as for the post. Mickey mouse, McDeaths, Coca-Cola etc are just the first outposts of empire.

can’t send the army? then send the films, the music, the food and all else. not to say i don’t like some of the films and the music (quite frankly, you can keep McDeaths).

this is not being ‘anti-american’. it is simply that that is how empire works. better than forcing people is to convince them that you want what the dominant groupd has.

i believe they used to call it pax-romana

Michael thanks for posting those sites and for helping so much to get the word out.

McDonalds - I don’t even know where to begin with that. The golden arches are almost synonymous with the likes of Kellog-brown & Root, halliburton, etc. They of course are in a different commodity, but the result is the same.

I share Michael’s thought that it’s much like the Pax Romana.

I only wish more parents would take a long moment to consider Disneyland & Mickey Mouse before they go along with the pack and get their wee ones all hooked on the junk. Hard to ween them off it later, to be sure, and most don’t even see why, or that they should (IMHO)

Well, this will go down in my book as “The Miracle at Mickey’s”. You guys have created a Dream Team to take care of my legal/justice issues. When we win, we should have a big party. Because of your efforts, I took a few minutes off last night to write a little article, not related to anything important. Just wanted to plug Blum’s book.
Mickey, being a home owner is a life changing and head changing experience. I’m sure that you already know that. In spite of all of the problems with maintenance, etc., there is a peaceful satisfaction with having a, more or less, permanent space. It is a trade off...trading freedom and mobility for security. Best wishes to you and Michele. On the housing topic, best wishes to you, too, Mudge and all others who have had recent housing issues. None of us is really ever secure. Just when you least expect it, the unimaginable can happen and change your life forever.

The head and heart need a place to rest

Hi All, Mickey, I know what you mean about $$$. I was making slow but steady progress in paying off my mortgage. Then I was hit by the truck. Now I know that I will never have my house paid for.
About Coca-cola and water. That is a big issue. The entanglement of the IMF and US corporations has jeopardized water resources in many places. John Perkins hit on that issue in “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man”. Water wars are coming.

Sonia Shah is highlighting some very important and very shady aspects of the cola brand’s corporate behaviour in the third world. India is also very particularly suffering in respect to the uses of drinking water by the cola manufacturer:
Villagers now have more job opportunity, but their clean drinking water is now unavailable or polluted.

James re#10, I have a blogging friend in Tunisia who’s discussed this issue from her personal perspective and while I’ve not given it too much consideration, the crux is that if collectively individuals in predominantly Muslim nations choose to boycott, they are simply excercising their right to express their discontent. And following the same logic, if a nation is under Islamic rule, it also makes sense to me if they choose to endorse the boycott formally.
Whether offense was intended or not is irrelevant, I think, it is the effect that’s been had and if companies are going to talk about the rights of a free market then they should just take it into consideration as part of their doing business in the Middle East (and elsewhere)

Hey Amelopsis-- the more I read various news links about this, more complicated it’s looking, with the far-reaching ramifications for Scandinavians abroad and other free speech stuff in the mid east, etc., but as for the boycott, sure, go for it, but for one thing, unfortunately it seems it might most directly affect the local workers employed by the Danish factory in Saudi or wherever it is. But also, it’s not just a boycott, it’s the threats of fatwah and whatever other violence proposed against Danes if they don’t issue unconditional apologies…

Gotta love that image of Hamlet on the main post. Those crazy Danes!

oh, and for the purposes of that programme - to be a ‘scottish nationalist’ does not mean the same thing or carry the same connotations as ‘nationalist’ does in other parts of the world. it just means you are n favour of scotland leaving the UK.

James it seems I typed much too hastily. Seems I missed a whole bunch of detail in the article. A boycott is about the limit of what I would condone as reasonable in my books. Beyond that I just dont’ think is warranted, and of course no violence - GEEZ - there’s enough of that going around already

Michael, I’ve always been in favour of the UK being disbanded. I never understood the bullshit behind empire building, & England hardly has the best record of rule.

For me, Britain = oppression, England = home. Why should Scots (or the Welsh or Irish, or Australians etc etc) consider our fuckwit of a Queen their sovereign? It’s bad enough she’s on the English money.

Michael, the dismemberment of Britain (or any artificial State) would be no sadness to me. Like half-worms turning into whole ones. (Or something. Possibly thats a bad metaphor, I’m too frazzled from work to know.)
And maybe, just maybe, we could put an end to this these perrenially tedious efforts at defining “Britishness”. That’d be a very welcome side-effect.
(I’m fairly sure I posted a link to that “Scotland would be better off” story here a while back. The Indy ran it I think.)

Right now C-span 2 is airing its Impeachment program with Ramsey Clark and others. Also forgot to mention that when the State of the Union speech starts many people will be going to different major media sites and typing in “IMPEACHMENT”. I would prefer “War Crimes Trials”...
