Parenti does culture
I like the bit about the student saying he was only getting one perspective and Parenti’s reply. Very cool.
As for Sean Hannity, it’s hard for me to believe people actually take him, or Bill O’Reilly, for that matter, seriously.
Then again, it was hard at the time for me to believe that people were taking the case for war against Iraq seriously, what with the blatant transparancy of so many of their deceptions, but, needless to say, they did.
Which probably goes back to Parenti’s point I just referred to…
Posted by Jeremy on from Taiwan 04/09 at 11:43 AMYesterday I started reading a very interesting book on cultural history, <a href="http://tinyurl.com/m9me9 “
rel="nofollow"> Fallen Soldiers</a>. Here’s the jacket excerpt:"The enthusiasm which youth had once felt for war as adventure or personal fulfillment was difficult to sustain after experiencing the reality of war but the nation, using the Myth of the War Experience, was able to keep the flame alight. The Nazis knew what they were doing when they made the cult of the war dead and the cult of their own martyrs central to their own political liturgy. The cult of the fallen was of importance for most of the nation...the inability of the Left to forget the reality of the war and to enter into the Myth of the War Experience was a gain for the Right, which was able to exploit the suffering of millions for its own political ends”Posted by sk on from 04/09 at 12:26 PMHi Mickey, Jeremy, and sk… I get some criticism for taking notice to right wing corporate media. But, I consider it part of my work. Most people in the USA get their information from those corrupted sources. I think it is important to sometimes watch right wing media and wish that more writers with views in opposition to theirs would challenge them instead of leaving the field wide open for them to spread their misinformation. My writings are not intended for people like MZer’s, who are well informed. When I write something it is usually directed to the average man in the street...the guy with a 6 pack under his arm, a Bush or Kerry bumper sticker on his pickup truck, and NASCAR on his mind.
sk, You got it right when you talk about the Left and the cult of the war dead.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 04/09 at 01:46 PMFolks, it’s good to know there are oasises like this one. Today’s posts, & RMJ’s excellent article, are strong validation of my belief in people being essentially capable of being what they want. A great shame so many people don’t, for whatever reason, challenge conventional wisdom sufficiently.
Charlie Sheen in his recent interview with Alex Jones is a case in point - he expressed his incredulity over the handling of 9/11, and immediately the sneering articles went out. A total shame, but my respect for Sheen went up enormously.
Best to y’all!
Posted by Chris Wood on from Manchester, odd wet lovely Manchester 04/09 at 04:20 PMHey Jeremy, SK, RMJ, Chris, and everyone else stopping by for a look. I can only hope you all have weather as sweet as ours here in NYC. Another busy one for me today, but the good news is that Grandma Helen is doing much better.
I’ll be back later in the “evening.”
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/09 at 05:10 PMMickey that is great news about Grandma Helen. My 95 year old Mom fell yesterday, needed a couple of stitches, but says she feels fine and won’t let a little fall slow her down.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 04/09 at 06:22 PMHey Congratulations Grandma Helen! Have you gotten her started kickboxing yet?
Looks like yesterday’s story was good luck to me-- off to another temp overnight proofreading job… I mean, it sucks, but I need it for now, etc. See you tomorrow!
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 04/09 at 07:15 PMGood luck, James...and best wishes to your Mom, RMJ.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/09 at 07:17 PMG’night, all. I’m hoping someone will leave one more comment so we don’t slip into the dreaded single digits.
Where are JOS, Mudge, the Empress, Joe, Hawk, Michael, Keir, Owen, Cart, Mew, RT, Helga, Youngfox, Hope, and the rest of the Expendables?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/09 at 07:57 PMNo fear about single digits. We’ll take care of that right now...Good luck, James and thanks for the thoughts to my Mom, Mickey.
The immigration movement is growing. I have a good feeling about our “new” neighbors bringing about some needed changes here in the USA.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 04/09 at 08:08 PMI’m such a Parenti fan - thanks for this post, Mickey!
And a belated ‘hi’ to all my fellow expendables - did not go on the computer yesterday.Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 04/10 at 02:11 PM
