, that obsession with pasta and oat milk was only a kittenish phase.

But MEOW… A Happy and Healthy World Vegetarian Day to All.  I’ll be celebrating and supporting it at the best pure vegetarian restaurant in the Delaware Valley: SuTao Café, about 15 miles west of Philadelphia in Malvern, PA.

    Love & liberation,

  3. If more Expendables send in pet photos, I’m running the risk of becoming the Regis Philbin of the Left.

  4. Lee, it is possible to feed your cat a vegetarian diet - at least so claims Barbara Lynn Peden in her book _Dogs and Cats Go Vegetarian_. It’s a rather old book, 1987, and was a very limited printing - I actually printed the 2nd ed. of it when I worked for a print shop in Florence, Oregon - but it may be available somewhere. The ISBN is 00941319-00-8 and publisher is Harbinger House, 06784 Canary Rd., Westlake OR 97493, but that’s not too likely to still be a good address. I think Harbinger House was just James Peden, Barbara’s husband. He’s who I dealt with.

It’s a very detailed book, dealing with the special needs of cats - taurine and other carotenoids I think - and how to formulate foods that meet their needs. It has recipes and sources, etc. Our cats pretty much supplement their own diet with birds and squirrels, but they live mostly outside in a fairly rural environment where that’s easy, so I haven’t actually tried any of the recipes.

  5. By way of a story: I’m looking for an apartment at the moment, my sixth in Barcelona but my first October search amongst all the students so what usually takes three days has stretched into two weeks and the only time I get to write is on the metro but I shall have somewhere by tomorrow - but if someone says ‘tomorrow’ to you in Spanish, beware: as Bill Burroughs noted, ‘mañana’ also means ‘wait until the signals are correct.’ Last couple weeks I’ve been seeing the same faces repeatedly and have formed small friendships with others tromping around town with printouts of addresses bunched in hand: a few students, German interns and a huge guy making a stopover from Basra who’d bought a medal with Saddam and Nebuchadnezzar on it for fifty bucks in a market and found out it was solid silver.

  6. My cats rely on the stuff I get them through http://www.vegancats.com. There I got Jed Gillen’s book, Obligate Carnivore, which discussed lots of interesting stuff about veganism in general, and deals with James Peden’s work and products. I order them the vegan dry food, and when I get to it, I use the Vegecat supplement powder to make meals for them that’s last a week or so.

But yeah, it can feel weird to cook for my cats when I don’t always have time to do so for myself.

  7. Interesting, James - glad to hear James is still viable. Amazing the connections we have in this little online community in Mickey’s living room!

  8. You guys are welcome to chat in my living room but could you ask your kitties to keep it down a tiny bit? I’m trying to watch the Yanks beat the Sox.

  11. Over the past year or so my project’s been co-authoring a new book that I hope will enable more Homo sapiens to go vegetarian.

After all, no obligates amongst our crew…

  15. What’s your book, Lee?

--Matsui was trying to avoid getting hit in the face! The 2nd b. never even tried to tag him, cocked back to throw while M. was still on the dirt… IMHO… Big Unit did ‘em proud!

  17. Another AL East crown for the Yanks. Very cool.

Great stuff, Owen. Nebuchadnezzar. Now there’s a name you don’t hear much these days. When I was in grammar school, I was asked to read in church because I was one of the few fifth graders who could pronounce Nebuchadnezzar in front of a large crowd.

Btw, did anyone get a chane to read my Vertical Club story? I was thinking there’d be plenty of guessing, re: my blind items.
