He put a cigarette in his mouth and kinda like stared at me
Good morning to all MZ’ers… The big Peace March will not do much good. I think WC calls events like this the politics of convenience. He’s right. If it did any good, they would not allow it. I plan to go to the small gathering here. It is bitter cold and I don’t know how long I will last. I go to see my friends but I know that it will not accomplish anything in the anti-war effort.
I don’t have a story but I have some questions. Please scroll down and notice the photo also.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 01/27 at 08:25 AMGood morning, RMJ...and all Expendables and guests.
Housing, like food yesterday, is a touchy subject. Most folks will get upset at RMJ’s question and say they work hard and have every right to buy a house or three. I can understand such a sentiment but, for me, it effectively illustrates our alienation and isolation as a society. We’re so disconnected from those in need (until our own worlds come crashing down). Success lies not in helping others but in accumulating goods and letting others know about it. This essentially exposes capitalism—and libertarianism, for that matter—for what they are.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 01/27 at 09:43 AMlike Jensen says...the marching will work, and we should send pink bubbles of love to the President as well to change his heart to goodness.
Morning RMJ, Mick...I’m tired of marching and hoping...I want to raise some hell.
Posted by JOS on from Oak Park 01/27 at 09:58 AMHey JOS...as you well know, Ward Churchill sez:
“What I want is for civilization to stop killing my people’s children. If that can be accomplished peacefully, I will be glad. If signing a petition will get those in power to stop killing Indian children, I will put my name at the top of the list. If marching in a protest will do it, I’ll walk as far as you want. If holding a candle will do it, I’ll hold two. If singing protest songs will do it, I’ll sing whatever songs you want me to sing. If living simply will do it, I will live extremely simply. If voting will do it, I’ll vote. But all of those things are allowed by those in power, and none of those things will ever stop those in power from killing Indian children. They never have, and they never will. Given that my people’s children are being killed, you have no grounds to complain about whatever means I use to protect the lives of my people’s children. And I will do whatever it takes.”Captcha sez: theory
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 01/27 at 10:45 AMright...and in addition, I can’t say it any better than the quote I posted from FD the other day:
Men may not get all they pay for in this world; but they must certainly pay for all they get. If we ever get free from the oppressions and wrongs heaped upon us, we must pay for their removal. We must do this by labor, by suffering, by sacrifice, and if needs be, by our lives and the lives of others.

Posted by JOS on from Oak Park 01/27 at 11:35 AMwith regard to the march… i think i annoyed someone i didnt mean to by leaving a message on their blog
the blog entry was encouraging people to call their representatives and get them to come on the march with them. my comment was…
nice idea but if any of them came what banner are they going to carry????
maybe you could print some up for them. i think it should go like this…“DOWN WITH ME AND EVERYTHING I STAND FOR”
Posted by michael on from exile 01/27 at 01:11 PMHi everyone!
Great Article RMJ! I’ve often thought that a lottery would be a much better way to get an “elected” government. It would at least be a great motivator for a well educated and nurtured populace.
Peace and love,
LunaPosted by Luna_C on from the Delta 01/27 at 01:14 PMHello again, everyone. Welcome, Michael and Luna. My friend Nick Mamatas has a slogan I think many here will relate to:
I mock your value system
Now there’s an all-purpose protest banner for ya…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 01/27 at 02:17 PMHello Mickey, RMJ, Michael, JOS, Luna…
Mickey I agree, eavesdropping on conversations in public places is usually disappointing. Every so often I get a pleasant surprise, but it’s not often enough.
RMJ, I think your questions are like, totally, you know, relevant, and furthermore have some pretty obvious answers too; those answers/solutions will in all likelyhood never come to fruition. Mostly because, like you know, government sucks.
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 01/27 at 02:55 PMHi Luna, Michael,JOS and Amelopsis
I, and others stood out in the cold with our signs. I used the time to discuss the connection between Capitalism and Wars. I wanted to make the point that protesting THIS war without addressing the root of the problem was kind of lame. I think I might have annoyed some of the people there.
Mickey #4...thanks for that one. You made my day.
I have a friend who keeps telling me that I need to see the movie...Kurt Vonegutt’s, Harold Bergoeron. (I am not spelling it right.) Why do you think he tells me that?
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 01/27 at 04:09 PMRMJ, I’m not sure which Vonnegut book you’re referring to.
From the NY Times website:
Demonstrators listened to speeches from a roster of politicians and entertainment figures including the Rev. Jesse Jackson; Representative Dennis J. Kucinich, Democrat of Ohio and a candidate for the presidency in 2008; and Representative Maxine Waters, Democrat of California. The actors Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins also addressed the crowd.
What...were Patti Smith and Sean Penn not available?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 01/27 at 08:42 PMGood morning, Mickey (I’ve overheard similarly banal conversations on trams and trains - often conducted on mobile phones), Rosemarie, JOS, Michael, Luna_C and Amelopsis.
‘The big Peace March will not do much good.’ I’m afraid you are quite right, Rosemarie! The DC peace march was actually reported on our public broadcaster but in a condescending way. That was followed by GWB’s comment that as commander-in-chief he can do whatever he likes .. Darker times ahead!
And although we are in the middle of summer in Australia, temperatures dropped so much on the weekend that we had to put the heating on. Extreme weather.
Bye, expendables. Take care, all of you.
