Beyond the pet food recall: What's your cat eating?
I can’t even finish reading the comments. Why do they think it would be absurd for animal shelters to sell the bodies of the animals they kill by the millions? We’re talking 10 million homeless “companions” killed every year. Every year. Are these compassionate liberals keeping track of that? Of course they’re not, so why do they think anyone else is?
What about the many many shelters who sell the live animals to the class b dealers for some HLS variety torture? What about the many breeders to breed animals specifically for medical torture? What about the many animals stolen out of people’s own yards for medical torture? (yes, class b dealers have been found to do this)
As far as I can tell, selling the dead bodies to be rendered into pet food is by far from the worst thing that actually does happen. And the smirking chimps don’t even believe that, the least of the horrifying things.
Mickey, I think you hit a button for me. As did the smirking chimps.
hbo documentary: http://tinyurl.com/e9kmv
("dealing dogs") I have it and haven’t been able to watch it yet. It will be as disturbing as Earthlings was.(the good news is that many shelters do refuse to sell to class b dealers now. the bad news is that there are many puppy mills who have no such ethical dilemma, since they have no ethics.)
Morning all. Sorry about the frothing at the mouth there. I’ll be back to “normal” in a few more minutes…
Posted by Deb on from NoVa 03/22 at 06:20 AMShopping for food has become such an ordeal for me. On an energetic level it All looks dispirited. Oppressive and uncared for. The Spanish invasion of the Americas was successful in part because Amaranth, which was held to be sacred, was destroyed, purposefully. It completely dispirited the peoples. Ditto the Buffalo and now I hear from Riverbend that the destruction of Palm fields are being used as leverage to get information. Veitnam. Waterways everwhere. Its agression against LIFE and its deeply imbedded. Just try and get your neighbours to leave the dandelions alone!
You touched on a sore spot with me as well this morning Mickey.
Today is World Water Day.

Please take a moment to let P.M. Harper know you care about our water.
ps. animals belong in the wild though there is not much of that left.Posted by frances on from british columbia 03/22 at 09:22 AMMorning Deb and Frances…
Yeah, reading those comments...wow. One guy/gal says do you really think a capitialist would do this or that and risk being exposed!!!
Capitalism is based on nasty people getting away with nasty things for profit, #### safety, morality and honor. I wish people would wake up, but most never will.
Posted by JOS on from Chicago 03/22 at 09:43 AMAfterthought.
In a world where over 50% of people go hungry everyday it is absolutly criminal to use fertile fields to grow pumpkins to carve up on Halloween.
And now there is talk of growing corn to fuel machines....Its insane.Posted by frances on from british columbia 03/22 at 09:51 AMfrances, people in the world are growing hungry because of politics, not because of a lack of food. There is food rotting all the time in storage silos. During that awful famine in Etheopia in the 80’s, they were exporting food to Europe…
That being said, I do see your point. The system as it stands is increasingly wasteful, and we’re not doing the earth or the world any favors.
JOS, the comment you just quoted was around where I stopped and flew off the handle…
heh. captcha has a sense of humor - says “value”
Posted by Deb on from NoVa 03/22 at 09:57 AMhi Deb, JOS,

Posted by michael on from scotland 03/22 at 10:07 AMfrances...thanks for reminding us of Soylent Green.
JOS #3...morality and honor, antonyms for Capitalism.
Deb...I like your enthusiasm.
michael...I will check out that link now.Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 03/22 at 10:39 AMI’m surprised no one here has gone into the pet food and products industry yet, in terms of how much Americans spend each year.
When concerned Americans finally get some laws through Congress protecting our captive animals from substandard foods, I can imagine the whole starving war-torn world sending a big greeting card that says “Thanks, America!”
Frances, Hannah Arendt says: The Third World is not a reality but an ideology.
I remember learning something I thought was shocking the first time I visited friends with a pet in Poland. They fed the dog the same stuff they ate! I had been brought up to think that isn’t healthy (hmm, I wonder if pet-food producers were responsible) but the dog was pretty okay with it. Still is, years and years later. (Of course, my friends aren’t on a standard American diet...)
Posted by Keir on from the hague 03/22 at 11:39 AMGreetings, Expendables. Fine comments all around today.
I’ve been caught unawares with this pet food recall. This is the second recall in the last few weeks - the last had to do with store brand dry food that Wal-Mart produced and carried. So now I’ve got to check my cats’ food, and they are in the care of a friend ‘cause I’m in between places to live.
Michael, I see that “The Future of Food” is available through Netflix. Thanks for the heads up. “Children of Men” is on DVD next week: I highly recommend it.
Off Topic: Last night The Daily Show had the funniest line I’ve ever heard on TV. Bush’s claim of a “reasonable offer” in reply to the threat of congressional subpoenas (in private and not under oath) confused Jon Stewart. For more, they went to John Oliver in front of a D.C. green screen: “Jon, the offer is reasonable since their first was ‘Go #### yourself.’”
Sure, the idea that the US attorney purge is a constitutional crisis is laughable (though welcome all the same), but Stewart and Colbert hit grand slams yesterday: when checking in with the latter at the end of TDS, Colbert punned like he was testifying before Congress, complete with the Fifth and asides to counsel.
It also occurred to me what Stephen Colbert has achieved in 18 months on air: he’s heavily damaged what took Fox News over ten years to build. Word to the left: playing nice with fascists is a damn fool strategy. I’ve been re-reading Shirer’s “Rise and Fall” and it didn’t work then, either.
We now return to our regularly-scheduled American public health crisis. Captcha sez ‘head.’ H. Sapiens has to pull it out of the sand.
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 03/22 at 01:09 PMHello Expendables...from a sunny, spring-like Astoria. Busy day for me so I’m just now catching up with the excellent comments above. Glad to see the cat food piece provoked such passion.
Welcome back, Zen...did the move go well?
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 03/22 at 01:57 PMBtw, I just found out I’m a pilgarlic.
Posted by Mickey Z. on from Astoria 03/22 at 02:03 PMSix men, ranging in age from 27 to 87, were arrested up here. They sort of occupied our Congressman’s office. I thought that that would happen. The Democrats have moved to the right of the Republicans. I am very happy that I support Nader.
Mickey #12...You made it necessary for me to use my unabridged dictionary....reminds me of what Mudge used to do with words.
Posted by RMJ on from Churchill 4 Prez Hdqts 03/22 at 03:32 PMand another thing that pisses me off about the pet food industry is the advertising campaign. Its like if your pet eats this stuff they will transform into a finalist for the olympics or something. Meanwhile, our children get bombarded with ads for freakin’ lucky charms! tricks for kids.
wtf is up with that?
now thats off my chest, I can get back to grooving with ‘Charlie and the Night Cats’.
Thanks again for providing a space to share my thoughts.
Posted by frances on from british columbia 03/22 at 06:02 PMi wonder if this would work and i hope no one takes offence - i just think its funny…
Posted by michael on from scotland 03/22 at 07:07 PMMZ, the move isn’t over yet. Phase One was exiting one place, which is a great relief. So far, so good. Phase Two in the next 30 days…
Yes, the cat food discussion struck a nerve. I reflected on this today: we don’t have universal health care and do have military bases encircling the globe, both without creating widespread revolt. But mess with Fluffy and out come the long knives. If our pets were deployed to the war zone for oil and profit, would they still be there? “Four legs good, two legs bad,” wrote Orwell. Thppppt!
Posted by Zen Prole on from Urth 03/22 at 09:30 PMThis is a serious question: what would domesticated house cats eat sans brown pellets? I know dogs will eat anything. But I don’t know as much about cats.
Posted by Kap Fulton on from San Diego, CA 03/23 at 12:26 AMMice.
Posted by Keir on from the hague 03/23 at 03:45 AMMy cat doesn’t eat mice, she just plays with them. She is very gentle, just sort of hugs them with her front legs, then lets them go, then chases them for another hug. Eventually, she gets bored, and brings them inside and lets them go so she can watch me chase them for relocation outside.
Posted by Thomas McCullock on from Colorado Springs 03/23 at 01:48 PMHey Mickey, when you attack Pat Tillman make sure you attack every dumb #### who died in Vietnam too, because almost all of them were young and idealistic also. Yep, they died for lies, Corporate profits, imperialism… just like Pat Tillman. So rip into ‘em, Mickey, because young men dying for lies is as old as time. Or are the Vietnam vets somehow more sacred. Curious, because why not attack those that comeback without arms or legs, or anyone who fights in these hideous wars? Attack Cindy Sheehan’s son. Is he any different or better than Tillman, or is it just because Tillman was a football star that he gets your sick vitriol? Go deliver the message to his parents or brother who are in great pain and very much anti-war. Give it to them right on their doorstep. Because you are such a man. A real martial artist man who truly lives for one thing: to promote Mickey Z. Well Tillman’s got you beat there. He hated the spotlight. How low will you go to make sure it finds you, Mickey?
