William S. Burroughs: A Thanksgiving Prayer

Posted by Mickey Z on 11/23 at 07:07 AM
  1. I found a great pocketbook of Burroughs in Rome with a really nice Italian translation for only one unit of fat-controller currency - the first piece was the Thanksgiving Prayer, next time I´m back at the house I´ll post it.

  2. while I was there I found a Bukowski in Italian too, a collection of poems wriiten two years or so fore he died. This was one, if I remember well:

    safe poetry
    and safe people
    last only
    long enough
    to die safely.

  3. Happy Tofurky Day to all. Today I am especially thankful for all of my “family” here at Mickey’s. We all are really a very unique group of Expendables. There is not another site on the Web that can compare to Mickey’s.
Yesterday the Vt Supreme Court ruled on the Appeal of my conviction for protesting the war. In a 3 to 2 decision my conviction has been overturned. I have not been found innocent but the judge has been found guilty of judicial error. That means that now the government has to decide whether or not to retry me. The link to the legal document is here for Jeremy and anyone else interested in the legal ruling. My view on the legal system is unchanged but I am very happy about this ruling from the court.

  4. Hi Owen...we were symultyping. I made a mistake and sent the link to the Boston Globe article instead of the legal document. I have been up all night and am not very alert today.

  5. Hello my fellow Expendables. It’s rainy, damp, and all-around nasty in Astoria today.

Great stuff, Owen. Any day that begins with Burroughs and Buk is off to a good start, if you ask me.

RMJ: Your news has truly made my day. I realize it’s not definitive but let’s all take a moment to appreciate Rosemarie’s relentless pursuit of justice.

Michele and I will soon be sitting in traffic on our way to see her parents on Long Island. Ah, the insanity of holidays…

Anyway, I’ll check back here later.

  6. Happy Holidays, Expendables. I’m off to Kate’s on Avenue B for Thanksgiving tofu, etc. with my mom. Sometimes having so little family in this country is works out for the best. Now for a Thanksgiving themed message, I’ve always like this. Mickey’s referred to political message in the 5th verse, but the whole thing is great:

  7. Great post on the occasion of Thanksgiving, Mickey!  I have already let several American friends know .. I hope you and you, Owen, Rosemarie and James, have a good day anyway.  I have heard several Australians rave about their visits to the US arond Thanksgiving - it must be a very special day.

It is sunny in Daylesford but not too warm - 76F or so.  Perfect!  Tomorrow the State of Victoria holds state elections - I hope the Australian Labor Party is returned.  Am such a ‘lesser evil’ person.

Have a good weekend, all of you!

  9. Thanks go out to MZ and all the Expendables. What was I thinking of, not spending more e-time here???

Hadn’t seen Burroughs’ “A Thanksgiving Prayer” until about five years ago, and it blew my socks off. My favorite line is “Thanks for a nation of finks.” I’ve got several of his CD’s, and believe his spoken word archive could form the keynote and several twisted planks for a new constitutional convention.

MZ: Aye, I’ve read Jensen’s “Endgame” and couldn’t put it down. I think I read both volumes in about 6 days.

Captcha sez “you.” I say “us.”

  10. Hello James, Helga, Zenprole, and all others lurking or yet to arrive. Long day for us...and it’s still pouring rain. Ahead lie Michele’s “birthday weekend.”

Zen: I’m really glad to have you join us here. Please feel free to spread the word and bring along some kindred spirits.
