Adolf loved his liver dumplings
Morning all.
Great article, Mickey. I had heard the hitler-as-vegetarian myth, and heard that it was false, but I hadn’t seen the information that would debunk it.
The NYtimes might be changing their ways though. Did you see the vegan cupcake article? http://tinyurl.com/25ngyy
I think vegan cupcakes should take over the world. Maybe I’ll vote for Isa for president. She has vision! And cupcakes.
captcha says “north”. Not sure if it means NYC, the vegan wonderland, or if it is giving me a somewhat stronger hint?
Posted by Deb on from NoVa 01/31 at 07:16 AMMorning Deb...morning Mick.
That video is fucking horrible but not at all surprising. It’s great to get a bunch of backwards-ass people with guns out on the streets of Iraq to capture “the hearts and minds” of Iraqis...isn’t it?
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 01/31 at 09:47 AMYo. Nice link Deb. Don’t hold your breath on NYT changing its ways though.
My girlfriend makes kick-ass vegan cupcakes. I live for them.
I’m all for veganism but in my order of priorities for what I eat and wear etc is naturally, harmlessly, and sustainably produced goods (when possible). For that reason I’ll often go for protein via dairy and eggs over soya products.
MZ I’m skipping the video right now but I will say that it’s good to see you at Daily Kos, hope you can wrench some minds open over there. Belittling vegetarians because of Hitler’s diet makes about as much sense as belittling people with facial hair because he had it too. It’s also funny how some people consider anyone who doesn’t eat red meat three times a day “vegetarians”.
Posted by Keir on from the hague 01/31 at 10:17 AMMichael Moore is giving dietary advice? what a crazy world. I´m going to file his suggestions along with those of the 280-pound Latina checkout girl who sniffed at my muesli as “bird food”.
Posted by owen on from sea turtle massage parlour 01/31 at 11:01 AMI see you lead over at Brickburner today Mickey… another good article. http://tinyurl.com/229neu
Lately I have become interested in Peter Dale Scott’s idea of Deep Politics which examines why factual knowledge is so easily dismissed by conventional prejudices.

Having been a failed street artist I am very sensitive about the fact that Hitler was likewise… however, from what I understand he was essentially a copier-- cranking out sterile landscapes for tourists. Not to put myself on a pedestal, I always saw art as a way to relate to others-- my joy was painting portraits… and my goal was to explore the human essence of my subjects and to connect with them (very difficult for me because I am very reserved and introverted). It has always been said that the world would have been a better place had Hitler remained an artist or been an architect. At times I felt happiest and most free as an artist. The experience definitely helped expand my political education-- mostly it showed me how fragile and all-too-often artificial are the constructs which we use to define our world.
Erich Fromm wrote quite a deal about the difference between the Necrophilic and Biophilic personalities which I think are useful descriptions. The ultimate question is “Do you love life?” I think that it should apply to every endeavor no matter how romantic or pedestrian. It is not really an easy question to ask of oneself, but we should never stop asking.
Now, if Condoleeza Rice would just play piano....
Posted by Robert B. Livingston on from San Francisco, California 01/31 at 12:13 PMHello Expendables. Nice to see you all. We had ice and snow on the ground here this morning but it’s warmed up a bit now.
Deb: Yep, I saw that cupcake article...but I agree with Keir, re: the NYT changing its ways.
Hey JOS and Keir.
Robert: You’ve scooped me on that article. I have so many articles up that I can’t get them posted here quickly enough. Tomorrow and Friday will feature my two most recent pieces...including the one Robert linked to.
As for Daily Kos, the regulars there are (somewhat) tolerant of a relatively benign piece like Hitler-not-a-veggie. Wait till you see the rabid comments I got today. I’ll post the link by Friday as Exhibit A that liberals/Democrats can be more rigid than their “neo-con” enemies.
Chalk it up as reason #85,491 why we start virtually no chance of ever turning this mess around.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 01/31 at 01:12 PMSorry, Owen...I missed your funny comment.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 01/31 at 02:48 PMIt always strikes me how defensive and seemingly offended people get when the conversation touches on the fact that I do not consume flesh for sustenance.
Some demand reasons for my choice as though a debate has suddenly been entered into even though I display no interest in castigating or “converting” them for their choices.
I find it kind of amusing that you bother with “Daily Kos”.
The groupthink and censorship of views outside of the “Democrats are the way toward a brighter future” crowd are a bit much for my sensibilities.
When the oft abused term “Left gatekeeper” is bandied about the Kos is one of the first websites that comes to mind.
There are so-many “non-celebrity” blogs/websites on the “interweb” that are so much more objective and edifying.
(and the crush of advertising on that site and other “liberal” blogs is just eye bleeding).
Advertising something you wrote or created is fine and often informative but who the hell shops from blog sidebars?Oh, I meant to ask you Mick is the Infoshop website dead or I am I just unable to link through from my location?
Posted by Youngfox on from entrophyland 01/31 at 04:58 PMHitler was indeed a vegetarian - that much I knew, Mickey. I think he was also against smoking but seems to have been addicted to various other drugs, if memory serves.
And re Bill Blum: all his books are great (regarding Rosemarie’s and James’ comments on the previous thread).
Good morning/afternoon, Deb, JOS, Keir, Owen, Robert B. Livingston and Youngfox - from a Daylesford which is warming up.
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 01/31 at 05:21 PMI dunno, Helga, I think Adolf liked the meat.
Yo Youngfox, I’m pretty sure Infoshop will be back up in a matter of days. As for Kos, can I plead temporary insanity?
