This Xmas, say no to fir (plus: our caption winner)
morning all (well evening here)
good article mickey, it is weird being here this year where christmas passes by in a blaze of indifference.
it is good to get rid of (at least one kind of) the corporate crap for one year, but i think i will miss the days off. only one day off here
boo
Posted by michael on from exile 12/01 at 10:01 AMGood morning, Expendables. It might hit 70 degrees here today but temperatures should drop considerably by tomorrow.
Michael: I was under the impression that there’s a decent sized Christian population in Korea and thus, Xmas might be a big deal.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/01 at 10:04 AMchristian popultion is about 40% i think. but i have not seen any lights or various other paraphernalia and nonsense anywhere yet. at home they start putting things up at the end of november - which is sickening
Posted by michael on from exile 12/01 at 10:07 AMi meant at the start of november
Posted by michael on from exile 12/01 at 10:08 AMAround here, they puts up loudspeakers and pipe in Xmas music on a particular busy (read: shopping) street. It starts before Thanksgiving. In a word, it’s awful.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/01 at 10:15 AMwhen is thanksgiving? we don’t do that where i come from
Posted by michael on from exile 12/01 at 10:36 AMMy vote for line of the day, so far: “This Christmas, say no to fir...”
I haven’t had an Xmas tree since I lived in Seattle, WA. The mess, and my cats puking up pine needles, were only part of the deal. When living in the PNW, I saw clearcuts for the first time. They look like battlefields, which they are: unnatural quiet and the stumps like corpses. When I even bother, Xmas decorations are now a red bow over a threshold, framed by whatever cards I get. (BTW, the cats still make a mess of these.)
Bravo to Omar for winning the Caption Contest. If you haven’t yet heard Robt Fisk, you’re in for a treat.
It’s raining in MA today, and we’re still struggling to achieve early fall temperatures. I can remember times Halloween was colder than this… A particle of good news is that my parsley is still growing.
Book Plug Dept: “The Earth Moved” by Amy Stewart, about earthworms. A surprising find, informative and useful.
Captcha sez ‘property.’ I say ‘improperty.’
Posted by Zenprole on from Urth 12/01 at 11:20 AMIf only Mel Gibson weren’t such a scumbag (and I felt that way before the drunken tirade) I would be actually be enthused about seeing his new one. It looks like a great “anti-civ” movie (I use this term for lack of a better one, please, no rants today about Luddism and hating technology). I may hold my nose when buying the ticket and go see it anyway.
Posted by Brian on from Belly of the Beast 12/01 at 11:22 AMMichael, in the US Thanksgiving is observed on the fourth Thursday of November (in Canada, the second Monday in October).
Posted by Zenprole on from Urth 12/01 at 11:27 AMI’m with you Brian…
As for Mel, I look at him and other Hollywood types and never get bothered by what they say. I judge a movie by its own merit...if we immediately boycotted all movies made by shallow morons would there be any left to see?
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 12/01 at 11:27 AMYeah, we are on the same level JOS. For some reason I felt a need to explain myself there. I have had this argument before, esp. concerning Woody Allen, whose movies I am a huge fan of, even some of his recent ones. Or listening to James Brown, reading Hemingway, or whatever. By the logic of certain people, we should not support those who are bad in their personal lives. I feel, if we take that logic to its conclusion, it would be NECESSARY to research the tabloids before making a decision to watch a movie, listen to music, or look at a painting, etc. Its bullshit, and a little fascist as well.
Posted by Brian on from Belly of the Beast 12/01 at 11:43 AMagreed…
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 12/01 at 12:34 PMBrian, is today Woody Allen’s birthday?
Congratulations, Omar. Yes, Robert Fisk is one of the really good guys.
Hi JOS, Zenprole, michael, and Mickey. This year I am also trying to forget about Christmas. At the end of my street, on the side of the mountain, there is a large Christmas tree farm. I can’t avoid seeing it every time I go outside. One Christmas, a few years ago, I went to a nursing home and spent the day with people who would have otherwise been all alone. It was so sad to see so many people who had been discarded that at one point a few tears welled up in my eyes. I will never forget that the blind man that I was visiting at that time said, “There are tears in your eyes now.” I still don’t know how he knew that. I will never forget that blind man and the Christmas that I spent with him.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 12/01 at 01:17 PMthat’s a beautiful story, RMJ…
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 12/01 at 02:08 PMDid somebody say Christmas?
Captcha asks me “which?” and I regret I don’t have a link for Christmas in America’s urban ghettos, Christmas in Gaza and the West Bank, Christmas in the townships of South Africa etc etc etc…
Posted by Keir on from The Gray Hague 12/01 at 03:46 PMBut Christmas practically equals fir, Mickey - in my country of birth, Germany, at least. However, since coming to Australia, I have learnt to live without it.
And congratulations, Omar - that really IS a great caption.
Time to say ‘bye’ to Mickey, Michael, Zenprole, Brian, JOS and Rosemarie - but only for 4 days or so. I’m off to Canberra, our national capital, with my husband - back in Daylesford next Wednesday/Tuesday in the US.
Have a great weekend.
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 12/01 at 03:47 PMHello again. I am woefully behind here...so I’ll need some time to catch up. For now, I’d like to say that Michele and I saw a bargain matinee of The Queen today. A very well-acted movie that demonstrates the power of class interests.
More soon…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/01 at 04:08 PMmy aunt saw that the other day, Mick. She agreed that it was well done…
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 12/01 at 05:04 PMA sad movie all around, JOS. The way Tony Blair cynically aligns himself with the establishment. The way the public blindly worshipped Diana. The life of a Queen totally out of touch with reality. Still, I’d recommend it for the acting and for the inside look at the monarchy.
As for Mel Gibson, for what it’s worth: a friend of mine is a stunt man and has worked with him. He says Gibson is very likeable, a real practical joker, and he tends to hang with the crew more than the stars.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 12/01 at 05:09 PMThis is my son’s first xmas. I will begin to pass my traditions to him. We put up a pine tree every year...we plant it in the yard, not the house.
peace…
