It's all uphill from here...
“Mickey Z’s voice is the roundhouse kick of activist literature!”
I’ll try to come with some ball breakers later.
In the meantime it looks like Blinky is trying to out-Saddam Saddam:

is anyone even remotely surprised about this staged conference thing? i am only surprised that it has been exposed.Posted by michael on from scotland 10/14 at 09:46 AMMichael...that was the exact thought that came to my mind when I read about it.
The AP went as far as to call something that walks and talks like a duck...a duck, “Bush Teleconference With Soldiers Staged”:
Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/14 at 09:51 AMcan’t remember what its called but there is a book about how bush could not have been president in any other era other than this one. this is because there are autocues, staged press conferences with questions submitted in advance and all speeches are scripted to the minutest detail. these things were not all available in the past and politicians had to have the ability to think on their feet.
if bush did not have all this stuff then it would take people about two seconds to figure out that he would lose a battle of wits with a toaster.

Posted by Luna_C on from the Delta 10/14 at 10:15 AMthat’s a good one, Luna.
Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/14 at 11:20 AMThis piece (Iraq, The State We’re In) by Cockburn in the Independent is excellent, but very long, so expect to wait a while if you are running a dial up connection:
Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/14 at 11:30 AMJust received this tidbit from Sander Hicks’ mailing list newsletter:
* As is the case with former Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz, Michael Chertoff holds dual US/Israeli citizenship; a fact which, for Hicks and other 9/11 revisionists, casts a light on the questionable motives of Chertoff and the neo-cons. As head of Operation Green Quest, the multi-agency initiative to target sources of funding for terrorist organizations, Chertoff did little to stop terrorism. Chertoff was also one of the chief architects of Title III of the USA PATRIOT Act, and advised the CIA regarding the legality of torture at Abu Ghraib.*
Doesn’t all of that make you feel all safe and secure?

Posted by tm on from under ice 10/14 at 01:43 PMHi JOS and Michael and TM - and Luna. (JOS is right, Luna, great “one liner.")
If we can think of Bush as a hand puppet for the Elites, we can think of Hitchens as a fist, painted with eyes and lips, the way children sometimes do, so that when the thumb moves, it looks like the fist is speaking… Hitchens does not even get to be a puppet, they just paint him up with cheap children’s colors. Odd, but I just feel bad for both him and Bush. How terrible to waste a life in such ways…Mickey - you make a variety of personalities feel most welcome and comfortable. You quietly elicit respect from all, for all. You begin the conversations each day with a wonderful selection of writings and images which delight the eye and mind.
Most importantly, you seem to be a man of significant integrity, determined to live the words, rather than simply to speak them. And you seem to be profoundly mistrustful of government in all it’s dreadful guises, while courageously supporting all of us who stand against it. In short, “Bravo, Mr. Z.”Posted by joe on from Oregon 10/14 at 02:19 PMI think Joe just wrote the blurb for you, Mick...just throw in something about a roundhouse kick and you’re all set.
I guess those at Nick’s blog have more ball bustin’ ability than we do...at least so far.
Posted by JOS on from Isla Grande Airport 10/14 at 03:53 PMHello from damp, soggy NYC.
JOS: Thanks for the funny blurb and the steady supply of important links. Blinky Bush’s staged events remind me of the time before the first Gulf War when Saddam posed with Western children he was keeping captive, trying to look like he was enjoying their company.
Luna: Thanks. What exactly does GIF stand for?
Michael: What a really nice thing to say. Thanks.
TM: I remember during the first Gulf War, Hitchens debated Morton Kondrake and if it was a prize fight, they would have stopped it. Now, I can only wonder if he’s developed a brain tumor. What a remarkable and disturbing transformation.
Joe: Thank you. I can only dream of living up to your words...but you give me something to aim for.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/14 at 04:02 PMMickey, for your bio...The gentle concern for his fellow humans and the behind-the-scenes acts of kindness are surpassed only by the cuteness of that dimple in his chin.///////////////
Hi everybody, I have been thinking again and I figured out what is wrong with everybody here at Mickey’s...not only did I diagnose the malady, but here is the cure.

Peace,
Posted by Luna_C on from Workety Work Work 10/14 at 04:31 PMMickey Z was offered an upper management fast track career in corporate organ harvesting, but chose the penniless existence of an activist instead. In his rejection letter to the prospective employer he said he was afraid he “couldn’t make the cut”. To this day, no one knows whether that was his mordant humor at work or a sincere attempt at a communication with people who think terms of robust end user experiences and scalable, enterprise level solutions.
Posted by Harry on from 10/14 at 04:48 PM“I´ll tell you what I really think about politicians. The other night I watched some politicians on television talking about Vietnam. I wanted very much to burst through the screen with a flamethrower and burn their eyes out and their balls off and then inquire from them how they would assess this action from a political point of view.”
Harold Pinter, Paris Review 1966
Posted by Owen on from Barcelona 10/14 at 05:38 PMYour posts always make my day Mickey! LOVE the ‘uphill’ graphic. And I hope the weather in ‘damp soggy NYC’ improves soon - we have beautiful spring weather in Daylesford, Australia.
And hi JOS, Michael, TM, Harry and Owen (have I forgotten anyone?) - have a good weekend!
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 10/14 at 05:47 PMTurns out I have forgotten someone: Luna! My apologies ..
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 10/14 at 05:48 PMAnd I also forgot .. joe and rmj! I could not agree more with what joe says about Mickey - ‘you make a variety of personalities feel most welcome and comfortable.
Z.” Too true, joe! And a ‘bravo’ from me as well, Mickey!Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 10/14 at 06:00 PMHello Helga. Owen, thanks for that quote. Harry, if I work up the nerve, I will one day use your bio in its entirety.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/14 at 06:37 PMHi Everybody!
( This way, I can’t miss anyone, Helga! It’s called “Lazy!” )
Owen, that’s one hell of a quote. He deserves a prize just for that one saying…
I’ve tried to temper some of my more violent tendencies, over the years, but I still simmer with a pretty serious rage, at times. Anyway, bravo to Mr. Pinter, violent imagery and all…Posted by joe on from Oregon 10/14 at 07:00 PMA Mickey a day keeps political apathy at bay!
It’s like a poem. A bad one.
