The Ballad of Big Pri
The first World Cup I saw was the ‘82 tournament in Spain (recently liberated from 40 years of Franco dictatorship, also a coup attempt in ‘81) which was made memorable by Paolo Rossi’s feats, a player whose name is better lodged in my memory than that of just about any player before or since. Here’s a documentary on the Italy of yesteryear that I recently came across, very worthwhile…
Posted by sk on from 07/08 at 07:19 AMGrazie amico!!! Just one complaint: “Viva Italia” is uncorrect.
“Viva l’Italia” is correct, or “Forza Italia”, even if it’s the name of Berlusconi’s party…Hoping to trash away Moggi and Galliani.
Posted by Gianni on from 07/08 at 07:25 AMOops, this link to Rossi should work
Posted by sk on from 07/08 at 07:30 AMFrom last night, David #25… If you believe that there is freedom in the usa, you are talking to the wrong person. And when it comes to justice in the usa, there is less than zero. I have a lot of first hand knowledge on that topic. ///Please read all of William Blum’s writings. Below is what he says about ending terrorism.
“...As I’ve written elsewhere: If I were the president, I could stop terrorist attacks against the United States in a few days. Permanently. I would first apologize—very publicly and very sincerely—to all the widows and orphans, the impoverished and the tortured, and all the many millions of other victims of American imperialism. Then I would announce that America’s global military interventions have come to an end. I would then inform Israel that it is no longer the 51st state of the union but--oddly enough--a foreign country. Then I would reduce the military budget by at least 90% and use the savings to pay reparations to the victims and repair the damage from the many American bombings, invasions and sanctions. There would be enough money. One year of our military budget is equal to more than $20,000 per hour for every hour since Jesus Christ was born. That’s one year. That’s what I’d do on my first three days in the White House.
On the fourth day, I’d probably be assassinated.”
WILLIAM BLUMPosted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 07/08 at 07:31 AMHello Expendables.
Good to see you, SK, and thanks for the links. I’ve placed the video link into the main post when you click on “Forza Italia” (and thanks to Gianni for correcting my use of Italian).
RMJ: David is still responding on yesterday’s board. Let’s ask him to join us here so we can continue the discussion. You out there, David?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/08 at 07:37 AMDAVID… You say, “...To speak out in this Country doesn’t take any courage because we are a free country and we are not free just because we say we are. People long ago paid for that freedom that we enjoy today...”
I don’t even know where to begin to respond to that statement. One of the members of Veterans for Peace was just arrested recently because he was wearing a t-shirt that said, “veterans for peace”....probably that was a t-shirt similar to one worn by a supporter during my trial. The VFP person wearing that t-shirt had it covered with a jacket, BUT he was removed from the courtroom anyway until he took off his shirt. The problem was that it contained the word, “peace”.
I’m not a fan of country music, but I remind you of what happened when one of the Dixie Chicks said that she disagreed with the president, all hell broke loose. Anyone who speaks out in the usa has to be prepared for repercussions, not only from the government but also from fellow citizens. Too many in the usa do NOT believe in the right of freedom of speech and consider it their right to retaliate. I have seen high schools kids threatened with physical harm because they protested the war. Most people who speak out receive death threats. A question we often ask each other is, “How many death threats have you received recently?” I could go on and on. In the usa freedom, justice, and humanity are more myth than reality.
Yes, I know, if we didn’t fight the Revolutionary War we would probably be speaking English here.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 07/08 at 08:02 AMGood Morning, all.
RMJ
As Eliza Doolittle would say, ‘wouldn’t it be loverly’. Imagine, if all world leaders adopted the philosophy of William Blum.
Mikey
Enjoy so much reading your real life stories on Saturday mornings.

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 07/08 at 01:59 PMHi all...still getting set up in the new place, and lose the use of my brother’s car this afternoon so even trips to the liberry to use a computer are limited. Trying to get the ‘puter setup finalized before the Evil Day Dawns and I can’t write anything!!
Gurk. Moving SUCKS.
On the brighter side of “ick,” I actually HEAR from a few Expendables now that I’m not around. Should I just stay away, I wonder?
David, from last night: How I wish I could agree with “To speak out in this Country doesn’t take any courage because we are a free country” even though it’s demonstrably untrue. “...and we are not free just because we say we are” is certainly true, because the freedoms we once enjoyed are long gone. The USA PATRIOT Act saw to the dissolution of the few remaining guaranteed liberties we enjoyed. We’re no more free than citizens of more repressive places such as France or England.
You are defending a way of life now vanished, and I could not possibly be sadder to say anything I can imagine being able to defend saying.
captcha="lower" as in what’s happened to the standards of governance in the USA
Posted by Mudge on from Austin, hot hot Austin 07/08 at 02:14 PMHello Mudge. You’ve been missed.

Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 07/08 at 03:16 PMWell, I guess there are a lot of tired Expendables today...I worked 17 hours straight yesterday. Hello Mudge, James and all!
Posted by JOS on from my brother's apartment 07/08 at 03:38 PMHellos and howlows to all ye Expendables.
Been lurking today, as I’m trying to get stuff done around here.
Welcome back Mudge. The Expendable Machine hasn’t been running on all cyclinders without you.
MZ, dangling from a fourth story window? I’ve urinated out of a window that high, but geez....
Oh, and did I hear somebody say freedom of speech? Like when I got rounded up while peacefully protesting? Must be a different free speech than what I’m thinking of.
Posted by RT on from The Buyou City 07/08 at 04:54 PMOr, maybe as Utah Phillips sez: “The state can’t give you free speech, and the state can’t take it away. You’re born with it, like your eyes, like your ears. Freedom is something you assume, then you wait for someone to try to take it away. The degree to which you resist is the degree to which you are free...”
Posted by RT on from The Buyou City 07/08 at 05:39 PMOk so what’s a good viable solution to our problems? Can we make a difference with the upcoming elections? Are the Dems just as bad as the Republicans? I can see that you are really nice and level headed people. What kind of things can we do to make a real difference in our world?
Posted by David on from Louisville KY 07/08 at 10:35 PMHey David, it seems you keep catching us on the tail end of a day’s discussion. Any chance you can join in on Sunday’s board?
