Are you a health nut?
I may or may not be a health nut, but I’m probably some kind of nut-- I have indeed adopted/rescued my 3rd cat. Late last night, she made her auspicious debut into my palacial manhattan apartment. Her name is Sonja, so far. She loves me and the apt., but my other two little monsters are a little slower in coming around to her. They either ignore her or hiss at her, the little bastards. I’m almost afraid to go to sleep or leave the house, for fear that they’ll gang up on her.
I’ll do what I can for all of them, and post a photo of us once I’m sure I know how w/o making it take up half the site here. As for health and longevity, from the NYT, hmm:

Posted by JOS on from Chicago 01/04 at 09:38 AMover here in españa, we spar wif jamones de teruel, lighter weight, but real good fer speed work, ¿sabes?
Posted by gizzard on from españa 01/04 at 10:34 AMHealth nuttery I leave to those more interested in fuel than pleasure when it comes to food.
I have an interview for a great gig with health bennies and everything nice like full-time schedule, like a savings plan, like a boss who’s a hottie, and a strong recommnedation that makes being hired a pretty sure thing. Friday, 1/5/07, at 10am CST. Prayers...oops, kind wishes and good energy, forgot what crowd I was addressing!...much appreciated.
Helga, from last night: howdy, glad to see you’re still here too!
CatLady, now really. Another cat. It’s antagonized all the important men in your life! Roddy’s pissed, Frank’s hissed, and me...well, I am just ghastlied. Hmmph.
Hi JOS! How’s life in ChiTown?
Posted by Mudge on from Austin, Texas 01/04 at 11:19 AMMudge! Glad to see you back and my prayers and good energy are going out for you…
ChiTown is excellent. I believe I have finally found a home...did I ever tell you that I have moved every 2-4 years (many times to other countries) since I turned 11?
My family has made this move work for me...I am lucky in that my extended family has a lot of very cool people in it.
I am getting a little worried though...it’s 50 degrees today, on Jan. 4th...in Chicago.
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 01/04 at 11:36 AMOkay, all who haven’t should now trot on over to MZ’s interview with Mike Palecek. The occasion for the interview is publication of his new novel, The American Dream, which he wrote because:
“...I wrote the book to fight. To fight against this culture I live in, to fight Bush, to fight the “support the troops” mantra. Even as I envision a “good” future for my children, and even as I sit right now in relative comfort in the middle of America, I see America as an enemy, the America of my neighbors, my extended family. I see George W. Bush as an enemy. I fight now against America, not because I believe in any other country or ideology, but because I believe in working for the poor, for peace.”

Really. Read this, it’s a beautiful thing to be in touch with such a clear-sighted mind.
Posted by Mudge on from Austin, Texas 01/04 at 11:43 AMHello Expendables...from warm NYC. Like Chicago, JOS, we are enjoying weather that should be freaking out everyone in sight.
I see Cat Lady is, uh, being Cat Lady.
Gizzard: Care to elaborate?
Mudge: You are scooping me on my own site. The Paleck interview will be posted here by Monday...but I guess there’s no harm in a sneak preview. Anyway, mucho good luck with the interview. Please keep us informed. And remember: Some food is both fuel and pleasure.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 01/04 at 11:48 AMHey JOS! It’s 50 in Chicago today?! It was 53 here, 1000+ miles south, yesterday!! What does it all mean, one wonders....
Moving every 2-4 years. Ugh. I got rid of 50+ boxes of books when I lost the house last January, and I still have thousands. Moving them every 2-4 years gives me fantods.
My roommate has caused me to regress into youth. I’ve agreed to join a D&D group he’s running, playing a game based on George RR Martin’s novel A Game of Thrones. I didn’t even play D&D when I WAS young, and now, at 47, I get suckered into it. What happened to me?
Posted by Mudge on from Austin, Texas 01/04 at 11:49 AMAre you sure it isn’t a B&D group, Mudge?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 01/04 at 11:50 AMMZ, sorry for the scoop action, I was just so excited by the whole thing. Forgive me?
And yes, some food is both fuel and pleasure: prime rib, for an excellent example, and of course factory-farmed chicken. Yum!
Posted by Mudge on from Austin, Texas 01/04 at 11:52 AMI’m so tired, I’m afraid to take my eyes off these three for too long, that the native two will tear her apart or something, but I guess the worst they’re doing is ignoring her and hissing at her once in awhile.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 01/04 at 11:58 AMB&D is only fun with those who can offer informed consent, MZ, and a bunch of 19-yr-olds ain’t where it’s at for ol’ Master Mudge. I mean, really, what’s the pleasure in beating a bunch of kids? I’d’ve had my own if that’s what I wanted to do.
--->OF COURSE<--- everyone should realize this is but a jest.
I liked A Game of Thrones when I read it, so wondered what it would be like to create a character that would fit into that mythos and cause it to act and interact with others in that mythos, wihtout having to do a bunch of tedious writing to fill in background and so forth.
I shall inform the assembled as soon as I know what results from the interview.
Posted by Mudge on from Austin, Texas 01/04 at 11:59 AMI have to admit I was a D&D player in my youth...not hardcore, but I enjoyed it.
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 01/04 at 12:39 PMsobering words, mickey. just when i’m starting to think i’m going crazy, i find the last paragraph in the article soothing. i’ve gone vegeterian this year. i tried to go vegan, but that is gonna have to wait a little. going vegeterian is pretty easy though. anyone who wants to should definitely give it a shot. it’s not as hard as people think it is.
Posted by ruben on from 01/04 at 03:04 PMmore good news on the environment (sarcasm drips between the two o’s in “good"):
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 01/04 at 04:30 PMJOS: You can’t pull the wool over my ice. There’s no such thing as global warming.
Hey Ruben...long time, no see.
