“Fast Food Nation” makes headlines
I think I might have always misunderstood Fast Food Nation, and was never really motivated to read it. This backlash against it is really unfortunate, but the book and movie are still a missed opportunity, right? I mean they don’t really argue against animal product consumption, right? Just doing so at fast food restaurants… so it’s just a bad situation all around. And I guess that Derrick Jensen would point out that it’s not going to get any better anytime soon.

Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 11/22 at 08:05 AMHello Expendables. There’s a chill in the NYC air today.
James: Fast Food Nation could be a small step toward examining the standard Americna diet but, as demonstrated by today’s post, it stands much less of a chance if the media trivializes its message.
Caprcha sez: could. I say: yeah, right.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 11/22 at 10:27 AMthat’s fucking horrible about the chicks…
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 11/22 at 10:27 AMTip of the proverbial iceberg, JOS.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 11/22 at 10:29 AMright...here are some hard stats on the impossibility of our way of life, in the “greatest city,” of the wealthiest country in the world...1 in 6 go to bed hungry:
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 11/22 at 10:45 AMJOS: I read about that on the subway this morning. We truly live in the land of opportunity.

http://tinyurl.com/y2ur2aPosted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 11/22 at 01:46 PMHiya, Expendables. It’s cold and dark at 5PM in Eastern Massachusetts.
I’m so glad to learn about Abolitionist-Online. Seeing PETA’s liberal stance exposed and confronted is truly heart-warming. Newkirk and Friedrich have been a laughing stock since the mid-90’s, but the cachet of celebrity participation has shielded them from serious competition. And Derrick Jensen f00kin’ rulez!
For the record, I’m a partial vegetarian whose diet has improved dramatically over the last decade. I’ve learned a lot about the sharp end of animal welfare through the Earth First! Journal, but still maintain that the treatment of animals is merely a reflection of how humans treat one another. Not an excuse for inaction, but also a warning against warm and cuddly attitudes toward wild spaces and critters. Give me Ed Abbey and Dave Foreman over PETA any day.
Re: Fast Food Nation: Sure, there wasn’t anything dramatically new in the book, but Schlosser put it all in one place and it took off like a shot, reaching a huge audience: good. I remember reading Business Week at the gym when McDonalds posted its first ever quarterly loss. FFN had been at the top of BW’s own bestseller list for *months*, yet the author of the article on McDeath couldn’t pin down why the loss. DOH!
Degree in Homeland Security? I want to see a masters in White Collar Crime surface somewhere.
Captcha sez ‘usually.’ I say ‘sometimes.’
Posted by Zenprole on from Urth 11/22 at 05:24 PMWhat a harrowing post, Mickey - especially for someone like me who still likes eating meat. I hope you don’t condemn me too much - we already get our eggs from the local market and they come from hens who can roam around, or so we are told.
Hello, my expendables James, JOS and Zenprole.
Happy Thanksgiving!Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 11/22 at 05:58 PMThe director of the movie was a guest on the Colbert Report the other day. After he very briefly explained the McDeath system Colbert said something like it can’t be bad because they make “HAPPY” Meals. So if what you are saying is true they would call it “Bad” Meals or “Inhuman” meals.
Posted by Fiona on from san diego 11/22 at 06:27 PMHello again, everyone.
Helga, I’m not condemning you (or anyone). I’m supplying info and hoping it inspires others to make changes.
Hey Zen. If you haven’t read Jensen’s Endgame, I’d like to suggest you check it out.
Hi Fiona. How about SAD meal? As in Standard American diet.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 11/22 at 06:46 PMJust so y’all know: the Party for Animal Rights won two seats in yesterdays parliamentary elections in The Netherlands, a first in Europe (and perhaps the world?). And if that’s not enough, the Socialist Party came in third, edging to fourth place the odious anti-immigrant VVD. If anyone is curious: there were 21 individual political parties on the ballot yesterday.
Posted by Keir on from The Gray Hague 11/23 at 06:27 AMThanks, Keir. It sounds to me like The Netherlands should be invading the U.S. to help spread democracy.
