TWU vs. MTA, chimps vs. children, Lenny vs. the censors, breasts vs. bombs & Expendables vs. Oprah
I say read a book, non-fiction; if there is a movie I say have it be a non-documentary.
Posted by J.N.R. on from Portland, OR 12/22 at 07:36 AMI vote for a fiction book.
Posted by Christine Hamm on from Astoria 12/22 at 08:54 AMFiction book first is my vote.
“Having” to go check out the rest of last night’s chatter. Nice to see some fresh faces!
Posted by Mudge on from Dear, dead Austin 12/22 at 09:18 AMGood day,
MZ, I always knew there was a reason I felt that likening bush to a chimp was insulting to the non-human primates.
Fiction book is my first choice as well.
I have a list of movies to see that is getting rather lengthy now since I wait for DVD or the cheap theatre...Constant Gardner, Good Night & Good Luck, Syriana...and others I just can’t think of at the moment.
George Clooney is also the proud driver of a very tiny electric Tango:
http://tinyurl.com/aq5xkPosted by Amelopsis on from canada 12/22 at 09:36 AMA sex offense to show your tits???
That is rather enraging. Should women (and gay men)be able to claim no fault for veering off the road if the site of a particularly unappealing man gut, plumber’s crack or other such were proved to be present at the time of the accident?
Will sex offenders claim they were driven to rape by the site of politically active breasts whereas the non political breasts just make them need to visit the bathroom?
Clearly there is nothing sensible in the “analysis” that children will be corrupted - omg - little girls will be traumatized by the realization that real women don’t have a stack that looks like you could use it for a book rest in bed -
OH! The Horror!!
Bugs me just a little - even though I would not choose to be running around baring breasts myself.
Posted by Amelopsis on from canada 12/22 at 09:44 AMG’morning, JNR, Christine, Mudge, and Amelopsis. Thanks for the votes. No rush to ake a choice but it’s nice to get the ball rolling.
I realize today’s post is “enough” for several days so I hope each item gets attention. I was moved in the chimp/children piece how easy it is to learn how to gum things up with unnecessary steps.
Amelopsis, I agree with your take on the Breasts Not Bombs. I thought it would be an interesting juxtaposition with today’s Lenny Bruce anniversary.
Gotta run for now. Doing laundry and waiting for the Verizon repair person. Fun day…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/22 at 09:58 AMAmelopsis #5: This is a complete crock. It’s back to the fear of the body, that somehow we are mere creatures of lust and if we’re allowed to look at breasts (what about men’s nipples? Playgrounds of the Lord, for all of me...we see them all the time in every imaginable place and no hue or cry) or >gasp< nudity, we’re going to be driven insane by our wild animal natures.
Gimme a break.
Crock, crock, crock. If it weren’t for these sorts of idiots, the nude human form would be simply an unclothed Homo sapiens and not cause for traffic accidents or moral outrage and, I wager, there would be VASTLY fewer sex offenders.

Posted by Mudge on from Dear, dead Austin 12/22 at 09:59 AMFrom the Main Post: “Daily News columnist Michael Godwin chimed in that the brave new competitive world of the 21st Century requires that workers grow up and give up benefits.”
Then working becomes slavery again. The money “they” reluctantly hand back to workers is barely enough, calculatedly so, for those workers to scrape by. In case of major illness? Oh well. no job, no money, no way to recover from the financial blow because you can’t wipe out any kind of debt in bankruptcy any more.
I wonder when regular folks are going to wake up and realize that this strike should be the opening salvo in a new war on greed and corruption.
Posted by Mudge on from Dear, dead Austin 12/22 at 10:25 AMSo if you commit any kind of sexcrime/thoughtcrime combo, you get put on the paedo-list? Woooah.
Its crazy that Yank officialdom is so down on the Saudis, Iranians etc. They’re conception of sexuality is near-identical. Ankles not Anthrax!I need some hot fiction, to warm up this cold miserable “england” of mine.
Ah, just one letter, and we’d be back to noisy wanking…
Posted by Mew on from England 12/22 at 10:48 AMNoisy wanking! What an excellent idea! (Just to be clear, “wanking” means Selbstbefriedgeitung, right?)
Posted by Mudge on from Dear, dead Austin 12/22 at 11:10 AMThe Breasts Not Bombs ban brings up a Lenny Bruce-ism: “If God made your body, and your body is ‘dirty,’ then the fault lies with the manufacturer.”
As far as the reading/viewing project, I lean towards a book, and further lean towards nonfiction (although since I read almost exclusively nonfiction it would probably be better for my general well being and balance to be inspired to read some fiction. And I have confidence that the nice folks here will find us something very interesting to read).
Or how about this: A book AND the movie of the same title. We could compare and contrast (which did you like better and why?) If a nonfiction book is chosen we could find a documentary about the same subject. That could get things nice and complicated. Anyway, this sounds like fun - an Oprah’s Book Club, but for people with more than half a mind (of their own)!
Posted by Rev Joe on from 12/22 at 11:13 AMA new United Nations campaign designed to raise awareness about landmines is apparently too explosive for American television. The execs have decided you shouldn’t see this...According to the U.N. website promoting the ad, the idea for the campaign is that “landmines may not be in your backyard, but they’re in the backyards of people all over the world.”
All US media outlets are refusing to broadcast this public service announcement… so have a look peoples…

Posted by michael on from scotland 12/22 at 11:15 AMRev Joe, I like the ‘film of the book’ idea.
Mudge, Selbstbefriedgeitung? Come again?
Michael, MOV’s take ages to dl on dial-up, but it surprises not a jot the US networks aren’t showing it...will it be broadcast anywhere else?
Posted by Mew on from England 12/22 at 11:22 AMHello, hello,
If it’s a book, I’m partial to fiction.
If it’s a movie, either way is fine.
For the record, I’ll take breasts to bombs any day. Also, I’ll take my chances with terrorist breasts. And furthermore, Sacramento is an armpit of a city (like my hometown a few hours south, Fresno), and they don’t deserve breasts anyway.
Lenny Bruce was, of course, way ahead of his time. His knack for making the comfortable uncomfortable was a model for the 60’s counterculture, and we all owe his legacy a debt of gratitude.
Great post this morning, Mickey.
Posted by Hawk on from Boulder, CO, USA 12/22 at 11:25 AM“Yes,” I see the Book Club idea is luring in lots of fun folks...with half a mind.
For now, however, I want to thank Michael for that landmine movie. Fuckin’ brilliant. I’ll post it here a few times over the next week. Do you have a website at which it resides (not just the movie URL)? If so, I maybe I can get Counterpunch to make it website of the day?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/22 at 11:26 AMSorry, Hawk, we were typing at the same time. Happens often with this “group.” If we are gonna vote, I will second your motion. Breasts over bombs...every single time.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/22 at 11:27 AMHello Mickey and everyone.
I wouldn’t call myself a “newcomer”, because I have been here almost everyday since you started this wonderful site, and yes loooong before RMJ,(hello Rosemarie, I hope you are doing well)
I work one of the biggest library in Europe, and Mickey, you can thank me for ordering your book (A Gigantic Mistake), eventhough it took long time to get it.
Back to the topic; books
Hmmm, hard to choose. I say non-fiction. How about Fanon; Black Skin, White Masks.

Thanks, Hope. Now that you’ve joined in, here’s to your future comments.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/22 at 11:33 AMOkay, not much info online about this out-of-print classic of the self-’help’ genre, but maybe Mudge has heard of it/lived it:
http://tinyurl.com/8yl3sAlso, been fixated on Waking the Dead, starring Jennifer Connelly and Billy Crudup. Very moving, for me anyway:
http://tinyurl.com/8dvavShould get a Frank the Auto-Free (though not lately) Kitty update later this afternoon.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 12/22 at 12:02 PMHope, great to hear from Denmark-- my last name’s Langergaard, my dad was born there, with 8 brothers and sisters so I have cousins all over the place. Wonder if you ever run into any of them…
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 12/22 at 12:05 PMMichael #12: BRILLIANT! Of course it’ll never be seen here, it’s real.
Mew #13: “Mudge, Selbstbefriedgeitung? Come again?” Exactly! It’s German for “self-joy-giving.” Ahem....
Hawk #14: “His knack for making the comfortable uncomfortable was a model for the 60’s counterculture, and we all owe his legacy a debt of gratitude.” Drag that back to Mencken, and we have a thread through Murrican society worthy of our praise and gratitude.
Hope #17: Welcome, thanks for de-lurking. Interesting book suggestion. (MZ, have we any idea what form the selection process will take?) I second MZ’s comments in #18...come back and post as often as you like!
James #19: Oh ha ha. BTW, wasn’t there something in an earlier message about not being here...? Too busy...? Uh huh. Addict!
Frank should be getting another big whammy here in 17 minutes.
Off to prepare. I look forward to a Frank update, with excellent “results.”

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/22 at 12:22 PMGreetings to all. These days it’s non-fiction books and feature films for me, but I’m good either way. Maybe picking a theme or subject would guide the process more easily?
Posted by Cart on from near Warshington DC 12/22 at 12:27 PMHi Everyone! Don’t let me fool you by not posting very often. I stop by here everyday and even try to make it through everyone’s posts in the comments section too. I swear one of these days I’m gonna set up an Expendable forum and drag you all kicking and screaming over to it. lol
I usually choose “C” and try to grab everything attractive on both sides of the fence. However there’s so much out there you have to get interactive to find the good stuff. Let the really important stuff find you, those “Something trying to tell me something” kind of moments if that makes more sense.
Funny wasn’t “Bombers” an old slang term for breasts? I seriously hope our world evolves someday to the point where erotic acts of love and the joy of titillation supplant violence and death in popular culture. Wouldn’t it be nice if parents only had to worry about how many breasts there kids see on TV each day and not how many murders?

Re a book to read: I’ve started reading ‘The Great War for Civilisation’ by Robert Fisk and can’t recommend it enough.
As for films, ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ is a must-see film. Thanks for the Clooney link, Amelopsis!
‘King Kong’ is too long by at least an hour even if Naomi Watts is superb. I prefer the 1933 version although there are some spectacular special effects in Peter Jackson’s latest opus.
And tm: seeing General Electric owns NBC, one cannot expect criticism of wars or militarism really on their programs can one?

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/22 at 03:19 PMHi All, thanks tm for the GE link. I am a former employee of GE. That was a long time ago. Yep, GE is one of the bad corporations, the problem is, it is hard to find any business or college that is not involved in some way with the Big Killing Machine. My daughter and I used to have conversations about ethical careers/employment. I said that one of the few I could think of was “organic farmer”. She said,"Meteorologist". Even small businesses are often sub-contractors in the War Machine. Maybe that’s why Ward Churchill used the “E” word.

Posted by Hope on from Denmark 12/22 at 03:32 PMHi folks, sorry for not posting much today or yesterday, but had a friend’s birthday do yesterday & today getting ready to go away to my sister’s. Hopefully keep posting over the next week or so, but will depend on what’s going on.
A lot of great postings today (& yesterday) & I want to be replying, but I haven’t got the time at present. I do think the book should be non fiction, though. As for the movie, am quite happy with either fiction or documentary. Sorry not to have seen the movies referred to, but they haven’t opened over here yet, or I’ve missed them if they have.
Also, like one of the posts mentioned the other day, some of the movies are bloody hard to find on DVD. If they get a cinema release, Manchester has a couple of splendid cinemas that take a broad range of material on, so that shouldn’t be a problem. But shops like Blockbuster are a waste of time when looking for some titles; another problem when corporatisation - lack of variety. Small, independent rental shops can be splendid, but the last ones near me closed down when the behemoths moved in. Swine.

Okay, I hired both Mayor Daley and Karen Hughes to count the votes so far. It seems a fiction book is the top choice. Let’s give it a little more time but next week, if that’s the choice, we can vote on particular books.
In case anyone’s interested, I’m fine with either fiction or non-fiction but I’m not into a “classic,” per se. Also, no reason why we can’t all try to watch the same movie every now and then.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/22 at 07:07 PMNever thought of that write and transfer thing. I shall adopt forthwith. Excellent and thanks!! But would it have killed y’all to tell me this BEFORE I responded to 15 posts?!
MZ, have you seen Turtles Can Fly yet? That damn kid Satellite can hollers his lungs out, and does, but the story is so moving it made me mist up.
God, I sound llike the drippiest little Poindexter going, don’t I? Cryaing all over the place, sharing my feelings, ewwww. MZ, tell ‘em I’m not some neurasthenic little poet but a large and hearty carnivore!
Helga, I’m too traumatized to go look up the number, but thanks for the German correction. I have a sneaking suspicion I’ll forget it shortly, but at least I can never say I wasn’t told!
Posted by Mudge on from Dear, dead Austin 12/22 at 07:58 PMOh, and if we’re doing non-fiction, I’d like to consider Hope’s Fanon selection.
Posted by Mudge on from Dear, dead Austin 12/22 at 08:01 PMYeah, Mudge is no little Poindexter. He’s actually a large Poindexter.
Haven’t seen Turtles Can Fly yet but we’re getting a DVD player this week and that will makes renting easier.
As for the book “club,” Fanon would work for me, too. Anyone else? Joe?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/22 at 08:31 PMJames the Sellout Proofreader for the Evil sent me a link to a New Yorker piece about Knut Hamsun. It contains these lines of aid and confort to Michael from Scotland, and possibly to the cahgrin of the Englies who remark among us:
“...in “The Last Joy,” from 1912, Hamsun couldn’t contain himself: ‘England will soon have to establish old folks’ homes for its children, most likely. It unsexes its people with sports and fixed ideas; if Germany hadn’t kept it in a state of perpetual uneasiness, it would have turned to pederasty in a couple of generations.’”
I got a huge giggle out of this, and whoa, Nelly, does he rabbit on!
Posted by Mudge on from Dear, dead Austin 12/22 at 08:54 PMRev Joe-- suggestions for books made into movies:
good ol’ Notes From Underground, but only reading the Signet translation,
George Orwell’s Keep the Aspidistra Flying, filmed at A Merry War; kinda bored of the book/movie of 1984 now.
Batman Begins was the best superhero movie in years…
Mudge, Roddycat and I are too busy making more burnt offerings to our Dark Lord to read all the New Yorker Hamsun piece now, as Frank is doing better but still must stay overnight at the vet’s to be um, expressed every 6 hours. Then we’ll see later.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 12/22 at 09:42 PMHope, no I don’t speak much Danish-- I know what Langergaard and Kierkegaard mean, and farfar and farmor. I used to be able to say Merry Christmas in Danish, but my vocal cords are too Americanized now.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 12/22 at 09:45 PMOne of my favorite movie/book combos (meaning both are great, in my eyes) is Fight Club. Also, The Godfather and Requiem for a Dream, to name a few.
James, I’m hoping for good news for Frank tomorrow. He’s gonna be so psyched to see you and Roddy.
I’m signing off soon. In case I don’t get back on, I’ll urge everyone to stop by tomorrow to wish Jesus an early Happy Birthday. Spread the word…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/22 at 09:56 PMOh, I did go visit him after work today (Frank, not JesusZ). He looked really happy, and told me to give a head rub to every Expendable out there…
We’re taking it all in “steps”.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 12/22 at 09:58 PMMickey I forgot if I asked you this before-- a friend tells me that Fight Club is a rare case where the movie is actually better than the book. Did you think so?
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 12/22 at 10:00 PMChagrin? Hell no. I can see my country from where I’m sitting...Not sure what exactly the man Hamsun is on about there, but it sounds nasty, which is fine by me.
All this talk of nordicness, I’m descended from Normans, who were sort of vikings I think. Um, sorry, thats the best I could do, and it means nothing nearly 1000 years later of course.
I don’t feel that confident recommending anything. Last decent fiction I read was Kundera’s The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, and that might a bit too (argh, can’t think of another word, and I really tried) wanky.
Posted by Mew on from England 12/22 at 10:10 PMIntereting site, must go an keep Punkin entertained try this though:

Posted by Mudge on from Dear, dead Austin 12/22 at 10:26 PMFeeling encouraged by a topic that is tangential to my own job, publishing, I make my first post. I vote Contact as a brilliant book to movie. Jodie Foster is a hard-core alien-loving scientist in it-- what could be hotter?
But since it does seem to be the sad truth that the movie is almost always worse than the book, I generally make a point of seeing the movie first (to enjoy it) and then reading the book (to enjoy it more). That way the movie is not such a disappointment. I like Contact in both formats. Maybe even enjoyed the movie more, O, Jodie.
Then again, there is reality, where I own all the books of the movies I’ve seen, but have only read a few… why? Laziness? Ambivalence? No, I think I just hate spoilers more than bad cinema. Speaking of: I’m watching Muskateer tonight. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Posted by Zoot on from BIllyburg 12/22 at 10:29 PMI should be sleeping but I wanted to say hello to Zoot. Thanks for posting. I saw the film Contact and liked it...especially the atheist angle.
Hello Mew and Mudge.
James, I loved the Fight Club movie but thought the book was superior.
This time, I’m signing off for real. Thanks, everyone. I’ll see you tomorrow.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/22 at 11:11 PMContact was a great movie. However I have to say the book explained the math of the signal better. The whole PI thing was brilliant.
Batman Begins had a Strong as hell first and second act. the third left me feeling a bit flat. I have to counter with the best super hero flick being IMO “The Incredibles”
Fight Club the film, I feel, is really complemented by the book. There is so much more detail that adds to the experience of watching the movie.
Gosh, you know, I know there’s a better example of where the movie is better then the book. But for the life of me the only thing I’m coming up with is “Sin City” lol
You know it’s late and someone is on vacation, enjoying spiced rum when…
