The Coriolis Effect
Why is it that those of us who refuse to keep our eyes closed are the ones who are seen as “misguided” or “extremists” by the mainstream? Why isn’t it the majority questioning the obvious discrepancies and demanding answers?
David Rovics sang at the infoshop this weekend, and one of his songs was Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL), some of the lyrics:
“We’ve got a situation and it calls for a solution
That upholds our domination of the planet
We’re gonna make our case and we’re gonna make it well
But if you don’t like our logic you can can it
We’ll use impeccable intelligence from any country in the world
As long as we all see eye to eye
And if we don’t find quite what we need we know what to do
Just look into the camera and lie”It is like when you read the Onion, and you know it is supposed to be satire, but it is closer to reality than cnn or nytimes or whatever media outlet.
Your screenplay was very compelling. Is that just the first installment? Do we get the rest at some point?
Morning all. I hope you’re making progress in the frozen north, RMJ. It was downright balmy(ish) this morning here in nova.
Posted by Deb on from NoVa 03/20 at 07:18 AMHappy Meatout Day everyone! As part of my own individual activism, I’m having a date over here for dinner tonight! And man, remember in the The Princess Bride where Andre the Giant explained that it’s easier for him to fight twenty people than to fight just one man one on one? That’s kinda how I feel right now. But with cooking, and maybe other stuff, instead of fighting. Or maybe some fighting, who the heck knows? I’m making this:

as for david rovics lyrics… i always liked this one…
Oppositional Defiance Disorder - David Rovics
Alex is a member of my record label
Teenager though he is
He joined the Ever Reviled Records collective
And the indy music biz
Well his parents didn’t like such turns of events
So they sent off a couple of thugs
To bring him back to Utah, lock him up
And pump him full of drugs
They say he’s got problems with authority
Yes this is what they claim
And their psychiatric analysis
Has even got a name(Chorus)
Oppositional Defiance Disorder
I think I got it, too
Oppositional Defiance Disorder
He’s sick and so are youIf you think George Bush is a moron
And Tony Blair’s a liar
If you fantasize about setting
Your local Wal-Mart on fire
If you don’t like Tom Brokaw
And you think he’s full of it
And you feel that a Rush Limbaugh punching bag
Might be kinda fun to hit
If bombing other countries
Makes you feel appalled
You have got a problem
And this is what it’s called(Chorus)
If you think school is boring
And your teacher is a fool
If you don’t like your congressman
And you called him a corporate tool
If you were not standing
To sing save the Queen
If you turned down hamburgers
And ate rice and beans
We’ve got a diagnosis
No matter whether you agree
Just do what the doctors tell you
And thank God for psychiatry(chorus)
Posted by michael on from scotland 03/20 at 08:17 AMHe sang that one on Saturday too, michael. I liked it. I liked them all.
James, that recipe looks like a lot of work! But then I’m intimidated for some reason by anything that requires me to make a form of it. lol. Good luck on your date! Culinary activism is fun. You should make some cupcakes too! Mooshoes carries Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, if you don’t have it already. I recommend the margarita cupcakes. ;)
Posted by Deb on from NoVa 03/20 at 08:32 AMI already have Vegan with a Vengeance and there’s plenty of desserts in that… but I worked so much on dinner that I just about a container of Rice Dream for dessert. That’ll have to do… main course is a whole tempeh tomato sort of Italian thing of my own improvising… changing the world, one date at a time.
Damn it have to do some work now so can’t read the story yet…
Posted by James on from work 03/20 at 08:47 AMThat is a great piece of work, Mick. It had my head spinning...I think I am going to read it a few times to get the full impact, but I was blown away on the first read. Great that you sent it to Cerebral Catalyst…
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 03/20 at 09:35 AMThanks a lot, man-- now I’m going to be checking out my date’s legs during dinner to see if her calves will split open and medical instruments with pig’s heads will spill out… but it’s a cool story and I hope it gets a lot of exposure!
Posted by James on from work 03/20 at 12:16 PMHello Expendables. Tomorrow’s the first day of spring and it’s starting to get a little warmer here.
Thanks for the kind words, re: my screenplay. I love doing this kind of writing. Now I just need to get one of my novels published.
Btw, if you scout around on that site, you’ll find some of JOS’ writing.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 03/20 at 12:55 PMHow great would it be to publish a novel? I mean, I have now published about 20 poems at around 8 different small press poetry magazines and e-zines without earning one penny and it feels great. A novel, now that would be...orgasmic.
Check this criminal timeline of how “our” media helped lead us into the Iraq war:
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 03/20 at 03:18 PMif the plasticity of the characters flesh is the manifestation of the perversities that lurk beneath the surface in some nebulous psychic underworld, it begs the question in whose consciousness is the plane real? After reading through it and visualizing it animated in sepia tones of black white red and multiple shades of gray, a line from a pink floyd song floated to the surface...."hello...........is there anybody in there?”
Its perfect as is and allows the reader/viewer to fully engage their own imagination in the continuation of the story, if they want to.
Crosby Stills Nash and Young was on the radio this morning singing “.....and we’ve go to get ourselves back to the garden...” That got me thinking about how in the heck did lsd and panama red ever get morphed into crack cocaine and crystal meth? Here’s a link to Brenda Ann Keneallys’ award winning cyber photo-journalism project called “Power Money and Respect-pictures from my neighborhood”. It is disturbing.
one more thing....cyber-blogging is weird.
Posted by frances on from british columbia 03/20 at 05:53 PMoops forgot the link.
