Eye of the beholder

  1. Good morning to all...Yep, I’m a Colbert fan. That half hour is often the best entertainment of the day.

  2. That movie seemed just kinda mediocre last night, not sure why. Off to a temp job all afternoon/night now… really glad not to travel through that part of queens anymore. I’d often get a bus back to Maspeth from that strip along Queens Plaza, and remember how all the prostitutes would hang out in that main donut shop there. Some were really nice, others really creepy. Yeah, some things don’t change with gentrification.

  3. Hello RMJ and James. I won’t be around much here today...it’s a social Saturday for us and then tonight we’re headed here:

  5. Robert #4...That is a thoughtful comment that you link to. I agree that it is a bit sad but I also think that Colbert’s satire is a wonderful teaching tool that will reach many who are otherwise unreachable. I was really impressed with Colbert’s genuine tenderness when he spoke about his children. It made me think that he must be a really nice guy.

  6. good points RMJ--

  7. Robert #6...Thanks. I did not realize that there was that much of a backlash against Colbert. I did not think that his performance was mean spirited in any way. Looks like the Press can’t stand the truth. I have often said that the Press and the government educational system (public schools) made this war, which started in 1991, possible. Without their complicity there probably would be no war.

  8. Good points from both Robert and RMJ. Satire is indeed no panacea but it can provoke much needed thought.

  9. The carping about Colbert from the cozily tucked in media personalities followed the standard scripts. He’s not funny. He was mean. He was indecorous, out of line and inconsiderate. Etc. . . but really, what on earth did they expect from a professional satirist? Those people can be brutal. They can ruin someone for good when they’re on their game. It’s like telling a kickboxer not to hold back and then crying when he takes it seriously.

I think they thought their social status would put them a little bit more off limits. Colbert had nothing to lose (well. . . that remains to be seen) and the chance of a lifetime to take down one of the most deeply unpleasant, sanctimonious, useless pompous collection of privileged ninnies on the planet. I read that transcript and he taxed them but good.

So they moan about his performance, fatheaded and altogether unaware that the sorry schtick they call their careers makes parody really difficult.

  10. Bravo, Mr. Scruggs. Hope all is reasonably well with you. I’d love to see you more often around these parts.

  18. I sort of hoped the book was a hoax. But it’s not. Here it is. It’s got endorsements, too, from prominent liberals. That’s an awful to put children through, but I guess it’s one way to recapture the White House.
