Both revolutionary and poetic powers

  1. Wouldn’t be nice if there were any new mainstream rock and rollers out today that used their art to get a radical message out?

  2. Anti-Flag a re a political punk rock band. They’re not very mainstream, but they are on a major label. And they’ve been around for about a decade.

  3. Interesting...thanks Kirbie, I’ll check them out.

    OK, here’s a question.

    Where the hell is everybody???

  4. Two quick things, fellow Expendables:

    1) I saw Patti Smith in a small venue ten or twelve years ago, and she shook me to the core of my being.  I was in the middle of a 7 year stretch working in an independent record store, and I probably took in an average of three shows a week during that time.  NO ONE had the presence that Patti did.  She spent more time talking than rocking… but it made the rocking that much more powerful, at least in her case.  I was disappointed in her participation in Kerry’s campaign, but she possesses a level of authenticity and integrity (i.e., she is human and never lets us forget it) that keeps her in my good graces always.  We need more like her.

    2) Just noticing Mickey’s post yesterday, where he took Ward Churchill’s notorious quote and turned it into a poem (yes!)... and I’m currently, right this second, listening to Ward talk on an hour-long call-in show at KGNU, Boulder’s community-owned radio station.  He remains a hero to me and many—the man is righteous in ways that most could never imagine.  The problem is, he’s dealing with an army of self-important little men (and women) moral turds who can’t handle the mirror he’s holding up to them—so they seek to take him down.  They never learn.  And he’ll be just fine, no matter what.

    My two “cent"s....

  5. Wow - that’s quite a photo of Patti Smith there, Mickey!  Thanks for another enlightening post - that really woke me up at 5:30 am local time.  I have a bit of a cold but it is not too bad - I might have ‘nipped’ it in the bud with some medication.

And ‘hi’ to JOS, Kirby and Hawk.  Take care, all of you.

  6. Hello Expendables...and welcome, Kirbie. It’s beyond hot here in Dubya Land.

I second JOS’ query: where is everyone?

  7. Btw, can everyone see the YouTube videos? They don’t always seem visible to me.

  8. Youtube is down for me. Says they are working on the site.

  10. Hello Uncle Joe and Keir. I’m a big fan of Eqbal Ahmad. I even went to his memorial here in NYC when he passed away in 1999 (I think). I got to hang out with Edward Said and David Barsamian.

  11. Mickey—I never got to hang out with Edward Said, but David Barsamian is a fixture in Boulder.  Unless he’s on the road or recording a show at KGNU, he can be found at either a sidewalk table outside the Laughing Goat Cafe or the Trident Cafe and Bookseller, his face in a book.  I always say “Hi David,” and he always looks at me like, “Do I know you?”

Regarding the relative scarcity of commentors here, I wonder if everyone figures you’re lost in Texas and unavailable to Blogtopia until you get back...?  I thought that, before clicking your link on a whim this morning.

  12. You guys are so lucky, with your brushes with celebrity. All I have to report is that I was on the same checkout line at Whole Foods one day last year with Uma Thurman, and man, she looked to be about 8 feet tall, simply radiant and for real and--

okay, not sure with of us are the lucky ones. Wasn’t this much of a fan til that day. As for me and here, it really stinks not being able to comment or view much at my new job. I should complain to the NYCLU.

  13. I tried to make it clear that my mom has a computer now and I’d be around, as captcha sez, “daily.”

Oh well...I’m happy to see the folks who stopped by today.
