Nukes: Iran & North Korea are not the problem (and much more)
Congratulations Amelopsis on another year ‘round the sun.
Right on today’s topic I found this short article by Joe Bageant this morning. Very interesting indeed.
Frst time “Hillary” and “hero” appear in a sentence togther, huh?
What about “Clinton” and “deep throat” . . . ?Posted by Keir on from The Hague (Jackowski election hdqts) 10/18 at 06:13 AMShengri kwai le, Amelopsis!
Posted by Jeremy on from Taipei 10/18 at 06:26 AMA VERY, VERY, VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ONE OF THE ANGELS HERE !!!!!!!! Tell us how you plan to celebrate, Amelopsis.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 10/18 at 07:15 AMGood morning Keir and Jeremy.
The Bageant article is a good one that all should read.
And Mickey has another good article. You ask who are the real rogues here. I have noticed how many times the news readers on the electronic media use the term “rogue” to refer to N Korea. It is just a subtle reference but it is exactly those subtle references, when repeated over and over again, that bend the minds of the listeners. No one ever objects. No one ever brings up the point that it is the usa that has used nuclear weapons to kill civilians. No one cares.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 10/18 at 07:29 AMGood morning and thank you for all your birthday wishes! If it does turn out to be Rapturous, I’ll make sure no one gets left below, ok?
No big celebration plans here, a nice meal and a quiet night at home is all the excitement I need. (boring, eh?)
“Rice launches Korea crisis tour” is the bbc’s web headline this morning...will there be lots of swag? T-shirts, autographed posters, that kind of thing? And so Japan is gingerly suggesting they should have these weapons...with Condi giving ‘diplomatic hugs’ to assure them that they needn’t do anything so extreme.
AAARRGG!!! It’s like the NON was taken out and they all signed a PROLIFERATION treaty.
Bastards.oh...and on this day in history: Pierre Elliot Trudeau was born. He wasn’t perfect, but in a relative world, I’d be content enough if we could have him as PM today. I’d like to see him give GWB the finger.
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 10/18 at 07:58 AMHello Expendables...it’s gonna be more than 70 degrees here today. Gotta love it.
Empress: You’re right, rapturous was odd choice of words. I’ve changed it to awe-inspiring. I’m very glad to have lured you to my humble (sic) blog. Enjoy your day.
Captcha sez: story (but it’s not Saturday)
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/18 at 08:33 AMEmpress don’t get too bent out of shape about the BBC. This pile of low-grade reporting typifies everything wrong with what people in the US consider quality journalism. And have yourself a holiday from the computer. It’s your birthday.
Posted by Keir on from The Hague (Jackowski election hdqts) 10/18 at 08:33 AMKeir I suppose the UK doesn’t mind reporting that particular legalisation of barbary in such a trite way because they’ve acquired immunity for their own citizens ... something Canada has not even bothered to ask for yet.
And - I’m stuck at the computer for most the day anyway...coming here is the holiday part of it ;)
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 10/18 at 09:20 AM....and listening to ‘the Best of Phoebe Snow’ while I’m at it is nice too.
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 10/18 at 09:22 AMHappy birthday, Amelopsis!
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 10/18 at 09:31 AMGood morning all.
My best wishes, Amelopsis, for a happy & healthy birthday. What you have planned seems just right to me.
I agree with your assessment of Pierre Elliot Trudeau. When he went to work as a lawyer, here in Montreal, my daughter frequently ran into him on his walk back & forth from his office to his home. His charisma was just as strong then as it was when he was Prime Minister. My only hope re our current leader is that, if he cannot give Bush the finger, at the very least, he does’t become his lap dog.
Posted by Canadian Observer on from 10/18 at 09:42 AMHi Canadian Observer,
Thanks for the good wishes.
Yes, by all accounts Pierre was compelling individual in and out of the public eye. Too bad we don’t have anyone who displays similar passion for the country - just those who like the trappings that lip service provides.
I’m quite certain that Harper had his sights set on being lap dog long before he became PM...he started his grooming schedule long before his campaign kicked into gear.
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 10/18 at 10:19 AMoops…
Thanks JOS!
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 10/18 at 10:22 AMHi JOS, Keir, Mickey, and Canadian Observer
Along the lines being discussed here...what about the 65 Senators and 253 Representatives who votes for this “let’s-continue-the-torture-bill”. They are the ones who should be impeached and Tried for war crimes.

Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 10/18 at 12:03 PMHello again, gang. Here’s a fun response to the nukes article today:
YAY for USA and dropping the nuke on Hiroshima!! It ended the war and saved countless AMERICAN LIVES!! You hate your country and should be shot you filthy fucking traitor!! When a nuke goes off in this country thanks to Iran or N. Korean help, scum like you will be rounded up and dealt with accordingly and I for one will be there cheering your demise. NOW MOVE TO FRANCE AND GET THE #### OUT OF MY COUNTRY!!
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/18 at 02:21 PMAh, the very epitome of the spirit of democracy - USA style.
(and what an original thinker)
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 10/18 at 02:48 PMMickey # 16...I think that your e-mailer represents a widely held view...no one knows how widely held that view is, but I believe that those folks could someday present a substantial threat, maybe even more so than the government. What a sick time and place this is.
As a candidate, I get a lot of questionairs, surveys, etc from all kinds of groups. The Anti-nuke group sent one that was very easy for me to fill out. I am struggling with the one from the gun owners association. My views there go up and down, especially when I think about those among us who are ready to blow anyone away who they don’t agree with. Today I am thinking that self-defense is a virtue.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 10/18 at 03:24 PMGreat Condolizard interview Mick.
That’s the most truth I’ve heard out of her since….forever.And indeed many happy returns to the mighty Panther Princess Empress Amelopsis,
long may she reign!A quirky love “poem” for my Empress…
(look, I just made it up at this moment so don’t go thinking I can’t write “real” poems all you artistic bastards!)Underground Love Affair
I want to take you to an underground shelter
Past Illuminati aliens and their helter skelter
We would poison them all on the way by
making them choke on their cold vicious liesThe underground world be our domain exclusive
Although we two would not stay reclusive
We would then, with great efforts and at great pains
round up the animals, at least those who remain
make broad based agreements with goo-covered fish
and bring them below if only they wishThen once at the centre of this hollow planet
I’ll sing you a song as we light up the granite
a nuclear purging, a madman’s dreams
cleansing the Earth of all men and machinesWe’ll show the wee beasties how to bury their poo
(It would be a thing that we’d have to do)
Teach the Lions to sing and the monkeys to dance
We’ll call our new homeland “Indgermanadafrance”.Posted by Youngfox on from hillsofhell 10/18 at 03:46 PMThanks you, ‘Freak-Fox’.
Honestly all this Expendable fussing and good wishing has made me smile a lot today.
Thanks, everyone

Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 10/18 at 03:52 PMYAY for USA and dropping the nuke on Hiroshima!! It ended the war and saved countless AMERICAN LIVES!!
Mickey,
The following quote, from one of the hosts of the ‘Blogs for Bush’, which I posted here on another occasion shows that the view expressed by that e-mailer may be a belief held by more people than you think.
“an American soldier is intrinsically much more valuable than his enemy; whomever that turns out to be - and not just in an existential, “I’m and American and thus I care” sense; a US soldier is the moral acme of the United States - in microcosm, each one of them is the United States personified. An enemy soldier is just a bit of foolish cannon-fodder launched against his betters by very unthinking and cruel men. One of ours lost is like 1,000 of theirs lost.”
-Mark Noonan, April 7, 2004Posted by Canadian Observer on from 10/18 at 03:55 PMHello all. You know, when I woke up this morning, I wasn’t expecting to read these two sentences in close proximity:
“We’ll show the wee beasties how to bury their poo.”
“A US soldier is the moral acme of the United States.”Btw, I replied to my e-mailer (see #16) and may have won him over. More details soon.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/18 at 04:10 PMDid you EVER expect to read “we’ll show the wee beasties how to bury their poo”???
At least I know that a post-apocalyptic life could have it’s up side.
looking forward to you revealing how you could turn around that emailer…

bellsMany, many happy returns of the day, dear Amelopsis. Sorry I’m late to the party, but it was a hectic day. I would never ignore such an auspicious occasion.
Posted by Mudge on from Austin, Texas 10/18 at 07:25 PMHello Mudge.
I was hoping to hear back one more time from my new friend but nothing yet. So, here’s how it went. Someone sent me the e-mail posted in comment #16 above. My reply: “Want some freedom fries?”
He answered: “Good one.” (He was disarmed)
Me: “Yeah, even a filthy fucking traitor has his moments.”
From there, he replied and apologized for being so harsh...explaining that he feared North Korea or Iran selling nukes to Islamic terrorists. He also declared that “we” only used nukes once, during WWII.
I told him that yes, it’s not impossible that more countries have nuclear weapons could result in such weapons being used in terror attacks but I also explained that th U.S. (as detailed in the article) continues to use nuclear weapons today.
He hasn’t replied yet...but hey, it didn’t take much to bring the hostility down a few notches.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 10/18 at 08:30 PMAmelopsis! Happy Birthday, and pardon my delay. I always enjoy reading your posts about all the goings on up there and do peruse your garden more often than I mention. Best wishes from all three of us, as I use this chance to try out my image posting skills again… might as well do this at the end of the page here anyway-- see you later!
