"Totally mad, frustrated, angry, and hateful"
Just catching up from last night’s comments…
David...I believe that the usa gives less in foreign aid than any other industrialized nation. If you think that the usa is the great benevolent big brother please read “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” by John Perkins, also “War is a Racket” by Gen Smedley Butler. The fact is that much of the money in the usa goes to paying for 6000 bases in 130 countries, please read Chalmers Johnson.Deb...about water. Many people do not have access to municipal water supplies and for many the water coming out of the tap is so bad that those in-line filters do no good. In many small towns across the usa, who gets town water is a political/economic decision made by the town fathers. I just spent almost $1000 for a water softener just to prevent further damage to the pipes and furnace...still can’t drink the water.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 12/29 at 09:49 AMHey everyone… been a busy past week for me but I’ve enjoyed the comments here too. Anyone know much about the NYC water? I’ve been drinking it all my life and I’m still here, but people often say that it’s bad stuff, at least because it has fluoride in it. I guess there’s no point in buying fluoride-free toothpaste if the stuff’s in the water, too! But I just hate the idea of paying for water… agh.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 12/29 at 09:57 AMthe thing with bottled water is that it is regulated less than tap water...and I am sure the regulations for tap water are pretty liberal.
I think NYC tap water is the best I’ve had...Chicago ain’t so bad either. I’ve heard running the tap for 20 seconds or so gives you pretty much the same end product as a filter. Don’t know if that’s true or not…
I love the Bukowski quote and I am proud to say I have many periods in my life when I have done absolutely nothing...including having any deep thoughts.
I am also proud to say that a poem of mine will be published at Concrete Meat Press in the near future:

Heaven
I once canoed to James Bay
and left everything
I had behind.I ate cold beans
from a tin can
and tasted every spoonful.I slept with my
head rested on
a wooden seatand awoke to
the Aurora
Borealis.The tide had
gone out and
I lay therewithout
thinking.Posted by JOS on from Chicago 12/29 at 11:33 AMHello to all and well done JOS! I hope you get plenty of positive feedback for the poem.
Re today’s post, Buck is right, as usual. It is essential for human well being to go through periods of life without doing very much. I think this is one reason why having kids can be so detrimental to the mental health of parents.
That is going to be my New Year’s resolution: do more nothing.
Love to all the Expendables.

Posted by JOS on from Chicago 12/29 at 02:46 PMCharles Bukowski is right, Mickey! And well done indeed, JOS.
Greetings also to Rosemarie and James (welcome back!) from a warm Daylesford. Water shapes up as a real issue down under, Rosemarie. Here is a very interesting interview re media and war:

Have a good weekend, all of you expendables, wherever you are.Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 12/29 at 03:00 PMThe water I drank as a child from the kitchen faucet in Prince Edward Island was ice cold and crystal clear. Don’t know if that is still the case, but to me it was better than any pop or artificially-flavored drink around. Day or night, with the turn of a lever, fresh tasting nectar. Wonderful!
Hope y’all enjoyed the holidays.
Posted by Canadian Observer on from 12/29 at 03:13 PMhaha we keep pingponging back and forth related Bukowski and Henry Miller quotes. Here´s today´s one from HM:
“The life of a creator is not the only life nor perhaps the most interesting which a man leads. There is a time for play and a time for work, a time for creation and a time for lying fallow. And there is a time, glorious too in its own way, when one scarcely exists, when one is a complete void. I mean--when boredom seems the very stuff of life.”
Posted by owen on from back in schmarcelona 12/29 at 04:37 PMJames, if fluoride was your concern you´d want to stop bathing in the water too as it enters the bloodstream quicker through the skin. I buy drinking water here because the tapwater is undrinkable and gives me a furry mouth (besides the fluoride).
Rosemarie, your friend was pretty spot-on with his reply ytesterday.
Posted by owen on from back in schmarcelona 12/29 at 04:41 PMHi everyone...lots of good comments here. I’ll never catch up with all of them. The news is focusing on the coming execution. Well at least the flags are already at half mast. He is being hung for the deaths of approx 180. Who will pay for the deaths of 650,000 + ?
About fluoride...a few years ago, I attended a lecture by Paul Connett. He was one of the most impressive and convincing speakers I have ever heard. His position is completely against adding it to drinking water. He presented a lot of scientific data...bone cancer in boys, loss of IQ, etc.
http://www.apfn.org/apfn/flouride.htmThere is fluoride in food, tea, and other things we consume. Interesting is how the campaign to put fluoride in drinking water came about.
My captcha word is “peace”. I hope that that is a good sign.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 12/29 at 07:13 PMGot a nice smile from watching the Harold and Maude clip!
About water:
“In San Francisco where tap water is safe, healthy, plentiful, and virtually free-- many still prefer expensive branded bottled water. I wish some of these feckless city employees could read P. Sainath’s article and get a better idea of how precious water really is."http://tinyurl.com/yao3tt
More fun from youtube purgatory:
http://tinyurl.com/y2og4lPosted by Robert B. Livingston on from San Francisco, California 12/29 at 08:12 PMFluoride is the only chemical added to water supplies with the intention of treating the water drinker and not the water. Modern science shows fluoridation is ineffective at reducing tooth decay, harmful to health and a waste of your taxes. What to do?
Write and call your legislators. Tell them you want it out. A turn of the spigot is all it takes and the political will to buck the American Dental Association who uses fluoridation to increase their political viability. If people truly believe organized dentistry endorses fluoridation because they care about your dental health, just try to get a dentist to treat your cavities for free when you don’t have the money. 80% of them won’t even treat Medicaid patients.
