Hell, high water & corporate profit
I wish I had sound here at work.
Good morning, Mick. Great topic today…
Where is everybody? Don’t tell me we are going through an Expendable lull.

Posted by JOS on from Chicago 02/01 at 10:59 AMGo Bears.
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 02/01 at 11:00 AM9 out of 10 scienticians agree that hell will soon freeze over and it’s high water mark is right about at the equator.
(bit of a lull for me lately...lurking whenever possible, never too far for too long though)
JOS, you mean this bear: http://tinyurl.com/35jzpa
right? ;)
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 02/01 at 11:35 AMHello JOS, Empress, all Expendables and guests...from a cold but nice NYC. I think snow is on its way tonight.
Yeah, it seems lullish around here. It happens…
As for the “big game,” I think it’s a great match-up, JOS. If Manning’s thumb is okay and he can deal with the pressure (on and off the field), I might lean toward picking the Colts to win.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/01 at 12:15 PMI love the spirit bear, Amelopsis!
I also love the 2007 version of these Bears:

I know. It’s silly...but I have to say that this city and it’s people have really won me over. Of course, I was here in 1986 when the Bears one last time so I have an excuse for rooting for these guys.
They love this team. I have a feeling the Bears are going to kick some Colts butt!

Posted by JOS on from Chicago 02/01 at 12:19 PMOh Mick...don’t believe the hype! All the experts are picking the Colts...and yes, Manning is a great quarterback...but in every other category, the Bears are better...Hester is going to break either a kick off or punt, the Bears D is going to force several turnovers...and get to the QB (which is very hard to do, I know)...Jones and Benson are going to run it down their throats...which will open it up for poor Rex to throw one deep.
Ok, that’s it...that’s my sports rant for the day.
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 02/01 at 12:31 PMhmm… Colts, you say. Here’s a less pleasant story that’s ongoing: http://tinyurl.com/272wdo
(can you tell I’m not much for following the sports?)
Chicago’s a nice place as far as I recall, although it’s been well over a decade now. But damn, it’s as windy as Ottawa!
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 02/01 at 12:34 PMDamn those purchase thingys…
Sorry - the story I was reading is the fourth link on this page: http://tinyurl.com/ysaz2l
(why it’s available one way and not another, I don’t understand)
Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 02/01 at 12:36 PMSorry for my enforced absence. Things get out of hand sometimes.
The IPCC report is the political football du jour, but here’s my take: understanding the way bureaucracies work (especially G or NGO) and the fact that the climate science of 30 years ago was highly accurate and soft-pedaled its findings, leads me to this conclusion: the IPCC and UN are saying that within 10 years major climate changes will happen. This really means five years, which in turn means that within three we’ll start seeing the irreversible results of including imaginary corporate friends in the human species. (Other species overpopulate, foul their nests, etc., but this evolutionary mistake in the human brain is unique in nature.)
If I had any good news to add, even a snide witticism, it would appear here. No, wait… Florida is going to disappear under the ocean waves, as will large parts of Texas and Cape Cod. Captcha sez ‘effects.’
JOS I haven’t been following football this year, and I’m really a baseball fan, but I expect a good game on Sunday (which will constitute about 12% of the total broadcast). I would like to see Manning and the Colts win, if only because they have been on the short end of the Patriots’ fine run (sort of like the Utah Jazz and the Bulls years ago). But I also don’t know diddly about the Bears squad this year. I also saw that Prince will be the halftime diversion; why don’t they just wheel out Frank Sinatra’s corpse?
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 02/01 at 12:58 PMLate Note: it’s a shame about Molly Ivins. Didn’t care much for her liberalism, but her turn of phrase was often priceless.
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 02/01 at 01:24 PMHi everyone. Zen, I too am a bit sad about Molly.
About global warming. I think that Capitalism will have to go first. The piecemeal approach being used by the liberals is like treating an accident victim for a scratch on his forehead while ignoring his broken neck.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 02/01 at 02:20 PMEvening all,
One of Molly’s pricelessly turned phrases, courtesy of Counterpunch:
“During World War I parades of patriots used to go around kicking dachshunds on the grounds that they were German dogs. But you’ll notice people like that never kick German Shepherds.”Posted by Mew on from london 02/01 at 05:39 PMHello all...only have a second. I haven’’r read much Ivins but maybe I should. Only 62 years old? Damn…

http://tinyurl.com/3yq6okPosted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/01 at 06:07 PMThanks for the Ivins quote, Mew. Those words need to be punted around inboxes a few times, broadcast style. I’m on it.
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 02/01 at 07:13 PMSelected Molly Ivins Quotations
• The first rule of holes: when you’re in one, stop digging.
• What you need is sustained outrage...there’s far too much unthinking respect given to authority.
• Satire is traditionally the weapon of the powerless against the powerful.
• You can’t ignore politics, no matter how much you’d like to. Politics is not a picture on a wall or a television sitcom that you can decide you don’t much care for.
• It is possible to read the history of this country as one long struggle to extend the liberties established in our Constitution to everyone in America.Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/01 at 07:25 PMThanks for the Molly quotes. I have been thinking about the cause of her death and how it ties in with the toxins in the environment. Tonight’s news ran a story about how boy babies are affected by “oils” (pseudo-estrogens) in the soaps and lotions that their well-intentioned mothers use on them, something about lavender and tea tree oils. The point is that consumers have been being conned for a long time. I have in the past suggested that mothers use olive oil if necessary for their babies skin. A lot of new mothers disagree with me. Sorry to be venting. Today has been a sad day all around.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 02/01 at 08:10 PMHi Mickey, Amelo, Zen, Mew, JOS and last but not least RMJ
I’ve been off to a work sponsored DiSC management seminar all day. I feel boxed and tired. :(
Zen I feel your very on target with your take on bureaucracies. By all indications we’re globally boned. Even if we halted all emissions tomorrow. It’s very likely that global warming is out of control and we’re in for a very rough ride until the planet can stabilize itself again, If possible.
Ugh I mentioned last week how I watched “Who killed the Electric Car” the other night I watched “Inconvenient Truth”. Between the two movies I’m left reeling from the short-sighted pettiness of the people in charge of the oil industry and the States. It’s truly psychopathic. What can people do against such hate? By any means necessary against that, just comes to mutual destruction, doesn’t it?
Don’t mean to rant, it’s been a long life. What made us so lucky to live in such a unique time and place anyways? ;)
Take care everyone, lots of love,
LunaPosted by Luna_C on from the Delta 02/01 at 09:22 PMYes, RMJ, a sad day for sure. Lately, sadness seems epidemic.
Luna, I love this:

Unfortunately, our PM John Howard only recently ‘discovered’ global warming and any measures taken by his government are not to harm economic growth. Does that sound familiar?
And Molly Ivins has died - how come the good always die far too young? I bet George W. is going to live to a ripe old age.
From Daylesford where things are warming up yet again, greetings to my fellow expendables JOS, Amelopsis, Zen Prole, Rosemarie, Mew and Luna_C. Stay warm, where you are - here it is a matter of staying cool.
Amelopsis #7 and JOS: I’m sure Chicago simply cannot be as windy as Wellington, New Zealand - have never been to Chicago, though. Hope to be able to visit THAT ‘windy city’ one day.
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 02/01 at 10:12 PMAnd a ‘thank you’ from me as well for those Molly Ivins quotes, Mickey. You really have a knack for quotes in general.
Posted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 02/01 at 10:18 PMAlthough I enjoyed the warm weather back in December and early January I knew deep down it wasn’t supposed to be that way. When I was a kid Kentucky was always really cold by that time. We had plenty of time off from school due to snow. The kids haven’t had a snow day for a few years now and we finally got a dusting of snow last night. Something is definitly happening with the weather but it still remains the 800 lb gorilla in the room as far as talking about it goes.
Peace everyone!
