  3. I remember my elementary school days when Valentines was for people without partners and you had to send people anonymous cards then they had to figure out who they know that might be in love with them.

How did it become this corporate adveristing fuelled chocolate and gift fest with the kind of repercussions Mickey wrote about in this blog.

We took a stroll in Chang Feng Park here and watched live animals freely going about their business. Beautiful day here today too.

  4. Something furry that isn’t depressing/angering.

  5. Morning David, michael, Andy and Mew,
happy VD to all of you.

And to all the Expendables yet to come,
    a happy holiday to everyone.

    Or something like that…

Great G.K. Chesterton quote.  Something that could be said for all life on this planet.

  6. Milan Kundera says:

“Mankind’s true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it.”

    William McDonnough says:

“How do we love all of the children of all of the species for all time?”

And I got a question: with so many calling it VD, I was wondering how many of you have read The Vagina Monologues and what y’all thought. Love to all Expendables.

  7. UNICEF’s report on the treatment of children in the industrialised countries. Man, I’d hate to live in the only country that ranked below the US. Um, yeah.

  8. Hello Expendables...from a snowy, slushy, windy NYC. The first real taste of winter in 2007.

    Great comments above...and I love Mew’s link.

Here’s something you might wanna check on during the day. It’s too, too precious:

  10. Yeah, my second link sucked smile
Kind of OT, theres a family of foxes that live around my train station. What is (no disrepect to the foxes, who are brilliant) a fairly pathetic local wildlife nevertheless cheers me up enormously whenever I see them. Just seeing something, anything, in London that doesn’t exist for Mankind Inc is nearly tearjerking.

  11. Happy VD everyone. I couldn’t get out my front door this morning - it was iced shut. Luckily I have a back door, which was not iced shut. It took me an hour to unpark my truck (and most of the rest of my kitty litter) after which I realized I was insane, that I actually hate my job, so I reparked and went back to bed. Hopefully it won’t take so long to unpark tomorrow morning, because as fun as today has been, I don’t want to use up all my vaction time!

I got 2 letters from prisoners I keep in touch with, and I have to say, they give me more hope for humanity than most of my coworkers. Some of the most thoughtful and well-read people in my life are the ones I keep in touch with who are behind bars. Wasn’t it Howard Zinn who said he always started with the assumption that all the wrong people are in prison and all the wrong people out of it?

I don’t know if anyone else has seen Earthlings. I don’t think I will ever get the image of the skinned fox out of my mind, huge eyes blinking in uncomprehending pain afterwards.

Keir, I haven’t read the vagina monologues. Something else to add to my list, perhaps.

    Nora is adorable!

  12. Hi Deb. Glad you got to stay home today. Like you, I have not seen the V-Monologues.

  13. Greetings, all.  Don’t worry, Mickey.  Your post at Daily Kos remains untouched by a thoughtful debate of any kind.  They are still trying to determine if Michael Moore deserves to be on your list.  Basically feeding on themselves over there.

We have an animal-centric household here.  A cat, a dog, and a toddler.  My wife loses her mind over any animal abuse.  I’ve seen her curse like a sailor and threaten physical violence. She’s so cute when she frothes at the mouth!

Valentine’s Day is a crock.  My wife doesn’t think so, however.  Ouch.

Mew, being a Superpower is only skin deep.  That Unicef report and others like it expose the ugly underbelly of the United States.  And I have a young son. Double ouch.

Deb, I made my wife stay home from work because of the dreadful roads here in MD.  Fortunately it’s my weekend, so I could spend over an hour shoveling without a care in the world.  Really ouch.

  14. Gruesome, Mickey!  There once was a campaign against making and wearing fur, wasn’t there?  It seems to have petered out ..

Warm greetings go to David, Michael, Andy, Mew, JOS, Keir, Deb and Cart from a quite warm Daylesford.  I am a big sleepy at the moment although I have had almost 8 hours’ sleep last night - is a bit puzzling.  Still .. I’d have to be VERY sleepy to miss out on my almost daily visits to Mickey’s great blog.

    Take care, all of you.

  15. The sun is shining now after a rather large dumping of snow over the past 2 days.
Just want to say ‘thanks Mickey’ for posting on this today of all days.  It’s among the most vapid creations we’ve managed to hold onto strickly in the name of vanity...the fur coat.

And Happy Day to all you Expendables...everyday is a good day to say I Love You...who needs a hallmark holiday to validate the sentiment!

  16. Yup, Mickey, I could feel the love over at DKos.

    Happy V-Day all!

  17. Hey Cart and Dr. B. I think one comment out of 48 at Kos actually addressed (somewhat) the topic.

Helga: The fight against fur continues.

    Empress: xoxoxoxoxoxoxo

  18. this is entirely self-absorbed, but I just re-read and realised that I typed “strickly” when i meant “strictly”; the mind does strange things and apparently goes into phoenetics mode after being in front of a computer for too many hours!

  19. Speaking of Kos, this is about as honest an expression of what Democrats really want as anything I’ve ever seen.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/2/13/234519/589

They want the war to go on and they are TERRIFIED of a revived anti-war movement.

The only thing that might save the Republicans is the kind of actual social unrest that causes a law and order backlash.  But right now, I’m not seeing it.  Instead, I see Hillary ‘Muskie’ Clinton heading blindly into a buzzsaw that is going to chew her, and anyone that is replaying 1972 in their minds, into little bitty pitiful pieces.

Yes it’s insane. They don’t have a clue about the long term effects of the war but this is how they’re thinking.

  22. Good catch on that other DKos diary. I suppose if one is a sufficient glutton for punishment, there’s more of the same over at Booman Tribune.

  23. And remember, the Booman Tribune was started by people who were too far to the left for the Daily Kos.

  26. As a white male, I would like to thank Kathleen Parker for feeling my pain. The oppression inflicted on the likes of the white male community by the likes of Eve Ensler has indeed been horrible and it goes back to the passage in the Constitution which only counts white male penises as 3/5s the size of black penises. We’ve been making up for the slight ever since by killing as many people as possible.

  27. Thanks...I’ll start posting stuff at Booman ASAP.

  28. I’ve not seen/read the vagina monlogues, but I’m already highly biased in their favour after reading that stupid column.
