  3. Heres my 2 cents worth.....Dumpster Politics

Our second story apartment has a great view of the ocean and Quadra island, its reasonably priced, and comes with free heat.  All of this balances out the gruelling climb up three flights of stairs and the view of the parking lots below.  We also get a great view of the dumpster and all the nifty still usable junk that people pile up there.

The dumpster for our building is also on the trap line of a friendly elderly iguy.  About once a week he shows up and picks through our unwanted and used up stuff in search of bottles.  Sometimes he even climbs right in there and comes out fifty or sixty cents richer.  Its a little troubling...we dont like to think of him being reduced to bottle picking to supplement his income and yet we are relieved to see him when he shows up.  Still healthy and still smiling.  So naturally when he didnt show up for a couple of months we got worried.
My balconey neighbors had been saving up bottles to give him and the bag was getting really big.  Eventually he shows up and the neighbours are home and Dave runs out with this big bag of plastic pop bottles and hands it to the guy.  Now theres only four maybe five bucks in the bag, but its a few more coins in his pocket, and it beats fifty cents for sure.  But its a big bag and the depot is a good six or seven blocks away.  I’m thinking he’s going to be dragging that bag before long.  When out comes our downstairs neighbour.  She stops and talks with him for a minute, picks up the bag and puts it in her van.  I’m thinking, “thats nice.  Shes giving him a ride.” She slams the door of her van closed and yells across the parking lot, “ Thanks!”

Its the thought that counts, right?

  5. Hellos to michael, frances, Mickey, and Jeremy.
I just posted another comment on the Goff site.

We now have one more reason for not eating meat. Did you notice the loud applause that Bush received during his talk in front of the Cattlemen’s Association today. Maybe those guys like not only animal blood but also human blood. They sure were enthusiastic in their pro-war stance.

  6. Hello Expendables. It’s another beautiful spring day in Astoria. I’d love to share a dumpster-related tale with Frances...but I only have time for this quick comment. I’ll be back soon.

For now, I’d like to once again say thanks to all those who posted comments elsewhere, re: my Tillman article.

  7. Btw, forgot to mention my line of the day for yesterday. A comment on Goff’s blog began: Mickey Z makes a living writing these kinds of articles.

    If only…

  9. Good stuff, Michael...thanks.

Btw, here’s an “explanation” from Stan Goff, as posted on his blog:
Rushing here, but if I was intemperate in my remarks, it was because I was with Pat’s mom, and I saw the look on her face when she read Mickey’s article. I can be just as territorial about my friends as the next person. Dannie Tillman is my friend.

  10. ‘The woman - large, in her 50s, lost in her thoughts’ - do I have a ‘doppelgaenger/double in Astoria, Mickey?  That could have been me, you know.  I still hold hopes to actually visit Astoria one day.  Thanks for another great post.

‘Hi’ to Michael, Jeremy R. Hammond, frances and Rosemarie from a rather cool and wet Daylesford.  And here’s hoping you can actually make a living writing articles one day soon, Mickey ..
