Cool girls, cold hands, frozen snails, and drooling Vaudevillians
I wonder when Cool Girl figured out that they’re for eating?
Good morning Mickey and I hope that you and Michele have a good visit with your Mom. I wish her the best.
Elsewhere in the world, other American travel plans are causing some well deserved ruckuss:
http://tinyurl.com/2mw664Posted by Amelopsis on from Canada 02/17 at 09:36 AMHello Expendables. Another cold one in NYC.
Thanks for the good wishes, Empress. As for Cool Girl™, I guess on some level she already knows those snails are for eatin’. Let’s hope she one day opts to decline such fare.

Happy Chinese New YearMy regards to Michele and your mom, MZ.
Posted by Jeremy on from Taipei, Taiwan 02/17 at 12:01 PMThanks, Jeremy. Year of the Pig, huh?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/17 at 12:06 PMHi Amelopsis and Jeremy...Happy New Year.
Mickey...it won’t be the same here without you but I promise that all of us will behave. Have a good trip and give your Mom hugs from all of us. Happy Birthday and good health to her !!!Scott Ritter spoke near here on Thursday. He said, “...we’re going to war with Iran. It’s going to happen. There’s nothing we can do to stop it......We’re seeing how Congress behaves. It’s not going to stop the war.....Two aircraft carrier groups have been moved into the region, and 2 more will be there by April. The Pentagon has negotiated basing rights in Romania and Bulgaria.....the people of the United States are wallowing in ignorance....”
I believe that Ritter is just one of many who say that it is a done deal. What are we going to do about it? The time for peace vigils and anti-war protests is long past. It is time for a new strategy.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 02/17 at 01:50 PMThanks, RMJ. I’ll be checking in and (I hope) making a post or two from Texas.
As for Iran, it’s part of how things are done now. The two corporate parties say all the things they’re scripted to say and then the slaughter begins with the corporate media serving as cheerleaders. This time around, I fear retaliation with manifest itself much closer to home. You’d think that might serve to get the population wondering if their gov’t is wrong. Nah, it’ll have most Americans clamoring for a stronger gov’t to protect them from terrorists and that means more repression of civil liberties.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/17 at 02:00 PMSad to say that you are right, Mickey. We need a million Mickeys, and a million, Amelopsiss, and a million Jeremeys. I just received this e-mail from a veteran. Some, like him “get it”. It was his answer to another vet who did not understand why some of us do not rally around the war monuments. We have allowed killers to be portrayed as heroes. There are too few William Arkins, Ward Churchills, Bill Blums. And too few people who are willing to stand up in their defense when they are under attacked for speaking the truth.
“War is murder. Why honor murderers? I will not honor that which makes
murder and war possible. Liberals want and have had it both ways. They
want to condemn war and then honor or commemorate that which makes war.
With the recent resolution passed in Congress against the escalation in
Iraq, the Democrats now have it both ways, again. Those who oppose war
should shed the G.W. Bush complex: not taking responsibility. Those who
kill are killers no matter what the cause, or what the flag, or what the
religion, or what the reason. If as, Pelosi says, we honor all those
that have done what we have asked them to do, then, she, and we, have
honored their killing in our name and by our request. I will not.” from a vetPosted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 02/17 at 02:21 PMI don’t know, RMJ-- it might take a little less than a million Naders. He’s gotta be worth ten regular men at least! Yes, I saw Unreasonable Man last night , and oh good lord! Brilliant and depressing in a good way at least. I’m at kind of a loss at the moment. Was a q&a session with the director, fascinating woman.
It did a good job of trying to present both sides, but had a hard time, because creeps like M. Moore declined to appear. Plenty of Alterman, though, oh man what a creep. Is it okay to call him a creep, or does that sink to Daily Kos level? Just… agh. I could go on and on.
I’ll let you know if Ghost Rider measures up.
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 02/17 at 02:53 PMWith his brains and talents, Nader could’ve easily chosen the easy path of wealth and “success.” Instead, he chose a life of service and his accomplishments are far too numerous to list here. Even with those who insist on blaming him for Bush, the good Ralph done far outweighs that alleged bad.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/17 at 05:25 PMWhen I think of the word “Statesman”, I think of Nader. The others are “politicians”.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 02/17 at 07:07 PMI hope you’re wrong about Iran. I fear you’re not.
Mickey, I hope you have a safe trip to Texas and that your Mom will be ok.
I just got back from working at the National Farm & Machinery Show for 4 days. I am whipped after speaking to Farmers and smelling Dip and watching them spit it in their cups and bottles.
I hope everyone has a good evening!

Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/17 at 09:50 PMBest wishes from down under as well for your and Michele’s upcoming visit to Texas, Mickey! And I hope everything goes well for your Mum.
No story from me - it is almost 104F in Daylesford and seeing I carry more than a few extra kilos, even sitting in front of a computer brings out the sweat. And the heat seems to turn all those grey cells into mush ..
‘Hi’ to Amelopsis, Jeremy, Rosemarie, James and David. Have a good Saturday night and Sunday!
Auf Wiederemailen,
HelgaPosted by Helga Fremlin on from Daylesford, Australia 02/17 at 10:49 PMYear of the Pig, that’s right.
Out with the old, in with the new. So some ass throws his pets out of his car, a dog and a cat. The cat gets run over immediately. The dog gets picked up by a caring individual who already has a bunch of former strays, can’t take another one. So we’ve got it for the time being. It’s a beautiful, gentle dog. It’s inconcievable to me that someone could just throw such a dog out of their car and leave it to its fate.
It’s literally an “out with the old” thing, I think. Perhaps its owners had a bad year. Blame the dog. Yes, get rid of that dog and things will be better. It’s stupid superstition. And probably a bit of a reality check. A retreiver is such a cute little puppy. But retreivers grow into pretty good sized dogs. I speculate the reasons, but no matter what, it’s friggin’ inhumane to just throw it out like that.
About what Scott Ritter says, I fear that unfortunately I happen to agree. That was the subject of my latest article a few days ago:
Posted by Jeremy on from Taipei, Taiwan 02/17 at 11:33 PMIn other news, another criminal who beat the rap and died a “free man”. The irony will not be lost on those warehoused in Huntsville, near where you’re headed, Mickey. I noticed this museum last time I drove through there, maybe I’ll visit it next time…
Posted by sk on from 02/18 at 12:35 AMGood morning, Expendables. Getting ready to leave soon...but I wanted to stop by and say hello to SK (a prison museum?) and Jeremy (good luck with the dog) and to remind everyone to not use the word “scrotum” around here, okay?
Thanks…
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 02/18 at 07:25 AMHave a safe trip, MZ. A prison museum in Texas??? I can’t imagine that anywhere else, even in Franco’s Spain.
Am looking forward to the Nader documentary, even with Alterman on board. His sounds like the part Todd Gitlin had in the film “The Weather Underground” - a snotty political failure still pushing a grudge (in Gitlin’s case, after 35 years).
When this attack on Iran goes off, it will make recent blunders look like a medal ceremony at the Olympic games. Place my bet on Chinese missile technology waking up the Navy, with an outside chance of a wrecked aircraft carrier.

Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 02/18 at 10:10 AMPrison Museum? Sure. You might have seen the photos of “Old Sparky” in fancy museums, but now you can see the real deal. Alex Cockburn’s account of his visit is near the end of this column.
Posted by sk on from 02/18 at 10:16 AMHey Zen, I wanted to make sure you got my email the other day.
Hello everyone else...for once I am glad we have presidents. I need another day off. Catch you all later.
Posted by JOS on from Oak Park 02/18 at 12:29 PMHope you’re having a safe trip and all the best wishes for your mom, Mickey!
I hope that Nader movie reaches as wide an audience as possible. Offhand, one wild fact it presented was how in Florida there was dozen or so third parties who all got enough votes to have turned the tide against Gore… yet the Daily Kos crowd still held the torch to Ralph when the lynching began in the press and wherever.
Reason #5 million why there’s not chance of not turning this mess around, right?
Posted by James on from Hell's Kitchen 02/18 at 01:24 PMThe (unofficial) job of a Second-Row in a rugby scrum is to grab the scr*tum of the opponents Hooker. Someone should write a kids book…

Also, Chalmers Johnson was on C-span today. I think it will be rebroadcast tonight.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 02/18 at 06:48 PMRMJ, DV also has a great article about you. I’m so glad it worked out for you. I already knew about the charges being dropped but I just wanted to extend my congratulations to you again.
Posted by David on from Louisville KY 02/18 at 09:26 PMHey Jeremy
In Taipei, eh? I’ve been in Shanghai for 5 years now. You’d ‘love’ the Taiwan coverage on the news here. Despite the internet and openess of the Special Economic Zones and the access to 20 000 Taiwanese ex-pats here in Shanghai - I still meet people here who tell me that the people of Taiwan are held prisoner and are longing to break free and be ruled from Beijing.
Luckily I have local friends from Skateboarding, the underground punk music scene and kung fu that are totally uninterested in CCTV (China Central TV).
Thanks to culture and sanity for small mercies. But no thanks to the British mainstream media for being just the same but in more underhand sly ways :(
Andy.
Xin Nian Kuai Le.Posted by Andy on from Shanghai 02/19 at 04:08 AMOh, Just realised that I took for granted the fact I’m British in that last post. So, hey everyone, by the way I’m from Liverpool Uk and happen to live in Shanghai at the moment.
Andy.
