Happy Earth Day!

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 04/22 at 04:55 PMIt’ll be okay, Mickey. An odd time of flux all over the place. Worked almost 80hrs this week, next week maybe zero, weird freelance life. Hoping your mom test out okay after the shingles; mine’s had some good exp. lately with a weight loss program at a local hospital. See how it goes, thanks for the thought-provoking earth day post, good stuff.
Someone wake up Uncle Mudge, okay?
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 04/22 at 05:55 PMEarth Day means a lot to me.
I recall the huge crowds that first gathered in Washington DC ‘round 1970. I did not attend-- but the impact was widely reported. It was like a piece in the puzzle that declared: Nixon! You are on your way out!-- Americans are taking their country back!
I was a child at the time.
Celebrating the earth was a novel concept for everyone. (And one that very few could disagree with!) Stewart Brand’s Whole Earth Catalog, “Spaceship Earth,” sustainability-- these too were exciting new tools and concepts. “Tools” was a key concept-- we were going to build a better future. In some ways we succeeded, I think,-- in other ways our desires were co-opted, making us worse off:
see: http://tinyurl.com/zptqwI wonder what memories today’s children will carry with them from today’s activism? What will strike their imagination?
I am curious, why of all the planets, is the earth’s name not capitalized? Somehow I find that very charming and beautiful.
A tip for tomorrow:
Howard Zinn will be the guest on Robert W. McChesney’s Media Matters. http://tinyurl.com/p8k58
Maybe some thoughtful expendables can tune in and perhaps call in with comments and questions (if it is a live program-- usually is.)
Best wishes to all,
