A different kind of occupation: 37 years ago today

Posted by Mickey Z on 11/20 at 05:20 AM
  1. A smashing pair of articles to kick off the week.

I visited Alcatraz and remember a fine quote from one of the occupiers, to the effect of “the US government shouldn’t mind the occupation, as it mimics the land always given to Native Americans: there is no fresh water, one cannot farm here, and it does not support game.” I’ve checked the net for the quote and can’t find it.

Jeff Monson is also an inspiration. I can only imagine the pulse rate of the Praetorians who questioned him; not exactly pushing around some teens in the ghetto or covering for the dalliances of high officials. I’m occasionally interested in learning a martial art (a horror to “respectable” leftists) but couldn’t find a place without a huge American flag on the wall. The bowing and scraping I can do without, too. MZ, if you can advise on this, let me know.

So what are the lessons today, childrens? Direct action and self-defense have a place in this world. Liberal posers need not apply.

  2. Hello Expendables...from chilly NYC.

Great to have you here on a regular basis, Zen. As someone outside the respectable Left (or respectable anything), I urge you you to follow through on your martial quest. In terms of finding a school to match your needs, that can take time..but it’s worth the wait and the effort. It’s really an individual school thing as opposed to style thing.

  3. Great article as always… but I wonder if the odd imagery on the site today drove away more commenters so far...?

  4. James: Do you think they’re scared or in awe?

  6. Possibly dismay… but man, the NYPost is awesome. What a day so far; see you later.

  7. Thanks for reminding your expendables of all those historical events, Mickey!

And ‘hi’, Zenprole and James.  Where are all the others?  Getting ready for Thanksgiving, Helga suspects.

We are expecting temperatures around the 100F range today and it is not even summer yet!  Global warming indeed.

  8. quote from the robin hood article:

“I think I may have stepped on a kid,” said Gabriella Horn, 26, a student at Parsons, “and a poor one at that.”

    now...did someone really say that?

The next time I see three Englishmen dressed in tights I am going to teach them how kind New Yorkers can be!

  9. Re: global warming: I’m reading “Field Notes From A Catastrophe” by Elizabeth Kolbert. Expanded from some New Yorker articles, it isn’t a strenuous read, but effectively captures the experience of being out on the front lines of hard climate science - Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, etc.

I’ve watched the climate and environment change in Eastern Massachusetts over the last 25 years, so don’t need a guide on this topic. “We’re fucked!” is an understatement (or, truthfully, our descendants).

These captca words are uncanny: ‘include’ for this message on world climate.

  13. Great stuff today, Mickey. It’s always a pleasure to read about individuals who go beyond our professional prison and take part in the combat for social justice.

  14. Holy Fertilizer! This Axis of Justice radio is the real thing. Just when you think the last tooth has been pulled from dissent...thanks, ultrafknbd.

Tom Morello was on Real Time with Bill Maher last Friday night. It was amusing to see Dana Priest try to defend the corporate media against his illuminations. I think Morello consciously decided not to gut her on live TV, but I could see it in his eyes. Bill Maher also suprised me with some of his observations… he ranges from contemptible liberal to sharp libertarian. The latter is much more entertaining, and vital.

Captcha sez “against.” Count me in.

  15. Just checking in to say hello to Fiona and to say I think I’ll start scouting around for video of the Morello clip Zenprole just mentioned.

Not sure, but I might have caught sight of you and Seth at one point.

  17. Yeah, that’s me. I tried hard to avoid the cameras so I wouldn’t look like a money grubbing lunatic but someone asked me what I got and I said: “4 bucks.” Now, it’s all over the Web.

    Oh well…
