In defense of liars...
If you think these guys are cheats and liars:
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq has issued arrest warrants against the defense minister and 27 other officials from the U.S.-backed government of former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi over the alleged disappearance or misappropriation of $1 billion in military procurement funds, officials said Monday.
What about the guys who put them there?
I’m in mourning today. But this post cheered me up a little. Thanks, Mick.

October 11, 2005—JUDITH Miller, the New York Times reporter who spent nearly three months in prison for refusing to reveal a source, denies she’s getting a fat book deal out of her martyrdom. But the Wonkette blogger in D.C. reports she has speaking engagements booked through 2007. “All for going to jail for not talking. Sort of makes you want to stuff wads of bills down her throat, no?” Wonkette opines. “Figure that she’ll get at least $50K a pop, maybe one every other month, and, well, maybe she can buy some new friends or something.” A spokeswoman for the Times said: “Judy Miller does not have speaking engagements booked through 2007. She has few, if any, on the calendar at this point.”

Posted by tm on from a cloud 10/11 at 12:39 PMSantorum and Bono, now? Jesus H. Christ.
“In the United States, sport utility vehicles account for one of every four automobiles sold...” Maybe we should do a study here on penis size...see if there is a correlation.

Bono should get his Catholic ass over to Pakistan.
Has anyone heard of any effective ways to help?

I say: “It’s a mind-blowing concept that anyone takes Bono seriously.”
Good question, JOS, re: helping earthquake victims. I will look into it ASAP.

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/11 at 02:50 PMWhat will most of the 6+ billion inhabitants of Earth be doing toady?
A. Helping those among them who are in desperate need of food, medical care, housing, basic biological needs.
B. Scraping and clawing to survive because a tiny, tiny fraction of the Earth’s population completely controls all the economic, political, and social systems of the earth, and uses these systems only for their own insanely selfish benefit.

B. hit it right on the head, Joe. I happen to be struggling financially somewhat at the moment because I am trying to do some different things with my life and extricate myself from the multinational corporate world. But it sure does limit me from doing things I want to do...like buy books, help people, etc.
Of course, I am a lot happier and in the long run I hope to have those luxuries again but, damn…

Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/11 at 03:34 PMThanks everyone (captcha: friend). How corny is that?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/11 at 03:50 PMI very much know how you feel, JOS. Yet, I’d trade most of the crap I’ve managed to accumulate for a world of genuine friendship, brother + sisterhood, true community and compassion… Such things are beyond appraisal, and yet - I sure fucking hope - possible, in a world in which we’re not being consistently devoured by voracious elites.
Great, I even misspelled “captcha.”
My current word is: (In keeping with today’s main topic): corticosteriodal.
jeezPosted by joe on from Oregon 10/11 at 04:03 PMHi Everyone… I wasn’t really AWOL from here. I have been checking the site everyday. Thanks, for all of your good work Mickey and also others with the great comments. No way for me to catch up with all that I have to say. I was so moved with some comments a few days ago that I wanted to comment but didn’t have time to write a short one so wrote one that is too long to post here. Here is the link. There is something there for everyone to disagree with. http://world.mediamonitors.net/content/view/full/20891
Hey, Someone should tell Ward Churchill that I spent an hour on the Alan Colmes show defending him. I told Alan that Churchill’s views are really very mild compared to some of the rest of us. That comment led to an hour long on-air conversation.
James Loewen, the author that Mickey sites today is a fellow Vermonter. His books are very important especially for students.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 10/11 at 05:16 PMHey RMJ. Great to hear your voice. I agree that competitive sports often have a negative impact but, as Dave Zirin points out so well, there is some inspiration to be found in the sports world. I highly recommend Dave’s book.
Also, I’d submit that sports aren’t even in the same universe as religion...when it comes to having a negative impact. A whole ‘nother level (my captcha word).
As for Ward, I’ll pass along the word to Josh Frank who is interviewing him. He should know how hard you work to defend him.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/11 at 05:53 PMRosemarie, great to hear from you…
I have a personal anecdote about sports...I was extremely shy in high school...I tried out for the football team and in my sophomore year made varsity (this is a school of three hundred kids, so pretty much everyone who wanted made the football team). I was back up to the captain of the team, right tackle (both way, Mudge, c’mon, where are you?) The first game of the season he tore his knee all to hell...coach say’s, “O’Shea, you’re in!” I was 6’3 or 4 at the time, the problem was I weighed 170 pounds soaking wet. The guys I played against were well over 225 pounds of muscle. The first play I somehow got twisted between two of these behemoths, like they were wringing out a wet rag. I could breath or remember my name and I had to come out of the game. I soon as I got my wind back I demanded back in the game and held my own. I finally got some confidence in myself (a start, at least). I loved every minute I spent playing and I loved my teammates...we were always the underdogs and came out fighting. It was great. I wouldn’t ever change that…
Of course a million other kids probably had horrible experiences with sports, but not me.
Posted by JOS on from Puerto Rico 10/11 at 06:22 PMI hear you, JOS. Like many things, sports is not inherently good or bad. I have personal stories in which sports (or any form of athletics) served to bring me up and bring me down.
Professional sports, with its hero worship. corporate welfare, military fetish, and rampant materialism, is a symptom of our corrupt society...but that does’t mean we can’t sometimes marvel at athletic skill and tenamwork and enjoy the feeling of community brought on by rooting for the same team. It’s not black and white...few things are.

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/11 at 07:48 PMAs for lying, there’s a story in Teachings of the Buddha about a house fire that the children of the owner are too young (and too distracted) to quickly understand. The parent says, come out of the house; I have some wonderful toys out here. And they come out, and so they are saved from the fire. So, as in the poetry example, the main thing is how to best respect the parties in the given situation.
