Malcolm X: 42 years later...

Posted by Mickey Z on 02/21 at 08:55 AM
  1. Did you know that a number of years ago the people of Portland woke up to find that activists had changed all the signs to read “Malcolm X Blvd” on one of the main streets through town? The job was so well done that it took a number of hours before anyone noticed.

  2. it’s also the 42nd anniversary of Pio Ghana del Pinto, friend of Mr. X who was working with him on a scheme to coordinate efforts of black Americans and Africans and was machinegunned in his home in Africa.

  3. “Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery.”

    Malcom X

  4. Malcolm, not Malcom...that sounds like some evil computer company.

  5. Thanks for reminding us of this today, Mickey.
    Hi Owen and JOS
soup #1...that was a great idea. That should happen all over the country.

“I believe that there will ultimately be a clash between the oppressed and those that do the oppressing. I believe that there will be a clash between those who want freedom, justice and equality for everyone and those who want to continue the systems of exploitation.”
    Malcolm X.

  6. JOS, #3 has to be the quote of the century (20th or any other). I’ve never heard it, nor read it in many books and articles on Malcolm. Do you know when he said/wrote that? I’ve half a mind to dust off my screenprinting stuff and make a few t-shirts with it. A splattery crimson on white would be appropriate.

Incidentally, I saw “Cry Freedom” again yesterday, about Steven Biko. In a courtroom scene, the once-great Denzel voices the distinction between confrontation and violence. I don’t know enough about Biko to know it was authentic, but it’s a fair assumption. http://tinyurl.com/27wnqe

Captcha sez ‘order.’ Gore Vidal once said “Sure, they’re in favor of law and order - ignore one and impose the other.”

It was 50F and sunny here in Eastern MA, where last week Boston City Concilmember Chuck Turner inflamed obedient minds by successful passage of an anti-war resolution by an 8-3 vote. http://tinyurl.com/23vjls As a result, there have been some murmurs of a Senate run for Mr. Turner. Except for that part about it being a millionaires club, I think he’d clean John Kerry’s clock.

  7. Hello Expendables. We’re back in NYC after a bittersweet family visit to Texas. So great to see my parents. Very tough to know my mom is not getting better. Spending a day of appointments in massive cancer center is quite an experience and speaks volumes about what passes for “life” in this joke of a country.

  9. Thanks for reminding us of this important date, Mickey - and welcome back to the ‘Big Apple’!

And warm (in one ways than one) greetings to soup, Owen, JOS, Rosemarie and Zen Prole.

That’s it for now, my expendables.  Take care, all of you.

  10. Zen Prole #6: LOVE the Gore Vidal quote.
And good to hear about the anti-war resolution.

  11. And so sorry to hear about your Mum, Mickey.

    I can well imagine what
‘spending a day of appointments in massive cancer center’ is like.

Captcha says ‘best’, so it is:
all best in spite of everything,
    Helga
