Conquer Haste
The half-filled water bucket makes great splashing noises; the full bucket is silent.
Posted by RT on from The Buyou City 05/11 at 07:06 AMsome favorite Bob Marley quotations off the top of my head:
“Only machines make money.”
“Do your best, but do it slow.”
Least favorite song: “We’re Jahmen” (sic)
Favorite Song: Pale Moonlight
Marley’s kids turned out ok, I think… (they seem to all be very talented). Always felt sorry for them because how could they have known their dad?

But you can’t fool all the people all the time. How long shall they kill our prophets

No explanation for that, make of it what you will.
Thanks for the excerpt, MZ. I’m going to attempt the excercise myself the next time something arrives in the mail that isn’t a bill or recycling. (It could be a while)
Bob Marley’s another person who I wish could’ve lived longer...he could’ve been an even greater positive force for positive change, would’ve been nice to see him have the chance at least.
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 05/11 at 07:56 AMAre we doing quotations today? OK, with apologies I will give one of my own by RMJ.
A QUOTATION
I want to surround myself with people
who are never bored, people who never sleep,
never wait, never are patient, never make excuses…
people with a fire burning so deep in their gut
that it fills every cell of their body…
people with a passion so great
that it explodes across the countryside
like a wild hurricane.
I need people who never ask for justice,
but who demand justice NOW.
It is only the dissatisfied, the troublemakers,
the hard-core resisters who can make this
a better place.
RMJPosted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/11 at 08:13 AMI couldn’t agree more Amelopsis ("Bob Marley’s another person who I wish could’ve lived longer...he could’ve been an even greater positive force for positive change, would’ve been nice to see him have the chance at least.")
After his death in ‘81 (and his iconization by white music moguls)-- we had the crack-Cocaine-Contra decade—a lost generation. Many of the greatest reggae stars died even as they rubbed elbows with the ever hedonistic (and shallow)Stones-- Jamaican violence just grew-- Reagan invaded Grenada--
One can only speculate-- but my guess is that had Marley lived he would be a voice against brainwashing. He would be a stronger advocate for the power of love in the world (it’s interesting to see where his music was beginning to go at Tuff Gong). I think he would have eventually decried the drug trade as a manifestation of Babylon.
I don’t think he could be have been bought: he was too proud, too original, too smart.
Posted by Robert B. Livingston on from San Francisco 05/11 at 08:59 AM“What life has taught me
I would like to share with
Those who want to learn…Until the philosophy which hold one race
Superior and another inferior
Is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned
Everywhere is war, me say warThat until there are no longer first class
And second class citizens of any nation
Until the colour of a man’s skin
Is of no more significance than the colour of his eyes
Me say warThat until the basic human rights are equally
Guaranteed to all, without regard to race
Dis a warThat until that day
The dream of lasting peace, world citizenship
Rule of international morality
Will remain in but a fleeting illusion
To be persued, but never attained
Now everywhere is war, war”War, by Bob Marley
(Inspired by a Haile Selassie speech)Posted by JOS on from Chicago 05/11 at 09:55 AMRobert B. Livingston & JOS,
Not very eloquent of me, but…
“Right on.”
I’d like to think that if he were alive today, he’d be something close to the embodiement of all that is good about Rastafarianism. I’ve known a couple of people who called themselves such, (and they certainly had a greater capacity for smoking bud than anyone else I’ve ever met - almost scary!) but the rest of the philosophy seemed to go somewhat amiss with them. That said, no one’s perfect, but there should be no quarter where armed violence is concerned and it’s only too true that Jamaican violence escalated dramatically through the mid to late 80’s and beyond.
RMJ, I think Marley’d have been one of those with whom you’d wish to be surrounded.
As for my demands for justice, I’m currently demanding that Census Canada not contract with Lockheed Martin before I pander to the law requiring me to turn over my personal info.Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 05/11 at 12:41 PMHello Expendables. I can’t say I’m too surprised to learn that Mr. Marley has fans here. Thanks for all the lyrics, thoughts, etc. It’s especially sad to consider that Marley died just 5 months after John Lennon.
What I wasn’t expecting was a day of quotations but, thanks to RT starting things off, things are especially stimulating on this overcast Thursday. What a great mix of characters and comments so far.
I’ll be back soon…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 05/11 at 12:56 PMHellos and how-lows to Amelopsis, RMJ, Jeremy, JOS, and Robert B.
MZ - My comment above is a recitation of an old Chinese proverb that I learned while practicing ShaoLin (albeit many years ago). It’s very much related to the story of Master Han…
P.S. - I was so inspired by today’s post that I put my Babylon By Bus cd in the player today. Instantly put me in a good mood.
captcha = line (I don’t toe it)...
Posted by RT on from The Buyou City 05/11 at 02:15 PMBob Marley sounds good, Mickey! And so do you ..
‘Hi’ to RT, Robert B. Livingston, Jeremy, Amelopsis, Rosemarie and JOS. I hope you have a pleasant Thursday afternoon. Here in Daylesford it is 5:39 am on a Fridy afternoon, and it seems as if the sun might shine today. Time to do some weeding in the garden ..
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 05/11 at 02:40 PMAnd I love your quotation, Rosemarie!
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 05/11 at 02:42 PMHi Helga, RT, Mickey, JOS, Jeremy, and RBLivingston.
Amelopsis, Yes, I want to surround myself with Expendables. I stopped in at your site but something happened to my computer there. Must have been an error on my part. How’s it going with you?Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 05/11 at 02:59 PMWhere’s Mudge? The Yanks look like they might take 2 of 3 from Boston and there’s no one around to tease.
G’night, all...thanks again for the great conversation.
