Nothing Left? (a caption contest of sorts)
My caption: “Will someone get this mannequin off my lap?”
I keep thinking that if we go far enough left, we’ll end up on the right. Does that mean the righties are the real leftists? I mean in the traditional sense of political right/left, wouldn’t anarchists be way more right than the current republicans?
Oh, from yesterday, congrats on the lunababy! For some reason I’m reminded of “The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress”, and I want to call you lunies. I laughed about the cat-anarchy theory. Works for me! Consdering the millions of cats and dogs killed every year for being homeless, I can only wish it would work in reality.
I got a book from ak press yesterday called “The Price of Fire”, about Bolivia’s “resource wars and social movements”. Looks really interesting, and very applicable to where I see this country going, in terms of basic necessities of life (air, water, shelter, food) becoming more and more a privilege of the rich. Interestingly, when I read the preface last night, it talked about headlines, and the author’s frustration on how the world outside of south america ignored everything that was going on in bolivia. I guess sometimes the headlines can be as big as a country and still be overshadowed by the question of paris hilton’s lingerie. (speaking of which, i’m so out of touch. i have no idea what everyone’s talking about!)
Good to hear your mom in law came through the surgury okay, mickey, and best wishes for your mom. Her smile is a beautiful thing.
Morning all. Chilly again in No. Va.

Posted by JOS on from Chicago 03/06 at 10:13 AMCaption paragraph (inspired by Andy’s blog post yesterday):
“In this file photo from John F. Kerry’s yawnfest of a presidential bid in 2004, wax stand-ins of the candidate and supportive rocker Bruce Springsteen are showered with undeserved conffetti. A wax stand-in of you watched this event on television, while wax stand-ins of children around the world suffered preventable disease, starvation, military violence and literal slavery. In other parts of the world, wax stand-ins of numerous plant and animal species were said to be going extinct at an alarming rate and billions of wax people were politically disenfranchised due to the corporate takeover of wax communications.
No word on the situation in the real world.”
Posted by Keir on from the hague 03/06 at 10:42 AMBy the way, Luna, not only do I want to say congratulations on the birth of your child, but that I remember when you announced that the baby was on its way. I haven’t forgotten what I wrote then, ‘cause I meant it. I will not stop trying to make this planet a decent home for your baby.
And this: I was just reading the latest ZNet sustainer commentary. Ted Glick had this to say about the Jan. 27th Iraq War protests in Washington DC:
George Bush-the denier-in-chief of global heating for the last six years--in his state of the union speech last week had more to say about [the urgent issue of catastrophic climate
change and clean energy] than the 25 or so speakers who talked for two and a half hours Saturday morning and early afternoon.Says something about the movement, whatever it is.

Posted by louisemichel on from Maryland 03/06 at 11:19 AMHello Expendables and welcome, louisemichel. I have three words for you today: Wind Chill Factor. It’s freezing in NYC.
We’re off to a good start with the captions, I’d say. A slow start...but quality nonetheless. Anyone else?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 03/06 at 12:54 PMCaption:
“Star Power: Kerry shows he’s ‘born to run’ but in the battle of the numb-skulls is surely no match for ‘burning’ Bush who utilised his own ‘yonder’ star and his gifts of gold.”
I know ... nobody likes a smart ass. Ha.
And seriously: The two party scam is soul destroying and the ‘anyone but Bush’ strategy is a testament to it’s power.
Posted by Andy on from Shanghai 03/06 at 01:13 PMMaybe the position of Chomsky and Zinn on the 2004 election had to do with the position that elections are of secondary importance compared with mass action (or its absence).
Posted by louisemichel on from Maryland 03/06 at 02:00 PMOf course, Chomsky and Zinn never endorsed Kerry but what I’m saying is that a broad spectrum of “leftists” mobilized to dethrone Dubya...and they failed. My guess is that few of them will act differently in 2008.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 03/06 at 05:49 PMI’m surprised no one’s said it yet (slow day, huh?) . . . but Mickey we Expendables are not on the “Left” and no one thinks we are. They think we’re on the “Looney Left”. I’ll never forget the day when truthout’s William Rivers Pitt gave a talk at the American Book Center in The Hague, early ‘04 I think. At the time he was endorsing former General Wesley Clark and during the Q and A I asked what Pitt thought about Clark’s war crimes. His complete response? “Don’t be duped by the Looney Left.”
A few months later Pitt was campaign manager for Dennis Kucinich.
As for Leftists---looney or otherwise---mobilizing to dethrone the Boy King, this is what I had to say on the matter a few months ago. Most around here have seen it, but I think it’s worth repeating.
Posted by Keir on from the hague 03/06 at 06:20 PMOh, The Irony Dept: I’m so glad that Z Magazine once ran articles about Springsteen and Rage Against The Machine in the same issue. Springsteen got a deluxe, clueless fellating by a fawning Baby Boomer while Rage, at the ‘Evil Empire’ height of their career, were given 1/3 the space and chided as upstarts. And they printed it.
I wrote to tell the author that Springsteen crossed a picket line in Tacoma,WA, on his Human Touch tour, but never heard back. Boomers are touchy about their political security blankets…
My caption reads: Michael Albert fell for it, so John Kerry’s a cinch.
Toothless Movement Note: whose idea was it to schedule ANOTHER march in DC on a weekend? Does UFPJ have access to the Congressional calendar?
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 03/06 at 06:35 PMI don’t wanna have to pick a winner. Anyone have a choice?
Late entry: “My machine, she’s a dud all stuck in the mud somewhere in the swamps of Jersey.”
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 03/06 at 09:08 PM$h!t, Keir. As soon as I saw the photo, I wrote:
Rock legend Springstein poses for a photo with a wax Kerry during a brief visit to Madame Tussauds.
Then I read the comments and noticed you’d beat me to the punch with the concept of borrowing inspiration from Andy’s blog. Well, great minds think alike.
People call me a “liberal”. I’ve no idea what that means or whether it’s true or not.
Posted by Jeremy on from Taipei, Taiwan 03/06 at 10:35 PMThis seems either too obvious, or maybe it just doesn’t work, not sure til I see it in print, but…
“John, my man, apparently some of us were NOT Born to Run after all...”
At least not for president, etc.
captcha really does say “enough”
