Anarchism and the Parking Meter (poem)

Posted by Mickey Z on 07/27 at 04:12 AM
  1. Of course you know that it’s not the parking meters that are the problem, but the cars themselves…

No time to get into that now, though, just to thank you all for a lively discussion here yesterday which I couldn’t quite focus enough to take part in, as I was preparing myself for the interview that I am off to now. Best way to be a better global citizen will be to free myself of corporations like Discover Card, even if I’ll be working for one just as much so. So I’m collecting whammies now…

  2. Morning all… Yes, I think any light that can shine on Anarchism is a good thing. It is so misunderstood by so many. Anarchism needs a great big PR campaign but I must admit that I have lost all faith in all political movements, even the ones that are worthy of support. How can any political movement compete with bombs, rockets, drones, fighter planes, DU, an unlimited amount of money, and an uninformed populace?  This morning I received an e-mail from a friend in China. He calls it “lard ass syndrome”.

  3. Hugs to James on your quest.

  4. See, that’s why Mickey and I go on about the vegan thing-- no lard… Thanks!

  5. James good luck at the interview, don’t call anyone a lardass and I’m sure you’ll be in like Flynn! (or whoever!)

Good morning Rosemarie.  I agree, anarchism is woefully misunderstood.  I’m not entirely sure I understand it myself.

Mickey it doesn’t mention on the A-wiki that you once cleaned a meter’s clock. but I still like the poem and the wiki site. I think it might come in handy when grain of salt is needed to balance facts found elsewhere.

Yesterday our PM attended a Support Israel dinner.

I’d much rather watch Bruce Lee.

  7. should have said yesterday’s comments…

Bruce was amazing.  I saw a couple of minutes of a Green Hornet episode the other day.  How ridiculous was it that Bruce was that guy’s sidekick?

  8. How disingenous and ridiculous, this requirement for their appointed puppets to call Hezbollah members terrorists.

Israel hit a Hesbollah target yesterday.
It was a community centre which housed a daycare centre in a residential neighbourhood. Terrrrrrorists!

  9. Hi again-- yikes, pathetic and terrible all around, with world events, but my interview was so far so good. Will find out more next week. As to Wiki-like things, your timing is great, because I just saw this, and it’s an absolute riot:

  11. Good stuff James.

Captcha is getting to be as sarcastic as the Onion; it says “peace”.

  12. Simultyping, MZ.  I think those facts should come as an insert mailer to every taxpayer in the USA.

  13. Those who believe Wiki’s open-edit pollicy can maintain accuracy must also believe

    a) Israel is simply defending itself
    b) the U.S. wants to spread democracy
    c) a Democrat will turn things around in 2008
    d) etc. etc. etc.

Empress: I’ll buy the stamps if you provide the envelopes.

Captcha sez: “fire” (as in yelling in a crowded movie theater?)

  14. e) Narnia was one of the original US colonies

    f) Chuck Norris instigated the American Revolution and single-handedly defeated the British army. Man, that was one of the Onion’s best pieces lately.

Which reminds me, did Bruce Lee really lift Chuck Norris off the ground by his chest hair at the end of that big fight? That’s crazy.

  16. Ah yes, TM...The Last Dragon. When they were filming that here in NYC a zillion years ago, we in the martial arts community had a field day gossiping about how the star (Taimak, I believe) was not such a good fighter. In fact, my friend at the time, Jeff Ward, did a ltot of his stunt work. Every business has its politics...even grade B karate flicks.

  17. Getting harder to tell the satire from reality these days…

    Report: Everything Made In Sweatshops

    July 24, 2006 | Issue 42•30

NEW YORK—A new U.S. Department Of Labor study revealed that Martha Stewart Living housewares, Tommy Hilfiger clothing, iPod music players, forks, diapers, telephones, and every other conceivable consumer good in existence is manufactured by people laboring in sweatshop conditions. “Long hours, low wages, and unsafe work areas are involved in producing everything our civilization uses,” Labor Secretary Elaine Chao said at a press conference Tuesday. “It is now literally impossible for anyone anywhere in this country to purchase any single thing that doesn’t infringe on someone’s human rights.” Chao added that even the few items still made in the U.S., such as designer T-shirts and certain Toyota sedans, are also produced in deadly squalor, mostly by illegal immigrants. The Department of Labor recommended no immediate course of action in response to the report, which was compiled by 135 government employees in an 20-by-80-foot Quonset hut without air-conditioning working six 18-hour shifts a week for $1.15 an hour.

  18. The Israeli ‘Justice’ Minister:
He said that in order to prevent casualties among Israeli soldiers battling Hezbollah militants in southern Lebanon, villages should be flattened by the Israeli air force before ground troops moved in.

He added that Israel had given the civilians of southern Lebanon ample time to quit the area and therefore anyone still remaining there could be considered a Hezbollah supporter.

“All those now in south Lebanon are terrorists who are related in some way to Hezbollah,” Mr Ramon said.

Mickey, watching (and enjoying) the Bruce clip, I realised there was something you forgot in your “how to win a fight” series: have your enemies attack you one at a time and at convenient intervals (or - make your enemy fight on several fronts.)

  19. ‘Of course you know that it’s not the parking meters that are the problem, but the cars themselves…’
Spot-on, James!  And thanks for this really interesting post, Mickey - you do not cease to surprise me.

‘Hi’ to Rosemarie, Amelopsis, JOS, TM and Mew.  I have been joined in Daylesford by Mr Helga and our pooch Kelly for an extended weekend, so things are looking good.  The weather - not so good but at least not as cold as it was:  about 56 to 58F are forecast.

    Auf Wiederemailen ..

  20. All the best wishes go to you, James.

And re ‘Support Israel’, Amelopsis # 5:  our government in Australia repeats every platitude voiced by GWB and Condi, i.e. they are behind Israel unconditionally.  If Israel is the 51st state, Australia must surely be the 52nd ..

  21. oh, and thanks for fpif link, Mickey! A good question to which we all know the answer ..

  22. “All those now in south Lebanon are terrorists...” Even Tucker Carlson picked up on that outrageous statement. That is like GWB’ers saying that all of those in Gitmo are terrorists. When pressed to explain, the conversation goes like this. “Well we know they are terrorists because they are prisoners at Gitmo”.
I like my captcha word “anti”.  Let’s be anti everything.

  23. That’s just American logic, RMJ. Everyone in prison is a criminal. Why? Because they’re in prison, of course.

I do like the “anti” idea. As Groucho sang: I don’t know what you have to say/it makes no difference anyway/whatever it is, I’m against it

Hi Helga, Mew, and all other Expendables.

Posted by Mickey Z.  on  from Astoria 07/27  at  04:26 PM
  24. I like the Anti Everything notion too, providing I’m in the right mood and it’s a sentiment that comes to me naturally.

Completely OT, but I’m looking forward to this weekend: http://tinyurl.com/g6has
It’s my annual ‘henna hands’ outing so that when the work week begins anew everyone can feel awkward deciding whether or not to comment on my decorated hands smile

  26. I love this site and the expendables who frequent it.  This is not really related but knowing that the Z man is vegan (I am only brave enough for vegetarianism), I had to post this after hearing about it on CBC here in Halifax.  More vindication as if you needed it!

Sorry, don’t know how to use tinyurl yet (can someone email a quick lesson on how to do that?).  Looks like people with Type 2 diabetes may no longer need drugs at all!!!  Just follow an unrestricted but strict vegan diet according to the study.  Amazing!

    Chau for now

P.S.  captcha is “doubt” grin But this is a serious post.  Seriously.

  27. Hi to our new friend, Edson, from Nova Scotia. I have a friend here who bought a house and land in Nova Scotia so his family will have a safe place to go when the violence breaks out in the usa.

Odd facts....Elizabeth Dole has a new face.
Condi Rice is on the news playing the piano while Lebanon burns.
Cindy Sheehan is now the new neighbor of GWB in Crawford where she just bought an acre.

  28. Hello Edson...and welcome to the comment board. That diabetes articles does not surprise me. Holistic practitioners, for years, have said diabetes can be managed without drugs. In fact, my own mother (who has a ton of health issues and is not exactly a health maverick) was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about 2-3 years ago and has never taken a single medication for it. What is most telling is that doctors are amazed when they find out.

Anyway, hope to see more of you here.

    Hi RMJ.

Posted by Mickey Z.  on  from Astoria 07/27  at  06:58 PM
  29. Welcome, Edson. Unfortunately the link you put up, she’s a broke.  My interest is piqued though, so I might just seek it out directly.
(PS: As a fellow vegetarian & aspiring vegan...Ask James - he knows all about the egg substitutes and pretend cheese!)

Since you mention buying land in Nova Scotia, RMJ, I think that’s becoming a rather big issue in quite a few smaller communities there and in other Maritime Provinces.  Many generational landowners are having real problems paying their property taxes...CDN$500k+ per year when up until now they’ve lived like ‘regular’ people.  Landscape changes, part time residents drive up taxes but kill the local economy.  It’s extremely unfortunate.

    MZ, you got it, different.
