If it's March 17, this post must be about St. Patrick's Battalion

  1. Hey, that time for reading the Rebel sounds good to me. Should be organized enough and stuff by then. And talk to me if you need help moving-- just not with the driving, of course! Esp. on a wknd day… check later, off to try to get some exercise before work again

  2. And hey, here’s something to start up discussion about when anyone gets a chance (that article about St. Patricks’ battalion is cool, read it a bunch of times before)-- anybody help me out with a reliable link to how horrible Starbucks is? I say this as someone that’s been frequenting the one outside my office almost every day. I confess. But what I mean is, how is Starbucks any worse than the assholes at the local deli across the street? I’ve heard of all kinds things about evil corporate business practices, and yes it’s creepy seeing them on like every 2 street corners here, but again, the guys at the delis are jerks too and their coffee is terrible, no soy milk available, etc.... and I know, the last you need James from Hell’s Kitchen is another cup of coffee, but one thing at a time, okay. I just, just know I can’t really be a good leftwingnut and still shop there, but what else am I going to do? I need to run on more than instinct here about what to do.

Also, just so you know, whenever I need to use sugar in baking, I steal lots of raw sugar packets from Starbucks. So that must count for something, right?

  3. Mickey, nice one. I’m easy about when we start talking about Camus. I finally watched that meat video from yesterday and goddamn! I feel like I’ve really lapsed and I thank you for passing on the valuable info.

James, can’t you keep soy milk at your office and buy coffee without milk from the Deli-jerks? If McDonald’s did a vegan burger would you patronize them?

What distinguishes the deli-jerks from the Starbucks people is
    1. everyone in NYC is a jerk to some extent
    2. Starbucks would fire people for being jerks to customers
    3. Starbucks therefore don’t belong in NYC. Isn’t their coffee totally overpriced anyway? (I’ve never been there.)

Personally, I don’t use coffee as a drug for keeping up during the workday. Once or twice a week, as a way of unwinding over a conversation in a cafe, now that’s more like it. I know how that sounds, but hey, I live in Yurp.

  4. Thanks Keir-- I guess I needed to hear stuff I basically already know. They really are as bad as McDonald’s, aren’t they? I’m sure there’s plenty of websurfing I could do after work to dig up more dirt on them, but that Rev. Billy guy can get really annoying, esp. in person. Actually I take my coffee black, it’s just the idea that SB offers soy and the regular deli doesn’t. Yeah, SB coffee does taste kind of wrong, but it’s still better than the regular deli coffee. Oddly, the coffee at the cart on the street is better than both, and cheaper, too. But they’re only out til 11 a.m. or so.

Now, why I need to drink coffee past 11a.m. at work is another story, I guess.

  5. Still absorbing yesterday’s links. That Milosevic article is a good one-- I guess that Rogue State would detail a lot of the Baltic bombing crimes, if I could get my hands on it. It was still sold out at Coliseum books last time I was there. And I seem to have spend more time reading the NaNoEdMo site than NaNoWriMo. I might have this backwards…

Maybe I’m not in such bad shape if I just stay off the evil corporate coffee-mongers.

  6. Sounds fine for me to start talking about Camus too. I just found an apartment in the gothic neighbourhood (my first and favourite barrio here, rooftop terrace for writing/playing/mooching, streets without billboards!) with an Israeli jazz guitarist so Owen´s upheaval is over, well that one anyway.

  7. James, Naomi Klein´s No Logo I remember having good stuff about Starbucks.

  8. About the Rebel, perhaps we could talk about it after a few chapters too?
Oh and happy St. Ptah´s day too. I´m going to be playing tonight but I might stop by an Irish bar in Gracia where a friend is bringing his manouche group provided they can keep the puke off the ceiling.

  9. Hey Owen, yeah, NK is great, wish could do more websurfing at work for her now…

    ...puke on the *ceiling*?

  10. Hello James, Owen, and Keir. I’ve been mighty busy today with moving-related stuff but I see it’s been slow again here. I’m flexible the discussion plans, re: The Rebel. As of now, it’s hard to imagine too many folks being involved but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a productive conversation. Also, as reading progresses, it’s cool for anyone to bring it up in the comments section.
